twisted moon's 2025

for some reason.. I'm thinking of some film where one of them bases would fit in a toilet.. damn probably some crap 80s rubbish... whatever it was, that's the first thing that comes to mind.

Look nice, must be pretty strong to live in swamp

finally a return to sci-fi projects.
many years ago, before i had many sci-fi miniatures, two hour wargames chain reaction went on sale at a price i couldn't resist having read a fair few battle reports.
i bought a packet of glow in the dark toy spiders to use as the game controlled opposition force.
chain reaction wasn't really for me (although i should give it another go), but i still have the spiders.

the spiders are as they came, my work here is all in the bases.
they have a significant leg-span and so required 60mm diameter bases. i had a couple, but only a couple of mdf bases in that size.
rather than buy more, i decided to make a couple of masters using various bits of junk i've collected and have lying around, and use these to make hot glue press molds (having seen that in a few youtube videos and discord channels), and then cast the bases with milliput.
the molding process ripped most of the junk off the mdf bases, so if i want more i'll be making different ones. the hot glue is not very supple (i perhaps laid it on too thick) so i'm using talcum powder as a release agent.
obviously i've painted and washed them, then attached the spider super glue. as you can see, it's gone a bit gloopy, i presume that's because it's very hot at the moment. i may paint over it once it has fully cured.
i'm calling these beasts vacuum spiders, and they'll play the role of any space bugs i may require, including genestealers.

yeah, even for a temp, Hot glue isn't fantastic for making the mould, okay (in some cases) for casting. If you can't get some decent silicon, you want something which has a bit of give to it which'll allow you to take the stuff out of the mould.
still if came out that well, that's fine ^_^

Very cool, I always like seeing toys used, as err, well toys I suppose if I'm harsh about our hobby! :)

^Some people are silly about their seriousness. I prefer to be serious about my silliness. It's a game. With toys. For fun. :) Toys for the toy god!

And the spiders look like they'd make fun monsters in a sci-fi bug hunt sort of scenario. Not familiar with chain reaction, but I'd think they ought to be pretty useful in other games too. No reason you couldn't play Space Hulk with them if you wanted. Or Aliens. And hey, the glow in the dark could make for some great atmospheric photography.

it seems to have functioned.

definitely toys.

i think they'll do the job.

Have you tried Oyumaru?
yes, i use oyumaru, but didn't have enough to mold these bases.

here's a second batch.

Vacuum spiders2.jpg

i may make some more (i have plenty of spiders left), but if so will change the base design.

i decided it was time to paint the midlam miniatures stalagbites that have been sitting around for a few years.

Stalagbites1a.jpg

i decided i'd paint them in my sci-fi stone scheme.

Stalagbites1b.jpg

i liked it so much i revisited the other pack i'd painted grey even more years ago.

Stalagbites4a.jpg

as you can see the photo. hasn't come out so well.

Stalagbites4b.jpg

this first batch must have been painted before 2017, as a search on here didn't bring up the original paint job.
i expect these will see more use as scenery than protagonists, but they may become animated on a death world now and again.

nice.. still haven't got around to trying out the board game. Only have some of the mini's painted up. Also nice it was one of these 'cheap' ish things so you got wood tokens but could get the metal mini upgrades. Not saying every company should do that but if you want to keep core price lower and okay for non-mini people, that's a good thing and making an upgrade pack
