As my ... whatever the term is for 4 times a year.. quarterly? Heroquest group is coming to the end of the first book, they are going to be up against the Witch lord in his first appearance. Next to Morcar & Mentor who.. well, we can debate if they really appear or not (Anyone want to go into the debate on that? it's ... pretty interesting if you aren't aware), the Witch lord is probebly the biggest character in all of Heroquest!. Alot of Heroquest doesn't really have Characters. the Heroes are blanks for whatever character the player wants to give them, most of the enemies are equally blank but cannon fodder, then there is the odd ones like Sir Ragnar who gets.. 1 appearance and a couple of mentions, Prince Magnus, a Local .. prince who was mention a fair bit (where despite him not appearing, you can rob him ^_^), then the odd one-offs like Ulag the Orc Warlord, and his son Grak.. and I could go on with them.. then there is some bigger ones like the 4 Wizards of Morcar who.. well.. don't know.. one thing that alway bugged me is for the last official expansion, you get 4 powerful wizards with there own spell decks, yay.. but only 5 missions.. one for each warlord and one where each one is there in a weaker form.. that's.. kinda disappointing.. interesting to know if more was planned for that (also, I get the feeling some 'later' ideas where then used for Warhammer Quest, which while the follow up (of sorts) for AHQ, most likely had some leftover HQ stuff..

Anyway.. the Witch lord, however, gets a 3 mission story arc in the original book, where he appears twice and right away at the end, you find out he isn't dead and there is a whole expansion based on him, Return of the Witch Lord (which has an intro that is a little weird.. I mean, at the end of the original campaign, Mentor tells you the Witch Lord isn't really dead.. then at the start of Return of the Witch Lord, Mentor is upset to tell you that the Witch Lord isn't dead!... which you already know ¬_¬ no wonder he only knows what's in Loretome.. guy can't remember a thing), in which he kinda appears in two missions.

Anyway.. I got a bit confused and thought I couldn't find my Witch Lord painted figure from my college era painting.. So I decided to paint up a spare using Mike McVey's design from the protype.
DSCF2698.JPG
The Loin area of the robe isn't as detailed cause.. either the final plastic has it smaller OR it's just WAY too small details.. either way, I didn't think I could get away with the fire AND the Striping either side. Used one of my old Photo background models for it cause it made sense (need to make up a couple to allow it being longer).

Of course, I found the other one.. Might show it sometime.. no clue.. anyway, a couple of bits I'm not sure I'm happy with but trying to copy a talented painter, I think it helped work on improving my painting skills..

Oh.. and I have no clue how he did the helmet.. there appears to be ALOT of fading which.. I just couldn't figure out.. so.. it's not quite as good but fair enough.

On an unrelated side note as I was talking about unreleased HQ stuff.. Original book ends telling you about Kellar's Keep and the Return of the Witch Lord.. which then came out.. fine.. Return of the Witch lord says how Skulmar, one of his servants, has escaped and you will have to fight him!.. Kellar's Keep kinda leads into the Heroquest Advanced 13 mission campaign (Dark Company) which has.. not much of an ending story, Ogre Horde has no ending story, nor does Wizards.. Skulmar ran off with the Powerful spell book of the Witch lord, was aided by Sir Ragnar who had turned traitor before being killed.. Big Build up.. where is the Skulmar campaign?!?

Nice paint job on perhaps the best looking mini in the game. Though one thing that has always bothered me a bit is how Morcar has a skull for face yet is buff as hell. Is he meant to be partially undead or what? Just been hit with that good ol' chaos magic that stripped skin and flesh from his face? Or is it a mask? Simply design choice to rip-off Skeletor? So many questions...

I mean, at the end of the original campaign, Mentor tells you the Witch Lord isn't really dead.. then at the start of Return of the Witch Lord, Mentor is upset to tell you that the Witch Lord isn't dead!... which you already know ¬_¬ no wonder he only knows what's in Loretome.. guy can't remember a thing)
Poor Mentor is getting old... and none of the heroes have the heart to just say: "Yeah, yeah old man, we already know. You told us!"

That wasn't Morcar ^_^ Morcar never appeared in the game as he was weakened in the battle with Mentor and retreated to the Northern chaos Wastes

without going on with the flimation cartoon (not a huge fan), Skeletor was very much stripped skin style as the edges of the face on his head, you saw the flesh, and later on when you saw him without the hood, you very much saw only his face was that style. Depending on your preference, he was even a demon from another dimension (early Masters of the Universe) or he was changed by the pit of chaos (original idea from creator Mark Taylor). Then later on you had all that stupid King's brother rubbish thrown in to make it more generic and dull.

What?! Are you telling me my whole life has been a lie? Been long since I played HeroQuest (and only expansion I got to play was Return of the witch lord). But yeah, now I think I remember; the old bloke on DM's screen is Morcar, no? So who exactly this Skeletor-wannabe is then?

the debate on what does Morcar look like is... complex but it's just 'Chaos Sorcerer' for the figure. The closest to a character for him would be the Witch Lord himself, as when you see him on Return of the Witch Lord, he has a helmet, a skull face, flesh arms (though a bit thinner)

I've tweaked the paint a bit since I took this image (even though I took it tonight) cause.. when you zoom in and stuff, you see some bits you missed or need more work or your eyes just couldn't see.. anyway...

Marauder Giant Ogre I got in a cheap job lot (yay, in fact, the figure was probably worth more then the rest of the lot) but he was missing his arms. So these are basically the arms from a Battle Masters Ogre and fit really well. a couple of bits I think I didn't quite adjust right and I redid some of the fingers on the left hand (closed fist) cause there was no details on them But he means he has gone from an Armless Ogre, to, well, a completed figure.

Colours are based from the Les Edwards 'Against the Ogre Horde' cover (stupid comment, very surprised that I never noticed that the name used in early adverts for the Ogre Horde was 'Attack of the Ogre Horde').

Based was a 25mm slotta based with a custom designed 3D printed outer tray which boosts it to 40mm. If you read some talk else where on this forum, I was planning (and still am) on running a HQ mini-campaign which uses Ogres and Trolls, but I didn't want to use the Ogre Horde ones, I wanted to use it as an excuse to paint up and stuff, some other figures, and some new stuff.. for HQ, you can't really use a 40mm base (there are the AHQ rules and you could patch it but it would change the balance in the original campaign a bit) so this way, He is 40mm for normal WH play (if he gets that) and when it comes time for HQ, he just pops out of the outer 'tray' and there you go. a 25mm figure which is a bit big but not bad compared to the normal HQ squares. He'll be passing as the Ogre Chieftain. Technically he is armed with a glowing red sword but I wasn't about to trying screwing around with that (another random comment, it's a shame that Carl Sargent didn't get quite a much of an editor input at times on work.. While there are some nice kinda pointless flavour details, some rules are... not the best written...)

Kicked out of their craftworlds for reasons of being disinherited, psychotic, murderous or any number of crimes, or even just being ones who want the taste of adventure among alien races, Some Eldar become mercenaries for hire working with the Imperium.
DSCF2709.JPG
these are NOT meant to be Alaitoc Craftworld (who wear blue with yellow helmets) but it does kinda look that way.. also the blue-grey is pretty much the same as my Space Wolves.

4 of these are plastic guardians I got in a job lot, but as they are all the same in the same pose, I wanted to do a bit of change to them. The other two are Space Mercenaries or something by Tim Prow over at Oldschool miniatures and... of course they are clearly eldar.
DSCF2710.JPG
First two are normal Guardians. I did nothing on the first but the second I cut off his head and glued it back at a different angle, so it looks like he is aiming his gun more then just posing.

DSCF2711.JPG
This is a Metal Flamer Tim Prow sculpt, next to a plastic guardian with his head removed and a head from a wood elf set.. I think Oathmark.. though in the end, you can't see his ears or anything and that face could easily be human but doesn't make alot of difference. I did try sculpting a more glam Rock head but the hair didn't turn out well enough before I gave up and just used a spare bit ^_^

DSCF2712.JPG
and finally, though a bit out of focus, what I decided is the captain of the unit as he has a nice coat and finger pointing, another Tim Prow next to a guardian who I adjusted the angle of the gun so it's pointing up a bit more. helps give a bit of variety in the unit.

As I had the 2 metals and the 4 plastics, I though a nice mercenary unit... then when I checked, they are units of 5... Oh well, I had 6 figures anyway.

As I'm not counting what I did back when you could buy this as Painting cause.. really not... this is my first Epic Miniature painted!

A "Space Ork Bonebreaka" plastic, painting for Goffs. Mostly trying to work on cheques.. and boy, I'm not sure if an Epic figure was a great starting option or not. pretty basic job and the goff bulls head on the turret was.. ugh.. yeah.. not fantastic but.. oh well.. are Orks known as good painters?

DSCF2722.JPG
also.. photographing a miniature is a pain.. this is even smaller ¬_¬ but I think most of the photos turned out okay

Nicely done. And while practicing cheques on this scale sounds pretty tough, it gets easier with every attempt and in the future should be way easier to do on "bigger" scale minis.
My suggestion with cheques would be applying paint in thinner coats to get the result as even looking as possible, but honesty this is nitpicking and all that matters is that you're trying and happy with the results. And as you said, orks are not exactly known for their painting skills. :)

To go with my Giant Ogre, the first of the normal ones. This one being a Marauder MM42 Ogre. Mostly bare skin apart from armoured hand, boots and belt with small... I think best description is a posing pouch. I decided a slightly punk hair cause he has weird spikes and growths on some of his body.. So he is a punk Ogre.
DSCF2724.JPG

The writing on the sword, in not very good handwriting really says 'Shameless'.. it's kinda a reference cause he reminded me of an old Japanese comic by a very well known author and this guy would fit right in.

Next would technically be in my Skaven project but not really as I decided for a number of reasons to go into more of a small diorama way.
DSCF2726.JPG
Skaven Corpse 'Dead-dead' was one of the second lot of C47 Skaven and he is kinda rare, being corpse figures didn't seam to sell well.. either you would need ALOT of them for your army, or they were just for dioramas. Doesn't fit on a 20mm base and not really on a 25mm base either, so I decided the best Idea was this little diorama.

DSCF2727.JPG
I got this was a Christmas present cause.. being a pretty rare mini, the price wasn't great (though far from awful) and sometimes people don't know what to get you ^_^. The base (40mmx40) took a while to get right.. I wanted it to look really good but I didn't want it to over shadow the figure. So it's a mixture of stuff.. some I think cork bits and something for the main ground, two different types of static grass which I was using as a test for using Static grass applicator.. not perfect but much better then if I just sprinted the grass on by hand. A plastic shield from a Skeleton set (wargames Atlantic I think) with a design based on one of the old Citadel skaven image, a little resin weed from a green stuff world set, and a little bird from.. I can't remember the company name... they did the official Red Dwarf figures for the convention a few years back. They are kinda generic 'birds' So I have used them as crows, Ravens, eagles... they are probably a bit more eagle like but this works fair enough as a Carrion crow.
