The Lost and the Damned

It's been a while since I've done anything to add to this particular thread; I've been busy with dungein tiles, Frostgrave and a few other projects. But my next set of miniatures to paint are, my now complete, set of Citadel Champions of Nurgle:

I've photographed them in what may be a familiar layout, from the Stuff of Legends website:

The final, missing model I needed to complete the set was the rare champion with axe and Nurgling on his shoulder and I was very kindly assisted by the amazing oldhammer community in helping track one down. You'll notice a few conversions in there too, one due to a broken weapon and others deliberately converted to enhance and make unique the models without losing the essence of the sculpt. A few have been painted by me already, but the rest are to be worked on over the coming weeks so watch this space...

I have dreams of the axe wielding champion with the helmut riding nurgling! You lucky devil!

Great looking group of models.

Funnily enough, that champion with the Nurgling on his head is the ONLY one of the Nurgle champs I've managed to grab so far. He was mislabeled with a few newer Chaos Warriors (one of which was from the 5th-6th edition chariot), and a Slaanesh champion. I was only really interested in the Slaanesh model, but the price on the lot was such a bargain I couldn't pass it up!
Keep your eyes on eBay, you never know what you might find!

The only one you have eh Badaab? Ach, better to trade that guy onto me rather than have to go through the pain of collecting the others. It's you I'm thinking of.

Here's some close ups of the first three completed models from the collection:

And I've almost finished another one...

Here's the next two Nurgle Champions. I've delved into my green paints this time, it's far too easy to do with Nurgle. I've also experimented with some weathering techniques, primarily using the hairspray and salt technique as well as some Matt varnish and dry red oxide pigments:

Looking good!
I'm familiar with salt weathering, but not sure I've run across hair spray - could you give me a quick rundown?

I still need to refine the technique, but basically you apply your base colour (in this case rusty browns) and then spray on your hairspray (I added salt here, but you don't have to). You then carefully apply the colour the armour was before it rusted (in this case green), over the top. When this is dry, use a stiff brush and scratch away the top layer to reveal some of the rust beneath. The hairspray seems to act a bit like a protective, non-adhering layer between the two coats. I imagine it would be easier to use an airbrush to apply the second coat as I had to be very delicate when adding the green layer. Hope this helps?

I'll experiment further and add some photos of my progress, stage by stage.

got to try that sometime. mind you, i haven't gotten the hang of ryza rust yet!

I've painted up three more of the classic Nurgle Champions, only three to go to complete the set...
First up is a slight conversion, I decided to chop off his axe and give him a personal banner to carry over his shoulder. I was a bit stumped as to what to paint onto the standard, so I asked the Facebook Oldhammer community for some ideas and got some great feedback. Initially I plumped for the idea of the Ebola virus painted on; it looked pretty good but needed a focal point. Someone else suggested Kafka's Metamorphosis as a source of inspiration, which I thought was perfect with regards to the RoC Chaos Attributes and obviously the fly mutation that this warrior had developed. Therefore I painted a human/fly skeleton hybrid over the Ebola background and ended up with this:

The collaboration with other Oldhammerers really helped, so thanks for the input and I'm happy with the result.

The next two Nurgle Warriors carry guns. Guns! When I was a kid I steered clear of 40k and disapproved of fantasy figures with technology, even though I knew it was a part of the RoC attribute table. It didn't match my take on Fantasy. So I avoided these Nurgle figures at the time and if it wasn't for the collector in me, I would have done the same again, so it was with some reluctance that I picked these figures up and painted some guns... with lots of rust:

And now I've got a bit of a taste for guns and 40k and with some excellent Rogue Trader games proposed at BOYL 2016, it's time for me to start a futuristic mercenary warband. I've just picked up some Copplestone sculpts...
