my first miniature of the year marks a return to my slow burning project to paint up the wandering monsters for frostgrave.



this is golan, a reaper dark heaven bones hill giant i picked up at battleground last year. i've been itching to get some paint on him ever since.



he's not the biggest giant available, so i based him on a thick piece of plywood and a scrap of slate to give him some extra height. here's a scale shot versus harboth and some of his black mountain boys.



i've got a few other larger things in various states of preparation, so may slap some paint on those soon.

from the soles of his feet to the highest point of his neck / shoulder muscles behind his head, ~75mm

The skin tones and armor scrap are very nice indeed.

thanks, i tried to make a bit of an effort as there's so much skin. it's a glaze of valejo game colour dark fleshtone over a coat of hobby paints dark flesh.
i'd hoped for more variation on the armour; there are three significantly different shades of grey on different sections, and black for the rivets, under the citadel ironbreaker.
i hope you manage to overcome your painting block.

we shall see, but with the bulk of snotlings painted, it should at least average larger than last year.

a couple of reaper dark heaven bones giant wererats to do duty as rat ogres for clan renj.



the one on the left was a christmas present. i bought two of the one on the right a few years ago, i shall have a go at converting the other somewhat sometime.



here they are with skrattle the giant ratman, painted over a decade ago.



it seems clan moulder have introduced the use of growth hormones into the breeding pits in the intervening years.

another random encounter for frostgrave. a minotaur this time:



he's minotaur lord 6 from midlam miniatures, picked up at durham wargames show a few years ago.
i chopped off the integral base and narrowed the stance in order to fit him on a 40mm base.



the paint scheme is intended to be reflective of the hellenic / minoan basis of the minotaur myth, whilst the basing hopefully ties him into the roc:latd background.



here he is facing off against an elf who wishes to reclaim the dark heart of the forest for his own people. as you can see, the minotaur is quite a large fellow.

Definitely liking the Hellenistic feel of this! Have you ever played Of Gods and Mortals or anything of that ilk? It would fit in perfectly in that kind of context

i can't say i have. the closest i have approached that genre is erin / romans in the mist 1st edition.

here are my next efforts. the lowest of dwarven society, the oath-breakers who seek to evade justice by taking the slayer oath and then proceed to hang around inns and taverns, safely behind the defensive walls, in human towns and cities in the company of other misfits pretending they are protecting the known world from the threat of chaos cults, rather than disappearing off to the dark lands or wastes to fight the traditional enemies of their people. at least that's how it always seems in wfrp.



at either end there's a marauder sculpt, then from second left we have juggo joriksonn from 'the magnificent sven', throbin death-eye and kimril giant-slayer, both from the 'dwarf lords of legend' box set.



i went with the 'official' hair colours for the three named dwarves. otherwise they're nominally painted to join the kaiserzwerge but are in fact neutral enough to be used with either of my dwarven factions.



here they are fighting a troll, just to demonstrate to me that they do occasionally get out of the pub.

Those really do look fantastic. I had no idea the hair colors were official, but the variety looks great together and they'll make a fearsome addition to whichever grim band they accompany.

... and i now see kimril should have a white beard and eyebrows. i've corrected that now.
i prefer a bit more individuality compared to the uniform orange of today's conformist troll-slayers.

Since it's John Blanche artwork, I think that blue haired dwarf with reddish bracelet, green blade of axe under yellow lettering is because of ballance with GB flag, green grass and yellow lettering of miniatures

But they look superb.

i've made some chain link fence.



i went for two 4"/10cm lengths and one 8"/20cm one.



based on plasticard, the uprights are styrene rod and the chainlink is car body mesh.



i went for 6cm tall posts with 5cm tall wire. i'll probably make the same again in the not too distant future and then see if i need more. i suspect it's the sort of thing you use if you have it.

I made some in 2014, used them once and threw them away in 2020 as they were taking up too much space. My experience may not be representative though!

I use mine fairly regularly. I find they store pretty small, since you can slide many feet of the stuff into a fairly small box. (I did use a more minimal base that's really only just under the posts. The fence itself doesn't seem to require any more support than that.) Anyway, a good fence is always a useful bit of terrain to me. Probably depends on what sort of game you play.

here's the last of the big things i mentioned.



this mantic games mutant ratfiend was a christmas present from my beloved. it will do duty as a hellpit abomination for clan renj.



it's multipiece resin kit, which went together fairly easily, needed a bit of filling but not much clean up.
i watched a few youtube videos about painting glass bottles and vials, but don't think i managed to translate them very well. never mind.

another 'commission' this time. my beloved's dad got her these for christmas, after checking i'd be happy to paint them up for her.



they're 1:48 3d sculpts and came with the supports still attached. not all the fine detail survived their removal unfortunately.
i've left the bases plain in case she wants them to be incorporated into a diorama.

The abominations totally terrifying the skin tone adds to the horror. The vials are fine, as a former Dark Eldar modeller I've seen many and tried a few and those are definitely praise worthy.

the geezer is from (the now sadly defunct) east riding miniatures, whilst the quadcycles and trailers are 1:48 airfix kits.



my beloved's dad gave me the airfix kit when he discovered it was surplus to his requirements.
i had a look around for riders at vapnartak last weekend, but without any luck.
