World Building

I was going to post this little fella over on my Undead thread, but he's more terrain than terrifying so he can go here instead. Not a very oldhammer miniature, in fact a print. Still quite a fun few minutes of painting. I can't quite remember if I've already posted it somewhere else on the board. So apologies if that is the case. Still the camera was out today and so I snapped him.

Looking at it now I should probably add some dirtying down on it really to make it a bit more terrain-y

Great work enhancing the dwarf fort on previous page! Original was not bad as such, but it definitely looks like a whole different piece with some additional details and repainting. Also digging the little scene you set up with dwarfs hanging out on patio, especially little guy enjoying a pipe of tobacco, just admiring the view. Taking a breather from hectic life to relax and truly appreciate the beauty around you is great. Doing this whilst sitting on a pile of goblins is priceless.

I also think skeleton looks really nice as is, well and truly bleached under the sun and picked clean by carrion birds.
Might not be your thing to add on bases but I think some wildflowers would add splash of colour and give a nice contrast on rather grim piece of scenery?

I like the idea of some flowers, might well do that.

So keeping with the general background work for some reason I suddenly felt like making up a few "bog brush" woods. I've never quite decided which woods I really like. We had a mix of railway trees when young including some K&M ones (but they seemed so expensive then in the railway model shop). When I got back into the hobby I picked up some more realistic model railway trees for a board and I was going to then make some further trees myself using the Woodland Scenic armatures, having firmly decided the K&M ones were just a bit silly. However nostalgia firmly has it's hooks sunk in and I picked up a lot of odd trees (mostly K&M and a few GW ones) in a few auctions and given K&M are a local business I invested in a few others. They've sat in a box in the loft for a while now.

Anyhow I decided to make up a few - so grabbing some 5mm foamed PVC sheet I cut out some bases (that in theory will tessellate to fit in a box - if I can remember which way round they go - still I am learning slowly!) I started by rounded out the edges and laying out my trees. Some had bases I'd bought and the rest I just make some stumps from a bit of plastic tube and putty. Then added a few odds and sods - bit of filler and the like for some small bumps and the odd skull and gave them a good prime with some rattle cans.

Out with the flocks and much layering of static grass and foams. I've mentioned in the past that I've slightly gone off "standard flock" since it fades so quickly. My new technique (and I will probably go back over some old pieces) is 2mm static grass as the "generic base". Hopefully this won't yellow out so quickly. How easy it will be to redo old pieces I don't know. Time will tell. Anyhow much diluted PVC later and the trees were super glued into their stumps. I'd pondered about making removable sections, but for these I just felt like "going for it" so they are solid one piece woods. A bit of putty to tidy up the trunks and a dab of paint, a few additional tufts (and flowers) and I'm calling them done.

Still probably about the same again in deciduous woods to do and a lot of conifers to get used at some point. So on with some photos! Bit hard to photograph background wise, but we'll start with a few group shots:

So managed to just about put a proper background in these shots, to keep it a bit GW there is a pile of bones in the middle of the woods!

We've a scenic little path through the woods here

I added some statues to these woods for a bit of interest.

Not quite sure if the forest bug is still with me to do some more, or if I'll leave it for a bit. A couple more large woods and a few single and two tree ones I think should finish it out nicely.

Very nice! Lovely variety in colours and sizes of trees to make the forest look interesting. And what kind of fantasy forest wouldn't have either some statues or standing stones hidden in them to perform all those rituals?

Great stuff, classic trees.
I started with more realistic trees, but also felt the lure of the bog brush.
They are after all, cheaper, quicker, easier, ready to go, iconic... etc..

I like the bases too, some nicely done touches.
Nicely nicely.

How will you deal with troops in the woods?

I was thinking I'd do either as I did when young and just use one one mini from the regiment to represent the troops, or just use some paper templates and swap out the wood if anyone was moving through it. Given I game so infrequently I decided I'd go for form over function with these.

They are looking superb. The K&M bog brush style tree might look simplistic on their own but put together on a nicely scenic’d base and the effect is surprisingly realistic looking. Of course, I believe ‘tis compulsory to let one’s inner Bob Ross out when assembling such a copse - “We’re going to put a happy little tree right here, pssshhhtttt…and that happy little tree needs a happy little friend and we’ll put him right over there, pssshhhtttt…and perhaps over there lives a little critter…and perhaps that little critter has a little chaos mutation…happy little tentacles” etc etc.

I keep saying.. This Yanky Bob Ross is over rated.. sure he was popular but only seamed to have really peaked a few years back.. long after his death..

Tony Hart! Always Tony Hart! Oh with Neil Buchanan as a second option. Both fantastic artists who had such a range and soo underrated these days.

I can't stop looking at this. OMG.
Thank you! I'm still rather chuffed with it. Although I did knock the wretched cross of the chapel again last week when moving it, but hey ho - maybe the powers of Chaos desecrated it or something, at least until I get round to gluing it back. I must have a bash at the other bits of graveyard at some point (although at present we're working on the 1:1 scale stuff to add to our annual Halloween efforts). It'd be nice to use those bits up and reduce the Tabletop World resin pile a bit (at least now they have switched to 3D printing I'm less keen so have managed to kick the habit!)

I know odd isn't it. I have a fair number of pricey "realistic trees" for another board and a load of armatures I was going (and may yet) to use to make some trees like those Luke did which I still think are some of the nicest trees I've seen. However for now my needs are met!

Totally - it was good fun just doing a layout that felt right and adding bits, taking them away and so forth. One of the most fun bits was actually doing the stumps. I've now finished up the remaining woodland pieces so will try to get some photos posted. Also for once I actually have a box to store them in and they fit! (mostly/just).
