The Lost and the Damned

So here's the final thug for the warband based on an old ogre model with some decaying horses heads for the grisly standard itself. I can't quite remember why I had 7 of these in my bitz box (and they've been in there a long time) but I appreciate my own dedication to Nurgle's number even back then..:

Unfortunately I totally forgot to take a photo from the back, which is a shame because I spent quite a bit of time painting quite an old Keeper of Secrets head on the back of the totem, but now no one gets to see it! I'll add a new photo when I take some photos of the nearly completed centaurs.

When I've finished the two centaurs for this warband, I intend to convert and paint models for each of the rolls on the Lost and the Damned retinue table, up to a maximum possible. So I'll be starting with 6 Beastmen, then 6 Nurgle Beastmen, then 8 dwarfs etc, etc, all working towards having a completed 3rd edition army...!

I've finally gotten around to finishing this warband with the two converted centaurs ( but my photos are pretty poop):

And here's the warband all together:

I'm really happy to complete my first warband and see them all together, I think they work well as a group and I'm looking forward to adding to them, I wish I'd have fleshed out a story for them in advance, but I will in retrospect, certainly in time for BOYL 2014, which I'll be bringing these to.

I've got lots of other related projects on the go and I'll keep you updated on this thread.... Cheers

Very fine quality of conversion work and painted beautifully too. For me, as someone who is just starting out with conversions this is something to aspire to.

That is some great conversion/painting skills you show here, can't wait to see your entry for the Bestiary!

Cheers! I've picked out the dwarf I'm to use and a load of the bits, I hope to make a start over the coming week. I'm just finishing off a couple of characterful and perhaps superfluous additions to the warband...

Btw, much like your idea, I plan to create and paint a suitable entry for every roll on the lost and damned retinue table!

A couple of additions to the warband that I completed last night. I was browsing my copy of LaTD and found some nice nuggets of added detail that i wanted to make, for example the Staff of Nurgle (which my leader is wielding) can turn an enemy model into a pile of stinking maggots:

And also that the Palanquin can leave a trail of sticky pools behind it on the roll of a 6 each turn. Any model touching these can contract Nurgle's Rot:

So quite a bit of work involved in finishing these, but very unlikely that either will ever see the field of battle, just feeding my own addiction to all that is oldhammer from this era!

So my new project relating to the Realm of the Lost and the Damned is to complete a representation for every entry on the Retinue Table, starting with D6 (6) generic beastmen. I've gone for some old school models (most of these will be) and included a small Marauder minotaur and a hound too for variety:

Really happy with this two headed, snake armed thug, in particular his loin cloth!

Loved this guy with his dog face (I removed the Khorne symbol from his forehead after much deliberation) and his short, tentacled arm.

Here's the Marauder minotaur - he'll be the champion of the beastmen (when I move from warbands to an army....!). I painted him using just black and white, with greys and even tried a little NMM on the armour and axe with varying degrees of success! I like how the zebra skin turned out.

I thought this manbeast looked quite regal with his outfit so I went for a deep purple. He doesn't seem as mutated as the others, still more human with small horns and cloven feet.

I looked on the internet for some images of hyenas to help paint this hound, I'm quite happy with the colour scheme and blending fur techniques.

And last, but by no means least, is a classic green beastman, copied directly from the Chaos Combat Cards and reproduced in several other GW publications of the period. I designed and freehanded the shield in dark reds to complement the green fur.

And here they are all together, ready to join up with a future Nurgle champion as part of his retinue.

They look good! My only criticism would be that the zebra-taur needs a little more contrast. I'd suggest a Payne grey oil wash in the crevices. But that's just me

Agred, if you don't want to use washes and want to stick with black and white paints, some blacklining could help too. it is absoilutely brilliant though like all of your models. (is the zebrotaur a wink to Don Hans?)
Definitely one of my favourite threads of the showroom.

Wonderful painbtwork.
It was a nice touch to do the pile of worms and pools of slime.

My chaos collection is also mainly to represent the various possibilities of the retinue chart, but I got sidetracked into doing special characters.

All the best as you continue this fine collection.

Cheers all for the comments, much appreciated. I found it really difficult to photograph the minotaur as it is so contrasty and in fact looks quite washed out in the photo, however I agree it isn't quite as good as it could be and I'm tempted to try an oil wash (never before attempted on a miniature) but I like to experiment with new techniques. I have a payne's grey oil paint somewhere and some linseed oil...

With regards to the zebra pattern, it was actually influenced by an old white dwarf article by dale hurst about his chaos warband which included a winged, zebra striped minotaur. Don Hans work does inspire me though, and I'm sure most of us on here!

LOVE the green Death on the Reik beastman! Spot on. 8-)

Regarding oil washes, you can also use turps to thin so long as you are not painting directly over enamels. With enamels, you can just hit the mini with an acrylic clear coat first & everything should be fine.

The other nice thing about oil washes is that off you apply to much, you can feather it out with a little bit off turpentine.

Will definitely be trying some oil based techniques on a future model, but for now I have the next addition on the Retinue Table: D6 Beastmen of Nurgle. I'd converted and painted these a while ago, but for completeness sake I'll post them here. They are a mix of plastic plaguebearers and beastmen with lots of other additions, and although not strictly oldhammer, are painted in what I think is a Realm of Chaos style:

More photos up on my blog!
