The "How to do Oldhammer" Thread

I had seen battle zone as well but didn't realise they were in Royston. Wonder if they'd let us pick it up which would save on postage!

@Protist - Don't worry about hijacking the thread, we've got to 30 pages so we might as well carry on!

Ihave picked up from them in the past but it wasa some time ago, they used to run a club on I think a Thursday at the slocal scoout hut. Anyway may be worth asking.

I didn't know about Battle Zone! Going to go rifle throught their range now.

I agree. If anything, I think discussion of available ranges is perfectly germaine. You just showed me something about doing oldhammer!

Mirliton has a distributor in the UK I think.

Yep, it's http://miniature-heroes.co.uk/ Keep meaning to order a bunch of stuff from them.

I'm pretty sure Mirliton's UK distributor is Vexillia - http://vexillia.com - or at least that's what I thought back in February last year when I bought a bunch of stuff from them. They seem to have Mirilton's full range available, but like Mirilton themselves they're not cheap.

The other companies listed all seem to have a range of models available, I've generally found that Forlorn Hope have the widest selection but still only a proportion of the full range.

Back to the original point of the thread and my reply - love those barbarian horse. Just added another few items to my "must buy some day" list...

At some point soon I'll get to my hobgoblins that were meant to be my entry into this challenge. Only two figures ahead of them in the queue (plus a big pile of DIY to do around the house :( )

I've ordered recently from Battlezone (some resin movement trays for Newhammer and some of the ex-Grenadier "Evil Knights") and no problems. Not the fastest turnaround in the world but stuff arrived OK.

Thanks! I'm sure you won't regret it. Can't wait to see those hobs!

Done. I have written a blog post about it: http://gonzohistorygaming.blogspot.co.u ... ammer.html

You can find plenty of photos there, but here's the warband group shot:

I never want to look at one of those damned plastic Beastmen again so long as I live. Even five of them was too many.

Those are ace, lovely job on them. It's exactly the kind of thing I imagined when I came up with hair brained scheme. If you don't mind could I share some pics on my blog and sign post folks back to yours?

This is excellent ! Makes my unfinished band itch a little...

really characterful band anyway, great mix of realistic and fantasy. Love it.

The grenadier models are definitely fantasy style so they are good to keep the feeling of a fantasy army. The perry models are realistic and gritty which gives a good low fantasy vibe to the force I think. I have some more of their citadel metals in my collection as you can see below. This is the next couple of additions to the Old Worlder Mercs. Viola! :)

The cannon is a Prince August mortar that I converted. I like its very primitive feel, it looks like it would blow a big hole in a wall/greater daemon/halfling as required. The perry crew are splendidly well sculpted.

Nicely done. I really like the cavalry shields.

Thanks Jeff. Done using Tamiya masking tape https://www.tamiyausa.com/articles/feature.php?article-id=222#.VVS36_lVhuA.

Very interesting! Someone suggested I use this for getting a good spiral on lances as well. Did you use the 6mm? I assume you paint a base color over the whole shield...apply the stripes of tape...then paint the rest a second color and remove tape to reveal the stripes?

It seems to give a nice clean line...very clever.

Hey Blue,

Yes I have the 6mm one, although I cut it into 3mm width before applying it to the shield. I did the lance spirals freehand although I imagine that you would get good results from a thin strip of the masking tape - I think that an experienced painter like you would get an approximately accurate result quicker by just freehanding the lance. The problem with using masking tape around a pole is that the tape will tend to lift at one of the edges.

The process for the shields is exactly as you say. Paint the base colour trying to get as smooth a layer as possible, ideally spay or airbrush but in this example I am using acrylic medium to ensure a smooth finish.

Once it is definitely dry you can apply the masking tape although you might feel safer applying a layer of matt varnish first to protect that nice finish before any more messing with it.

With the tape, try to keep it as clean as possible before applying it as you want it to make as good a contact with the model as possible - some of the paint will leek under the tape no matter what, so best to minimise.

Now that the tape is in place with maximum contact we apply the next colour. You might find that spraying gives the best effect but the key thing in application of the next colour is not to load the model with paint which may soak under the mask. In general I would use several VERY light sprayings leaving a couple of minutes between each. Beware of the spray vomiting a load of paint onto your lovingly prepared model! For these models I painted on the stripes by hand as I can control the volume of paint easily this way. The idea is to use the masking as a guide rather than relying on it to 100% stop paint from bleeding under the tape.

Once the covering layer of paint is fully dry, gently lift off the mask. At this stage I would touch up any leaked colour errors by hand.
