As my ... whatever the term is for 4 times a year.. quarterly? Heroquest group is coming to the end of the first book, they are going to be up against the Witch lord in his first appearance. Next to Morcar & Mentor who.. well, we can debate if they really appear or not (Anyone want to go into the debate on that? it's ... pretty interesting if you aren't aware), the Witch lord is probebly the biggest character in all of Heroquest!. Alot of Heroquest doesn't really have Characters. the Heroes are blanks for whatever character the player wants to give them, most of the enemies are equally blank but cannon fodder, then there is the odd ones like Sir Ragnar who gets.. 1 appearance and a couple of mentions, Prince Magnus, a Local .. prince who was mention a fair bit (where despite him not appearing, you can rob him ^_^), then the odd one-offs like Ulag the Orc Warlord, and his son Grak.. and I could go on with them.. then there is some bigger ones like the 4 Wizards of Morcar who.. well.. don't know.. one thing that alway bugged me is for the last official expansion, you get 4 powerful wizards with there own spell decks, yay.. but only 5 missions.. one for each warlord and one where each one is there in a weaker form.. that's.. kinda disappointing.. interesting to know if more was planned for that (also, I get the feeling some 'later' ideas where then used for Warhammer Quest, which while the follow up (of sorts) for AHQ, most likely had some leftover HQ stuff..

Anyway.. the Witch lord, however, gets a 3 mission story arc in the original book, where he appears twice and right away at the end, you find out he isn't dead and there is a whole expansion based on him, Return of the Witch Lord (which has an intro that is a little weird.. I mean, at the end of the original campaign, Mentor tells you the Witch Lord isn't really dead.. then at the start of Return of the Witch Lord, Mentor is upset to tell you that the Witch Lord isn't dead!... which you already know ¬_¬ no wonder he only knows what's in Loretome.. guy can't remember a thing), in which he kinda appears in two missions.

Anyway.. I got a bit confused and thought I couldn't find my Witch Lord painted figure from my college era painting.. So I decided to paint up a spare using Mike McVey's design from the protype.

The Loin area of the robe isn't as detailed cause.. either the final plastic has it smaller OR it's just WAY too small details.. either way, I didn't think I could get away with the fire AND the Striping either side. Used one of my old Photo background models for it cause it made sense (need to make up a couple to allow it being longer).

Of course, I found the other one.. Might show it sometime.. no clue.. anyway, a couple of bits I'm not sure I'm happy with but trying to copy a talented painter, I think it helped work on improving my painting skills..

Oh.. and I have no clue how he did the helmet.. there appears to be ALOT of fading which.. I just couldn't figure out.. so.. it's not quite as good but fair enough.

On an unrelated side note as I was talking about unreleased HQ stuff.. Original book ends telling you about Kellar's Keep and the Return of the Witch Lord.. which then came out.. fine.. Return of the Witch lord says how Skulmar, one of his servants, has escaped and you will have to fight him!.. Kellar's Keep kinda leads into the Heroquest Advanced 13 mission campaign (Dark Company) which has.. not much of an ending story, Ogre Horde has no ending story, nor does Wizards.. Skulmar ran off with the Powerful spell book of the Witch lord, was aided by Sir Ragnar who had turned traitor before being killed.. Big Build up.. where is the Skulmar campaign?!?

Nice paint job on perhaps the best looking mini in the game. Though one thing that has always bothered me a bit is how Morcar has a skull for face yet is buff as hell. Is he meant to be partially undead or what? Just been hit with that good ol' chaos magic that stripped skin and flesh from his face? Or is it a mask? Simply design choice to rip-off Skeletor? So many questions...

I mean, at the end of the original campaign, Mentor tells you the Witch Lord isn't really dead.. then at the start of Return of the Witch Lord, Mentor is upset to tell you that the Witch Lord isn't dead!... which you already know ¬_¬ no wonder he only knows what's in Loretome.. guy can't remember a thing)
Poor Mentor is getting old... and none of the heroes have the heart to just say: "Yeah, yeah old man, we already know. You told us!"

That wasn't Morcar ^_^ Morcar never appeared in the game as he was weakened in the battle with Mentor and retreated to the Northern chaos Wastes

without going on with the flimation cartoon (not a huge fan), Skeletor was very much stripped skin style as the edges of the face on his head, you saw the flesh, and later on when you saw him without the hood, you very much saw only his face was that style. Depending on your preference, he was even a demon from another dimension (early Masters of the Universe) or he was changed by the pit of chaos (original idea from creator Mark Taylor). Then later on you had all that stupid King's brother rubbish thrown in to make it more generic and dull.

What?! Are you telling me my whole life has been a lie? Been long since I played HeroQuest (and only expansion I got to play was Return of the witch lord). But yeah, now I think I remember; the old bloke on DM's screen is Morcar, no? So who exactly this Skeletor-wannabe is then?

the debate on what does Morcar look like is... complex but it's just 'Chaos Sorcerer' for the figure. The closest to a character for him would be the Witch Lord himself, as when you see him on Return of the Witch Lord, he has a helmet, a skull face, flesh arms (though a bit thinner)
