The Age of Strife

I had great intentions to build a Baneblade with a Rhino back in the day… I harvested all the parts required, but didn’t know where to get the Plasticard required. The spare half of the Rhino was kitbashed with refill paper card into a full vehicle which I still have (unpainted of course…)!

I did start the Baneblade back as a youth, but I only had quite thin plasticard at the time so it never really quite worked. Maybe one of these days I'll tackle it again! I'm still slowly using up the bits from it when I need small offcuts of plasticard.

Do they even make rhinos these days? can't seam to see one.. but can't say I've looked too hard.. I got a couple of rhinos, a razorback and a whirlwind but they are all the first set kits. Though I do have a template I made to make my own rhino cause I wanted to try some.

And whilst linking I guess the Land Raider is worth linking to: https://www.warhammer.com/en-GB/shop/legiones-astartes-land-raider-proteus-2022 I've got one of those somewhere as I gave up trying to get a classic one that was complete and not up near £100 on ebay. To be fair it looks like a pretty decent kit.

Does the community here do a scratchbuild competition type thing?
That's a nice idea.

not yet.
perhaps the closest we've had:

And time for something different. I'd been thinking for a while I could do with a board as a base for photographs and whilst I do have various bits knocking around they are generally up in the loft. So I thought I'd try out something quick and simple and large enough to fill the frame.

I picked up one of the Jarvis Battle Zone Mats - which are just one of their grass mats (~2' x 4') with some gravel and extra static grass thrown on and glued it to a spare bit of 10mm XPS. Then threw on some more grass and ground cover, gave it a spritz with some brown ink in a few places and a decent coat of lacquer to seal it and job done.

Other than a little warping now the PVA has fully dried and shrunk it's come out okay. Will tidy up the edges tomorrow, but should do as a reasonable base. I cut it into two sections - one which can serve as a mini skirmish board and one I'll use for photographs. Which I didn't do that well in this case as there is a giant shadow over the board :)

Neat idea, have my old flock mat sitting around that could easily be tarted up a little to act as a base for photos with the lovely Jon Hodgson backdrops got for my birthday. :)

Just watch the warping if you slap down the PVA and do a "me" and temporarily forget about the shrinking when it dries ... did manage to get a bit worse overnight. I'll either do the old PVA the other side trick or tack it onto a frame or something at some point when I get a minute. However it will serve just fine for what I intended.

AHH not just me then, I flocked some polystyrene sheet with tealeaves, day after it was curling up on the corners. Think it would shrink less if the PVA was watered down?

Mats looking good btw.

I guess that might reduce the shrinking a bit, a thin layer is probably the main order of the day and then sealing over the top of the flock probably. I doubt there is that much that can be done if you're slapping it on, there are other glues of course! This was very much a "what can I do that is quick and lets me pretend I'm not just avoiding work" project :) Hence the random bit of XPS I had around. I suppose now it's done I should photograph those snotlings!

still dealing with a bit of warped card due to PVA ^_^ starting to get better but not got many weights I can find do I can press it down to try to counter the warp while gluing to new base.. cause it's already got too much glued on it to really cut it off and rebase.
