My Dark Elf Army (3rd ed, was finished but...) 1.2.2014

Re: My Dark Elf Army (3rd ed, was finished but...) 6.1.2014

Those darkriders are many kinds of awesome!

It's impressive how you managed to keep all the dark tones together and still have a visually effective unit without muddying the total!

Hoo-ray, I managed to finish the Warlocks!

Overview:

Warlocks from a different angle:

Nothing extraordinary here: varnish and highlights after dip, details and basing. I decided to change the hair colour – I’m not sure if it was for the better, but this will do.

WIP Kharibdyss, Shades and Army Standard Bearer on foot:
WIPkhari_zps9e35fd4c.jpg

Kharibdyss is a new five-headed sea monster in the 8th edition army book (it’s model is a Kharibdyss/Hydra dual kit). There’s no old model and I opted to make a conversion. I was able to get a Tom Meier Dragon for reasonable price (it’s still in production, some company in the US makes it) although my preferred choice would have been the Marauder Dragon. I guess this will do.

I ran into problems when sculpting scales. It’s very time-consuming with just a model knife and thus I got frustrated and just played around with the necks. I’ll probably arrange myself a special tool and redo the scales. The sculpting of heads is also not the best, but I was in a hurry

There’s also a five-man unit of Shades and Standard bearer on foot – all are dipped but not varnished yet. Some movement trays and rest of the stuff is still waiting after these…

Asslesman: I'd recommend washes over dipping - it's speedier based on my experience with a Beastman army. Also less messy, especially with babies around (our twin daughters are nine and a half wee... months now). But dipping has it's own appeal if you want a kind of uniform look. I've found that it does not work that well with certain skin tones, though. And thanks for the comments and encouragement, Tzigane and bug!

Edit: And congrats for the baby, mr. A.!

Re: My Dark Elf Army (3rd ed, was finished but...) 23.1.2014

Wow - your Kharibdyss is amazing and a billion times better than the latest GW cack. Dont knock yourself about the heads sculpting, you've done a grand job.

Re: My Dark Elf Army (3rd ed, was finished but...) 23.1.2014

I hate you.. you made me start a Oldhammer Dark Elf force this week dew to amazing work your doing here... The Wife also hates you hehe

Re: My Dark Elf Army (3rd ed, was finished but...) 23.1.2014

The Kharibdyss is splendid, really nice use of an old model. I won't compare this one with the plastic kit because it's just 2 different worlds at this point. I would be interested to know what company still casts such references if you remember.
Thnaks for the wash Vs Dip thing, I don't know why but I've always been reluctant to trying dip because since it's basically varnish I would fear to drown details.

Oh and thanks for the son, he seems to be oldhammer-friendly since he lets his father paint at night and doesn't cry much ;).

Re: My Dark Elf Army (3rd ed, was finished but...) 23.1.2014

CC, thanks for the compliment – though I have to second mr. A’s comment about old and new era figures being two different worlds. My main hobby influences are from the late 1980’s and the early 1990’s and I’l keep it that way

Chico_: I’ve always had certain appeal when it comes to the fairer sex…erm… anyway. I hope you get your project going. I noticed your trade thread but unfortunately I don’t have much to offer :(

A: While looking for the dragon I learned that Iron Wind Metals sells (makes?) some old Ral Partha/Citadel Dragons: http://ironwindmetals.com/store/index.php?cPath=266

BTW our twins are also oldhammer friendly! A couple of times a week they wake me up at 4 or 5 a.m. after which I can’t get sleep anymore – they arrange me some hobby time (they finally wake up at around 7 a.m.)!

I second this

Really nice job on the sea monster thing. It has a very old hammer look.

I only recognize one of those dragons from the link as old citadel. Which other ones are also from GW?

Re: My Dark Elf Army (3rd ed, was finished but...) 23.1.2014

mbh: I think the following are Tom Meier Dragons (Citadel title):

Blue Dragon (DG3 Blue Dragon)
Celestial Dragon (DG1 Oriental Dragon)
Great Fire Dragon (DG5 Fire Dragon)

I am no dragon expert, though.

Ps. oops, looking back at my Dark Riders it seems like I forgot to paint a nipple

Re: My Dark Elf Army (3rd ed, was finished but...) 23.1.2014

I knew the blue and fire were citadel. I wasn't aware of the celestial dragon though.

I'm really glad you posted that link. I have a fire dragon from back in the day but I chopped it up a bit because I'm an idiot. Really happy I can buy a new version.

Re: My Dark Elf Army (3rd ed, was finished but...) 23.1.2014

Lovely Kharibdyss! That is going to look amazing once painted.

Re: My Dark Elf Army (3rd ed, was finished but...) 23.1.2014

Minor update… I changed my painting plan a little. There’s a tournament today and I managed to finish my BSB this morning  I should have done the shades, but no can do.

Ps. Thanks for the comments!
Pps. I'm happy if my link was helpful, mbh

Very nice! I'm assuming the wings on the dragon horse are a conversion; or did they release a winged version?

Thanks! It's a conversion, I used wings from an old Small Dragon.

Absolutely splendid BSB! The Dragon Horse conversion is top notch and with the right colour scheme/mood you have turned a Wood Elf Mage into a sinister Dark Elf ;)

Great stuff!

Cheers

Gary

Beautiful conversion, painting, freehand & selection of models for the BSB. I make that a complete package ;)
