Actually functional girth for...the mount ;)
Fearing to be unable to sculpt a convincing buckle, I've probably overdone it a little

Fellow oldhammerers, Reveal Day has come.

I can finally show you in full what I've been working on in the past few months (VERY few, for my standards...it seems this sculpting thing is waaay easier than splashing paint).

The starting point was this artwork by Mike Ploog, which absolutely DAZZLED me
3aa38faddb2e9a364e0f17dc37588976.jpg

As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to get something similar for my orcs: it exuded orcness, oldsCOOLness, classicfantasiness...It had to be done in 3d

Being the old fart I am, I couldn't just go through bazillions of modern plastic bits, it has to be done in metal in order to get proper textures on it (considering I had not sculpted anything before, apart from some dubious fur and a couple of goblin noses on some shields).

After a brief search, I opted for 2 2nd hand dragon ogre bodies and a cold one (the latter just for its saddle, which in the end I didn't even use), plus an '80s fellbeast head (one of the best ever IMHO)
Starting-point.jpg

After much butchering, I got the basic shape done (one tail became the neck and the 2 legs required bits from all 8 original ones):

but I realised that my plan to make simple joints between the limbs was hopeless: I had to actually sculpt everything and the original dragon ogres limbs became the bones of the new beast

The sculpting process flowed away incredibly smoothly, so that this is the (virtually) finished piece (I realised I'll have to sculpt the back of the sword and a belt for it)

Hope you like it, can't wait to put some paint on it!

Oh my. That's absolutely amazing. Having seen your painting previously, this is going to be mind-blowingly good.

The sculpting has turned out really well. I also liked the photo of you comparing butt shapes!

Really looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

Wow, stunning. Cool illustration and what an amazing job you've done of bringing it to life. The finished piece is going to be just something else judging from all your previous offerings.

Very nice. I know the Mike Ploog art was collected in one of his sketchbooks from the 90s but I can't remember what he did it for.. I don't think it's one of his movie designs.. but either way, you have done a fantastic job on it.

As I later found out, he did it in 1994 for some kind of card game...it was printed on a card and maybe some metal plate.

I didn't know his work, but fell in love with it, as his style is very similar to one of my favourite Italian artists who used to draw lots of Disney comic books in the '60s-90s era (Massimo De Vita)

mm.. I know he did some Magic: The Gathering (a card game I have very little interest in and most of the people that do have an interest, seam to take it as an 'investment' thing and don't give a damn about the game, recently moaning that somethings happened which meant all old cards which have gone up greatly in value to a point where they are unuseable in games, are now work far less) but that doesn't look right for it.. maybe it was though.

I know more of Ploog's work for american comics and his storyboard work on some films like Dark Crystal (his gelflings are a bit off I think, but most of it is good work).

And i'm aware of Massimo De Vita, more then really know his work.

EDIT: Ah. A Mike Ploog Card set by FPG in 1994. That was part of the Metallic Storm chse set 'The Agawa Chieftain'. "The hateful demon would sit for days on his hilltop perch ready to pounce upon any living thing".. not sure if that's talking abou the rider or the beast .. and often that isn't anything to do with the artist anyway..

Just found more infos by Ploog himself on his fb profile:
the artwork is called "The Haunted Wraith" and was made in 1994 for his "FPG Trading Card Series to be used as one of the metallic specialty cards"

Massimo De Vita is responsible for some "fantasy" sagas for both the Ducks and Mickey Mouse, the latter in particular: many details, the stance of the figures, their characterization, their traits look very close between the two artists.

Well done, what a great miniature.

Thank you for sharing your process with us. I really enjoyed your narration, and the succession of pictures.

I'm also looking forward to seeing how you paint it

Thank all of you so much for your appreciation.
It's been quite a satisfaction to actually get it done with...satisfying results
As I said, the illustration made me feel quite an urge to make it, as, basically, it embodied an epitomic vision of a fantasy beast, and this made me forget I was a complete sculpting novice, while the fellow hobbyists whom I shared the project with considered it "rather ambitious" [euphemistic mood off: plain crazy]
Looking back and considering the perfectionist I am, it could have gone terribly wrong: I could have stopped mid way realising my sculpting skill were way off the job or I could have spent months to get a complete mini way below an acceptable standard.

In the end, even if different in many ways from the inspiring artwork, I'm fully satisfied with the mini and can't wait to get it painted: I've already started the "boring" part (the rider), which I hope will not take too much time (the only visible skin part is the face, even if it's got some quite intricate details, and I'm quite quick - relatively speaking - at painting metals); I've planned to paint the beast using mainly some Mig acrylic filters I've tested recently...the aim is to get some interesting colour variations and a "greasy" skin finish, as often seen in Boris Vallejo's depictions of antediluvian beasts

Have some larger images!

You are very welcome to just upload (reasonably sized) images directly to the forum, but services like PostImage work just fine so feel free to use whatever is most natural. The entry you want from the share options in PostImage is Hotlink for forums if you want to link to larger images like those above:

And I should just add - stunning paint job once again, Tex you knock it out of the park. I'll be very interest to see what weathering you add to the halberd.

Thanks for adjusting them. I usually don't have any problem with postimage, but today i uploaded the pics from the phone and the usual proper hotlink didn't show up. Or i've been more tech-impaired than usual

Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm currently away on holiday, but i started to work on it moments after taking these pics:basically a mix of acrylics, pigments (as usual) plus some acrylic filters to enrich the resulting pastiche. Still have to refine and add scratches, but i'm seeing the end
