I still need to refine the technique, but basically you apply your base colour (in this case rusty browns) and then spray on your hairspray (I added salt here, but you don't have to). You then carefully apply the colour the armour was before it rusted (in this case green), over the top. When this is dry, use a stiff brush and scratch away the top layer to reveal some of the rust beneath. The hairspray seems to act a bit like a protective, non-adhering layer between the two coats. I imagine it would be easier to use an airbrush to apply the second coat as I had to be very delicate when adding the green layer. Hope this helps?
