I'm finding greenstuff to be difficult to use when trying to get nice straight edges but good for organic shapes. So struggled with the helmet compared to working on noses and beards but its all about learning.
Anyway just about finished just need to touch up the tunic around the belt.
As you can see its my attempt to get at least one of the Bood dwarfs holding a two handed weapon in both hands! Its not perfect and I'm sure the minute I add paint I will see plenty of mistakes but I like him and that's what matters in the end.
Got slightly side tracked from the rank and file to paint up a couple of command figures. As you can see these are not new Bood Dwarfs but the classic/vintage Perry dwarfs from so many years ago !! Luckily I have plenty of these so all my units can have them. I decided to go for heraldry representing their helmets so Unicorn and Hand. However really struggled with both designs the hand just looks wrong but was the best of a bad bunch and the unicorn ended up looking more like a chess piece !
^Why am I suddenly picturing a game of chess involving dwarves and orks? Lovely stuff, as always. And the careful coordination between shields and helmets is a very nice touch indeed.
Finished the 3rd hero. With this one I've tried to paint the classic Boar transfer design for the heraldry. Its not great but it will do ! Also painted up 3 standard bearers so only the musicians to go.
Its great that their moustaches poke out like that... Just like in the grave-statues (I'm sure there is a proper term for this in english) of thirteenth and fourteenth century knights.
^Is effigy the word you're looking for? (A "sleeping" depiction of the significant person memorialized, frequently in armor.) They're not always on graves, though even when not I believe they stand in as a sort of memorial.
Not much time for hobbying but have finally managed to paint up the drummers for my command groups. Not a huge fan of these figures and it quickly became a case of just getting them done !
You've managed to differentiate the same sculpt through painting in quite a smart way, i'd say. Love their placid expression - I expect they don't hear much anymore.
Not much painting being done but slowly getting there with the 3 units. I've ranked them all up in to the units as a way to try and inspire me to get them complete ! Some are missing shields and weapons.
Annoyingly when I varnished the command group models instead of coming out matt they have a definite shine to them and its still there after a second coat so not sure what to do. You can see it the most on the first 2 photos.
These are looking amazing, proper iron shod beardy warriors (I've also had a drool over the orcs you posted a while back - stunning army).
I don't think that the commands look overly shiny in the photos, however I have read that a thin coat of lahmian medium over the top of varnish takes the shine off/gives a dull coat finish. Worth a punt?
^^I've had the sheen problem myself. It's happened mostly whenever I've used a gloss varnish first and then gone back with matte after. The second coat of varnish seems to sink into the first coat somewhat. I wonder if maybe using an acrylic varnish on top of an oil based varnish or vice-versa would help to alleviate that. Maybe? Bit of a mystery to me still. I'll let you know if I try something and it works.
Either way, those fellas look fabulous ranked up. Fantastic stuff indeed!
I've managed to solve the shine with some Vallejo Matt varnish . The decision for me now is do I carry on with the Army Painter spray or use a brush and the vallejo ? Luckily I'm a while away from having anything new painted up in need of varnish so can give it a think.
As I said painting time is really lacking so instead I've used the minutes I've had spare to work on a larger base for some artillery I plan on painting.
