A bit more Genestealer Cult stuff to show. More pictures and writing on my blog.

Did you achieve the effect on your genestealer cult the same way? I'd be really interested to understand how you did them as the shading is just beautiful.

No, for some reason I paint 40k figures completely differently to fantasy. My aim for 40k is more an over-saturated, 2000AD/Rogue Trader semi-realistic style. I prime black, drybrush metals, then apply base colours leaving a small amount of black to demarcate each different colour/area of the miniature. Next I apply an ink wash to each colour and when it is dry, use thin layers to highlight. I think a few important things to make this work for me is to try not to use black or dark brown wash (except for dark browns) in order to avoid dulling and muddiness, avoid highlighting using white to keep colours and contrast rich, and to finish off with free hand markings (such as numbers, tattoos, patterns) and textures (mottled skin, veins, clothing, gloss surfaces, and matt surfaces) which seem to pull everything together.

Thank you for the write up. I'll definitely be putting it to use with my billion points of rats.

Good luck with the rats mbh, hope to see them sometime! You obviously have the same obsession with Andy Chambers skaven as I. Here's what he wrote about the army in his interview on Realm of Chaos 80s:

RoC80s: Everyone remembers your third edition Skaven army, did you still have it or what became of it?

AC: I still have it in three ancient black army carry cases because I can never let anything go. It's travelled across the Altlantic with me twice and hasn't seen a battle in probably twenty years. I do still look at it occasionally though, sadly some of the thinner-ankled Clan Eshin guys are on the verge of snapping off due to degradation of the white metal with them being so old. Varnish your figures people!

Let's keep our fingers crossed we'll see more of it one day!

Protist- thanks for the painting tips, I will try out your suggestion, I plan to experiment a bit more in the future.

And to all who have taken the time to offer encouragement thanks so much it definitely adds much fuel to my creative energy, please forgive me if I can't reply to every comment, as much as I want to, I am a very slow typist.

That's amazing tat he still owns the army. I actually sent him a message a few years ago offering to buy the rats. I'm not sure he ever saw it though.

And I'm all too familiar with clan eshin ankled breaks.

Making some more progress on the Genestealer Cult. Painted up some more hybrids including this Icon Bearer. The banner is inspired by Philippe Druillet, must read comics! I've been looking back through lots of old Heavy Metal comics lately, it has been very inspirational. I go into a bit more detail and show a few more pics on my blog.

I love the banner - I'm not familiar with Druillet, but his work looks worth checking out. The cult is already looking stunning - a real visual treat!

Re: AW: Archaeopteryx's Mild Case of Lead Poisoning

Just perfect:
model selection,
choice of colours,
banner motif...
(Is the banner a freehand or done with printer support?)
What ever, its an alien god in it's full glory.

Thanks all, glad you like it. I can't take credit for the banner apart from choosing the image and adding a few details. It's a Druillet image which I shrunk down, printed onto paper, redefined a bit with a very fine brush, added additional details, then colour. Was going for similar imagery to the banners depicted in the various genestealer cult artwork from Space Hulk with alien writing, glyphs, and a kind of Hindu god-like figure. Like the pictures below by Tony Hough.

Looks absolutely brilliant. Amazing paintjobs and smooth conversion

/question: the cultist to the right. Where are those bare arms from?

^Dooz

While you weren't asking me, I believe I recognize the parts. They're from Necromunda Orlock figures. I think they're plastic arms, but the arm with the uzi may well be metal. I can't find that arm in my plastic parts at present, but I can find the gun on a metal figure. (Wouldn't guarantee I'm not just missing it somewhere.) The Necromunda arms make useful conversion parts if you can come by them. Larger selection of guns and weapons useful for human and human like figures, as long as you don't mind either bare arms or sculpting some clothing onto them.

Those limos are brilliant. COMPLETELY F#&%^G BRILLIANT!!!!!

And your musical tastes make me want to rip out the innards of strangers and eat them in the street.

I'm headbanging on my lunch break in a shirt and tie.

I am stealing your ideas.

Haven't really had a chance to sit down and work on some miniatures for a while, that is until now. These Jes Goodwin ogres are amazing, their large size, exaggerated proportions and characterful details make them so fun to paint.

I spoke to Jes a few years back and he said he basically only sculpted 2 kinds of face - a thin version of his (elves, Eldar) or him on steroids (Marines). I guess this one is on steroids on steroids!

I love the changes of colour on the face - nose, lip and particularly the black eye.

Looks great, another real winner, love how you painted all the hairy parts, and the face is just amazing, so much character
