BOYL The Engines of Avalone Siege game

Dear all,

I know we are bringing a whole bunch of figures, some houses and a lot of castle walls. I thought it worth posting up a list of some of the less obvious things we need or may need to make this game look the way we want it to. If people could respond to confirm what things from this list they are bringing I can perhaps stop panicking and trying to do everything. Here is the list and I’ve added the numbers of what I can bring afterwards, it would be a help to know what you could bring.

Siege equipment
Attackers:
Log rams 2
Covered rams possibly 1
Siege towers 1 possibly 3.
Ladders some, at least two good ones.
Mantlets 3
Earth works. none

Defenders:
Piles of rocks none yet, easily made but would prefer not to.
Piles of boulders none yet, easily made but would prefer not to.
Braziers none, harder to make and would prefer not to.
Cauldrons of oil/water none, harder to make and would prefer not to.

Table dressing
Roads/paths flexible or otherwise. Some meant for 15mm so paths really, some 28mm but cannot find.
Hedges/walls. Again some, not enough to stop the table looking like a barren plain.
Trees/woods Enough for a few good woods, mainly coniferous though.
Fields about 4 or 5 cut from a welcome mat.
Rough terrain bits but probably not appropriate for terrain.

Houses/Farms and villages for outside the city. Hopefully we have this covered.
Houses that could be used inside the city. Five or six buildings, more if I find time to put together card buildings.

Dear All,

I have various terrain features, but have limited space (new new car is on the small side), so bringing hedges, walls and trees limits numbers of figures - I bring; will bow to the greater good as required?

Regards

I picked up the Siege Defenders set for £5 when we were at Deeside Defenders - just need painting.

Would love to get a covered ram built but am running out of time!! I'm sure a few log rams and ladders won't be hard to knock up. I had hoped to do a siege tower as well as I have a spare gun from the Lead Belcher that would have gone beautifully on the top!

I've got loads of table dressing (see my Orc's Drift thread) including card buildings, log pallisades, stone walls, hedges, fences, 1 ploughed field, trees and shrubberies for a couple of good sized woods, roads, a river with ford and bridge, hills, ruins.

I'll see what I can do about the covered ram.

How long is a piece of string Harry. This game appears to have one maxim only, more, more more. Or to be more realistic, we'll just play it by ear, if you have space and inclination plaes bring somehting to add to the experiance though I figure you're already bringing alot.

Thantsants, does the defenders set have boiling oil? If anything ngets painted let it be that, we cannot ahve a siege game withotu at least one lot of boiling oil. I have the 6th ed covered ram but have misplacesd the wheels. If I find them I will bring it. Ajax is nperfect, he may take the whole game to reach the walls though.

Paul and Steve, main thing nis to see you there and you both bring the gems you've show us and told us about already. If ypou find time and or space anything nis welcome.

Pretty sure it's the whole set - I'd love to see some of my poor Gobbo's deep fried!

Ajax has a whole regiment of Bog Goblin spearmen to prod him ever faster into battle - he might make it to the gates by Saturday evening...

I'm thinking about purchasing some bits from Sally 4th by way of rams and siege towers and Orcifying them.

Can any of you chaps tell me the height of the castle walls from base to the top of the crenulations - If I get the opportunity I'll build a siege tower & ladders

I'll be bringing eight or nine village buildings (resin), including a tower, and a couple of cows to add to the farmyards. I can also bring river pieces if that would be helpful. I don't have any hedges or the like, but could bring a few piles of rocks for the defenders if still needed. Would it be best for them to be mounted on 25mm or 50mm washers? They'll just be pebbles glued together, but that's all I'd have time for :?

Oh, and AJAX!!! I'm really looking forward to seeing him in the lead; one of the models that has most fired my imagination in recent years 8-) :ugeek:

OK folks, I now have the materials and just need the crucial piece of information - How highs the wall from the base to the top of the crinulations, can anybody oblige?

In hope

Hi Paul,

Walls are 9 cm floor to walkway 12cm to top of crenelation.
Tower is a bit taller 17.5 cm.

Hope that helps ...

... I thought we talked about reducing the amount you were planning to build and paint?

A trip into Hobby Craft on the way home this evening, got the better of me - a few pieces of balsa wood, sticky tape & matchsticks and twenty minutes with a Drimel and I now have three ladders able to reach the top of the crenelations, two figures wide, not a real hardship to run up. The towers maybe a bit more of a challenge.

I have a pretty quiet day tomorrow, so will see how far I get, the wheels may prove a step to far - so, possibly will run on rollers!

See you there

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with Paul.

That's quite an arsenal Steve - good job I've got a big pile of Orcs and Gobbo's finished for you to shoot at!

Can't wait to see the Ass Cannon - I think!

Seeing all these guns makes me think - I'm just making so much matchwood and then I remember Steve's dice rolling!

Steve your artillery complements perfectly what I have been painting.
I have been painting lots of Infantry but NOT the artillery.

I am aiming to have the following painted up by BOYL ... Approx:
40 Robin Hood and his Merrymen types.
Men at arms types: (Blue and cream heraldry)
20 Archers
20 Spearmen
20 Two handed weapons
10 Crossbowmen.
10 Crossbowmen
10 Crossbowmen
and Brigands:
16 Brigand Crossbowmen
16 Brigand Spearmen/Two handed weapons mixed.(Can split)
8 Brigand Crossbowmen
6 Brigand Crossbowmen.

Total: 176 Men on foot.

Only have 6 Knights painted.

I can also bring lots of timber framed town houses and peasant village type houses, hedges etc.
However if everyone comes who has asked for a lift .... I might not have the space for the fortified manor house.

I can bring more mighty fortress bits but let me know if you need it and I will get it painted.
