Hey, it's nice someone likes 3rd edition DE  I like them too, to be honest... There are issues, but the range has certain charm (Marauder range included).

My issue is mostly the limited amount of warrior sculpts in the Citadel range - Witch elves and Crossbowmen I'm fine with. I kind of agree that Manhide's unit would be a decent base for one warrior unit and another could be composed of standard models... but there would be repetition. The problem is that in an 8th edition army the "basic" unit is spearmen... I really don't have the heart to cut weapons off from 30-40 old metal models!

The spearmen are definitely an issue. I'm reluctantly using the 4th edition DE spearmen (I'm not a big fan of these models) but I'm very slowly collecting Melnibonean Infantry with spears to replace them but at the rate I'm collecting them I'll be 100 before I've got a unit of 20. I use Melnibonean cavalry as Dark Riders and they mix very well with the 3rd edition range. I've always been tempted to see how the 3rd edition metal Elves with plastic spears paint up in dark elf colours but they don't come up as frequently as I'd like on ebay nor at a price I'm willing to jump in at.

@Hetz - Wow! Those look like seriously great models! What's the going rate for them nowadays? Checking ebay £8 a model is out of my price range. :(

On Ebay, extortionate it seems. I need a command, so I've been checking recently. But Steve was selling them quite cheaply, maybe he can get more.

Don't hate me but.. I've just nabbed the musician for 99p on ebay! It's been listed for months, I always thought it wasn't a Citadel model so I used to ignore it.

*waves optimistically at Steve*

Re: My speed-painted Dark Elf Army (3rd edition models)

I think I'll leave this project when I've completed the stuff I have - so no spearmen for me at this time. Maybe I'll collect and convert spearman stuff eventually.

One of my friends had the knights of the cleansing flame back in the days. I can ask if he still has those, but I'm a bit skeptical. I used most of my metal/plastic spear elves as Cold One Knights, but I think I have around five around (I'm not going to part with the horses). Maybe I'll have to sort out my trades? I also have a few monopose WE spearmen (I used two for my Dark Riders), but these are unarmoured.

Re: My speed-painted Dark Elf Army (3rd edition models)

Think I may have a spare command for the KoTCF. No spare troopers though.

Re: My speed-painted Dark Elf Army (3rd edition models)

I meant to say to Hetz I didn't realise he was after the command models when I nabbed the musician. I'm not *that* much of a git! :)

@pahvivalmiste - Trades would be good.

Re: My speed-painted Dark Elf Army (3rd edition models)

No worries, Erny may be able to sort me out. If not, they'll turn up eventually, they always do.

Re: My speed-painted Dark Elf Army (3rd edition models)

Pretty sure I have a standard and a musician in my big bag of trades.

Re: My speed-painted Dark Elf Army (3rd edition models)

Hello,

thanks again for the comments, everyone. This was not supposed to be ”a plog”, but it seems supposing is bad for me  Following this line of thinking: I didn’t live up to my expectations and managed to paint only the Black Guard last weekend. Chariot, Manticore and Cauldron of Blood are still on the front of the production line… and a Dragon, individuals and 5 Dark Riders are lurking behind them.

Anyways, here’s the Black Guard (and a “Blink Dog”, which I intend to use as backup unit filler).

I experienced a case of “cloudy” mat varnish with these – I blame the repairs took the time I intended for other stuff last weekend. Anyways, at least these are ready. And they’d better be, as I have a game I’m using these today.

There are some conversions (halberd heads are current Chaos Marauder Horsemen axes) and a lot of duplicates (six hair-dudes, five spear-dudes with padded armour and three halberd dudes with padded armour). The standard is a bit simplistic, but will do for now. Most of the models are originally meant to be used as spearmen, but I feel these work ok as Black Guard too. Some of them could be even used as Excecutioners… but here the limited number of different models in the 3rd edition Dark Elf range would mean a lot of duplication.

Thanks for looking :)

Re: My speed-painted Dark Elf Army (3rd edition models)

They look great! :) Just slow down the painting speed though because you're making me look very lazy!

Re: My speed-painted Dark Elf Army (3rd edition models)

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone. I have accelerated the phase  The project is almost complete, there are only six Dark Riders and a few odd infantry left to paint.

Re: My speed-painted Dark Elf Army (3rd edition models) 25.3

Very nice stuff as always. I had a similar idea with the Elf chariot myself using some bits I won on ebay. :) I also really like the armour on your lord riding the dragon. Moreso, give that I've never been fond of that DE sculpt but with what you've done he looks really great!

Re: My speed-painted Dark Elf Army (3rd edition models) 25.3

They all look great but I have to agree that the Lord on dragon is quite special...the white armor is a brilliant idea.

Your pace is quite impressive....I've been working on the same 15 guys during the same time period you've complete a whole army!

Cheers,

Blue

Re: My speed-painted Dark Elf Army (3rd edition models) 25.3

I'm quite jealous! I love the old 3rd edition Dark Elves, but have none of them...maybe one day I'll acquire enough to build an army.
