New goodies! If I'm doing a harbor, I need harbor stuff. That's why I included this canal barge by Sarissa Precision.

Following my traditions, I thought of making the interior detailed, but this time it really made no sense, you cannot attach a single mini inside of the cabin

Of course the kit is designed to look Victorian, so I had to add some stuff to warhammerize it a little. Not too much, just small bits here and there:

So it finally looked like this:

I used the Kev Adams mini as the captain. The coat and the wool hat drove me that way

So he's the man for the ship!

I should have a look for an industrial crane, it's just the stuff the port is missing. For the moment I've just seen the gorgeous Ichabod by Fenris Games, but I fear it may be too big for my humble board. Do you happen to know of any other kit suitable for my purposes?

I've often found that O-scale stuff works well for 28mm. On paper it's much too big, but in practice, because 28mm is so exaggerated, especially in breadth/bulk, you almost need O-scale to be believable.

The Duncan Models cranes range from £4 to £18. The less expensive ones are intended for wall mount, but a basic free standing model seems to start at £6 and for £12 you also get a dock. Not too bad if you asked me. Don't know how big they are, but they're reportedly 7mm to one foot, which should translate to plenty big enough to look good in 40K, even given broad-shouldered gaming models. If the prices are scaring you (and I don't blame you) look more at that last link and less at the rest. I'll look around some more and see if I can find some cheaper sources. (Wouldn't mind more bits and bobs myself.)

I have made some additions to the barge, as I got some interesting feedback that had real potential. I was suggested to add some cherubs; I don't have any WH cherubs, but I remembered that I got this from the Imperial Chapel kit:

On the othe hand, I was also reminded that life in the Imperium is hard. A guy who lives wandering all over the rivers and canals, from hive to hive and to the outlanders domains, for sure must have a little bit more firepower than a single gun:

So with these two simple additions, the barge now has a little more personality :

I still have some more Sarissa Precision stuff A warehouse this time:

I didn't want all the table to look extremely dark and rusty; I mean, didn't want to take all to the extreme. That's why I went on light colours this time, to give some variety. Of course it couldn't look bright and clean, I had to find the balance...

I thought of working on the inside, but I still don't have enough crates & stuff, so for the moment I'll be using it just as a box for storage purposes (well, in fact that's what a warehouse is supposed to be ). After handrails and ladders were properly weathered, this is the final result:

Haha, for the moment I just have another kit. I've used this Helipad to build an Arbites Station:

I painted the Arbites shield, but used a decal for the fist. 'That will save me time; besides, it will look much better; blah blah blah'. The fact is that the decal totally flaked off so I finally had to paint it again. All for nothing!

The sign was quite easy (maybe too simple? )

It happened to be perfect for my Arbites Arvus!

After all these buildings I think it was definitely time for some places to live in! All those citizens need a home, after all! I think I have a thing for these real estate issues...

The kit is provided with just one floor, but it's modular, so I got another one. You can get as many as you want, but for the moment I'm OK with these:

But at this point I lost control . I really thought that, if I was to build an apartment building, I was going to need some furniture and stuff! Shamefully I lack the patience to wait for another purchase (though I admit there are some pretty cool items out there that I may use in the future). By now I have enough MDF bits to buils my own Ork fortress , so I thought I could use some of them .

These are going to be shower heads:

Some beds (maybe too small, but these are only to give the impression of a bed...)

Just to end losing my mind, I'm sure you'll agree these are mere houses, but not cozy homes. What would make the difference? What do actual people have at their homes? Pics of your beloved ones!

OK, dollhouse finished! I've finally found a solution. Not perfect indeed, but well, the chunky aspect is part of its charm . Our tenants will have a shower of their own, but it will also be used as latrine (they may want to use a grid over the hole when using the shower... ?). Using more MDF bits I made some TVs and shelves:

Central rooms will be the common areas. First floor will have a couple of microwave ovens (or whatever they use in 40K):

You can spot a classic quis custodiet ipsos custodes?, not much explanation needed. The Lux Mundi was a funny idea that came to mind as I was painting the very letters. They are considered a subversive heretic cult accountable for several recent riots. The word is that they even have attracted attention from a misterious Outworlder who has recently come with a bunch of lookalike thugs...
Bottom left you can see... a Golden Throne and well, several other stuff all over the wall. Some experiments for future grafitti

Truly enjoyable, but if I've ever want to see this board finished, I must begin to build regular buildings with no inside performance, I cannot afford a dollhouses city!

After loong debate with myself, having received some really interesting suggestions, I finally opted to purchase this crane:

The issue was the scale. I was OK with the structure, but the cabin was quite problematic. I enlarged it a little using the first piece of card I found:

I thought a Servitor was the most logical option to man the crane. I found an old 1/48 plane pilot; with the severed GW head, it could work...

The crane itself looked neat to me:

For the inside, there was no point in sculpting it all over; I used the oldest trick in the movies, just painted card!

Well, it works! You are not supposed to pay attention to it!

So after some more work, it finally got this aspect:

It's totally enough for my standards, it fits in perfectly in my board:
