The "How to do Oldhammer" Thread

I don't suppose anyone knows where I can find a good Skaven-sized rat skull bit?

The previous plastic clanrat sprue (the one where the head, body, legs and tail were all separate bits) came with a Skaven-sized rat skull. You can just barely make it out in this photo.

Hmmm. OK, OK, that shouldn't be impossible to find. Thanks!

Last model done. Project was definitely lowed by the shift to high rate production of wood elves for BOYL.
And a shot of the completed warband.

Have I missed something or are you the only one to have actually finished this challenge?

Very good job anyway and I have to say those plastic skaven work wonderfully well with the old ones from Jez (let's just forget about the mildhammer bulky ones shall we?)

Check page 1 - I even used the requisite Battlemasters halberdiers ;)

You're off category! You're so ahead of us all ! You finished the challenge before it even started, you legend !

Just above I see someone who managed to make a cheap unit with new GW references. That has to count for something

I definitely have some of these kicking about somewhere (I have those Skaven, never used the skulls and never throw anything away), but my life is pretty much on hold right now until I get my house move out of the way. If you still need some once I've had a chance to unpack let me know and I'll see what I can do.

The first three of eight civilians are finished. Hopefully the others will soon follow. They're quite simple and not much to look at, but I enjoyed painting them nevertheless.

I am not dead! I have spent some time on the Christmas break finishing my Beastman squad, including their standard bearer.

Painting those horrible plastic Beastmen was no fun at all, but I'm done now. Here, as a reminder, are the champion and three other units. This just leads the Skaven, although unless I can find a Skaven skull somewhere I'm thinking of saying sod it and making them Marauders instead.

I'm currently painting some Maruader Witch Elves and just finished the skin and face of one of them. What do you guys think?

Re: AW: The "How to do Oldhammer" Thread

I like it. The pupil paint job seems to have covered the lower eye lid though. It might be better to give the eyelid an additional lick of paint to pronounce it a little bit more.

Good skin tone, the magenta in the recesses gives an appropriately unhealthy tinge to the dark elves, I might have to steal it - I'm not happy with the pale blue I came up with.

It looks good. I'd suggest taking it a shade our two lighter as women tend to have paler skin than men and if you didn't, the rest of the dark elf might be too dark.

Thank you for the replies, I will definitely take it into consideration in the final pass. Her face isn't the most feminine of them all and I was kinda surprised it came out the way it did. I took my time on the skin. Applied various thin washes of purple and some red. Nico from France gave me this tip at Oldhammer Day 2013. Seems to make the skin come to life..

She looks really good and though I don't really portray Dark elf girls as east-german hammer throwers, the paintjob makes her really nice. The skin is looking great and rich and the washes do work to give that nice contrast.

Well, what slow progress I have made! Earlier I posted all of three orcs from my 1/72 scale part of this challenge. My other plan was to use 15mm goblins as lesser goblins and you guessed it, I got around to painting just three! I won't spam this thread with pictures, so I'll post the rest in the showroom section.

As mentioned, to me the models fit the outline in that they are cheap and still in production. They come from in my mind a really underrated figure range. Then again, I think all 15mm fantasy models are! I also have some 15mm dwarfs that I'd love to do a 15mm WHFB set with, matching armies and all. Not sure if I'd halve the base sizes and ranges or just stick with the normal sizes and use smaller models. That's another thread for another day, perhaps!

Anyway, if I ever finish either "how to" force, I'll post them here...
