The "How to do Oldhammer" Thread

Those goblins look nice, Zoggin!

I have made no headway on my hobgoblins... Seems to me, the most important ingredient in "How to do Oldhammer" is to take it slow and steady. =)

As far as I know its still on, at least I hope it s because I have finally finished my halflings and just need to photograph them.

So I volunteered for this challenge way back when Mr. Whiskey Priest posted about it on his blog, but I'm only just getting around to it. Anyhow, here's my contribution of variously assorted EM-4 minis:

Here's the cavalry (which I already finished a while ago so I could use them in a campaign) to round it out to 20 figs, the really wonderful EM-4 mounted barbarians range. These have quickly become some of my favorite figures ever:

You can read the whole post on my blog here: http://mdarrow.blogspot.com/2015/02/how-to-do-oldhammer.html

If you want to see more comprehensive pictures of the cavalry (whom I have daubed the Dire Men), as well as some of my turgid little fluff poems for them, you can scroll through this tag list here: http://mdarrow.blogspot.com/search/label/Dire Men

Since I picked this warband based mainly on what I thought looked cool, I still haven't quite come up with a unifying theme yet. But when I do, I'll be sure to post the corresponding fluff.

Let me know what you think!

Great work mate, and thanks for pointing out how nice those riders are. I'd barely given them a second look before. Good to see some love for in-production figures, too :)

Nice unit cards on your blog, too.

I think it's fucking fantastic, that's what I think! =)

Everything - from the painting, to the miniatures, to the poetry (albeit turgid). Lovely! You have even managed to get me keen on Song of Blades again. Good job!

Thanks for the kind words guys! Really glad you like 'em.

@phreedh: Song of Blades is a wonderful game, but I'd be doing you a disservice if I didn't mention that the skirmish game I'm currently hooked on is Open Combat (http://www.secondthunder.com/. You can read about it on Gav Thorpe's blog here: https://mechanicalhamster.wordpress.com ... en-combat/)

Mechanically, it's not much more complicated than SoBH, but it has the genius touch of using the Block Dice mechanic from Blood Bowl to do combat, instead of doing an opposed roll + combat score, making it a terrifically balanced game with a good deal of crunch. It's a little pricey for what you get, since there's no campaign system, no true magic system, and only three scenarios (so far--expansions are promised) but it's easy to teach and a lot of fun. I highly recommend it.

Cheers!

Those barbarians look pretty great huh! I want to see the others painted up, particularly that commander, he's got some serious presence!

For those that may be interested Em4's fantasy minis are actually from the old (mid 90's?) Grenadier 'Fantasy Warriors' line. Em4 only have a few of the sculpts available, there are a bucket load more (meaning the whole 'Fantasy Warriors' line) available from Mirliton SG, which is unfortunately in Italy, including a few more barbarian cavalry variants. One of these days, when I have a chunk of cash and my Metal Magic desires have been fulfilled, Mirliton'll be getting a tasty sized order to send me in England ;)

@ James Holloway,

I like your freehand shield's, they look evil

Thanks!

I am nearly done -- just 4 models left to do and then some bases to pretty up. I'm hoping to have it wrapped up by the end of the month.

Hmm. The same figures are sold by all three companies. One cavalry figure Forlorn Hope £3, EM4 £3, Miniature Heroes £6. Just saying.

How odd! I was mainly looking at the ratmen, for Mordheim, and they seem to be decently priced. FH @ £1.50-£1.80 each, MH @ £9 for 5.

Great, more shop catalogues to scroll through
Do any of the UK guys stock as many variants as Mirliton?

PS. Should we perhaps be making a new thread to save hijacking this 'ere "How to Oldhammer"... or is it relevant enough to building an Oldhammer army with in-production models?
