The Age of Strife

So nice to be back at the painting desk! I managed to find four Nurglings I missed when I did a large batch job on all my Nurglings (which reminds me I should start a Nurgle thread for that stuff) a year or two back. These four poor little things will find their way onto some bases of other models as the year's painting progresses.

One last pass I think and maybe a drop of varnish to protect them in storage.

For a bit of compare and contrast to the previous Nurglings some Midhammer Nurglings that I did post mixed in here, but have just found a WIP photo I must have taken that you might like to see since it shows them more clearly.

I think they lost the cuteness the old ones had - that proper chaotic demonic cuteness...?

you're right, but a few bright colours would probably mitigate that somewhat.

That's a good point and idea. I've one more of these I found recently that I felt needed a bolt gun adding to it (for that traditional RT conversion look) so maybe I'll try to break the painting mold a little when I get to it and have at the colours a bit more!

The current WIP!

I picked up this pile of good old orcs and gobbos off eBay. I just fancied some older style orcs and the metals are often a tad expensive so despite this lot looking like they need some TLC and of course being monopose they hit the nostalgia heart strings and the price was about right.

At least half have had some kind of conversion and a lot of the orc had their swords removed and cocktail stick polearms adding instead, a good number had some paint directly on the plastic. I left one "as was":

So I've stripped the paint and now it's the idle cleaning up of the old conversions (some of the weapon removal left chunks of sword guard and damage to the arms) and removing the mold lines, tidying up the excesses of poly cement, etc. No concrete plans yet, but once they are cleaned up I'll see about printing some new weapons and will finish the prep work. Hopefully when they come across the painting table they will be quite quick to do. I keep wondering about trying out this slapchop method of painting, maybe this big batch would be a good candidate?

Some of the cleaned up:

Anyhow it makes for some relaxed modelling in front of the tele!

I've finished removing mold lines from all the orcs now and started with some weapon repairs (3D prints: 158819 & 283879):

After that it'll be time for a bit of green stuff round the necks and on the arms where they were notched when the previous owner cut the weapons off. After they are all cleaned up I guess onto the goblins. A fair few of those have had their bows cut off, but leaving the tip of the bow on their leg - so I need to trim all that away and where necessary tidy up their new weapons. Shields will go back on over arms that are a bit glue covered so hopefully I don't need to worry too much about cleaning them up that much

Quite enjoying cleaning up someone else's childhood efforts and the simplicity of the models is certainly appealing. I might leave the banner chap as he is, not quite decided yet!

Thanks. Paint might be a little way off yet, but heading towards it at least!

So the first pass of mold line removal is done now for everything and I can properly see what I have.

Pretty decent haul I think. There turned out to be three elves in the box and I've got one goblin archer with a dark elf head glued on - so I don't suspect he'll get used! Still something like 90 minis in total.

I think I might clean up the banner chap to round out the numbers. I now need to print a few more weapons to fill out the missing spots and it's out with the green stuff to tidy up around the necks. I'm wondering about pomels for the goblin hand weapon conversions - they would look better, but it would be a bit of a pain. Might see what a ball of green stuff there looks like rather than trying to glue something more sculpted in place.

Most of the shields are too firmly stuck on to remove, but I wasn't going to spend ages painting these so restricted access isn't the end of the world. In fact I've been wondering about trying out the slapchop method with some of the Vallejo orc flesh xpress paint. I'm going to worry about missing shields once they are painted. I have some that popped off and a few I printed so can add those if I want to.

Right time to find a box for them and a few evenings of green stuff await!

I think a Goblin archer with a Dark Elf head should be okay. Got any Scabbies? they can be Half-orc or half-goblin, looked down on for not being 'proper' goblinoids. So no problems there ^_^

Well despite telling Sewers that it'd be months before anything was painted I found myself needing to do some airbrushing and thought I'd pop a primer coat on a few of the orcs and do a test of the slapchop method. Or rather underpainting as it used to be called before it became trendy :)

So I took five of the orcs and did a dark green prime on them - pretty much what I shall call "HeroQuest Orc Green" (Nato Green / Panzer Grey), and then did several layers of progressively lighter grey up to white dry brushing on the models. Then the skin was done in the Orc Flesh Xpress Color from Vallejo and I did the belts and bits in various other "contrast/contrast like" paints I had to hand. Metallics were done as normal and washed over with black.

I was pleasantly pleased with the results. They need a bit of tidying up on the faces - eyes and maybe a tiny additional highlight. Perhaps some rust on the metals? Still given I didn't want to spend ages painting these, but I didn't want them to be too rough and ready - I "hobby" more than I "game". I think I'm happy enough with them that I'll do the rest like this as time permits and results can go on my Orc thread. I don't think I will abandon glazes for my highlighting generally as I like the softer look, but for getting some stuff done quickly this method seems to get you tabletop ready without too much fuss.

Next step will be seeing how the goblins come out using the same technique.

These are delightful- I’m especially fond of the metallics and the use of undercoating turned out well! I haven’t gotten much good use from the contrast paints.. seeing your results I’ll have to give it another go in the future.

I've pretty much stuck to the various "leathers" and browns for the most part getting a few GW and Army Painter ones I use when doing pouches and belts sometimes. I've found them very useful for that purpose to "just do" a belt or pouch.

I've now got a few Vallejo ones (including the orc flesh used here) and a red to use with these orcs (for the clothing). I also got a purple GW one I used on my Beast of Nurgle. I wanted to blend the tentacles out and thought a contrast paint would help facilitate that, which it did. I've also found that purple to be quite good for mouth insides on beasties. I'd been using Vallejo's Smokey Ink for years for wood and that works much like contrast paints (from before we had contrast paints).

So I've just been using them "here and there" in my painting so far. I do have a friend that went all-in on Army Painter Speed Paints (version 2) and loves them, he's knocking out fairly decent looking models at a good rate now. I think I'll probably stick to using them piecemeal as (generally) I enjoy painting more than the actual gaming!

Well after a rather exhausting session at several data centres I did at least find a lovely eBay present to myself sat at home ...

So two (top) I'm familiar with. The two missing weapons (bottom) I don't instantly recognise. So I shall have to go and look around and see if they are citadel or someone else. Still I wanted the classic two for ages so glad they are finally mine and the price was okay.

Time for a dip in the paint stripper tomorrow - apologies if your recognise your paintwork, nothing wrong with it, but I do fancy doing theses myself.

Off the 1985 flyer those bottom two might be the Warlord and Mercenary. Anyone confirm? Expect I can go and find some better pictures... Alas I didn't pay £1.95 each for them ... although in today's money that is about £6, but alas I didn't pay that either :( £10 each which seemed okay given how crazy some stuff is these days.
