The different brands and manufacturers don't stand out, it even adds to the chaotic and ramshackle image of the ratlings.
my general approach is to use figures from all over the place. i think it's a consequence of all those adverts for other manufacturers in white dwarf from the '80's.
i agree it works better with less disciplined horde armies.
Really like the almost monochrome palette you've used works really well with skaven.
thank you. since they spend most of their time scurrying around tunnels and sewers, it makes sense to me that their fashion wouldn't be overly colourful.
heres another batch. the start of a new unit.
the standard bearer and musician are metal (i suspect you already knew), i think the former may be from one of the iterations of the screaming bell, but i picked him up from ebay a while ago. he has a tendency to topple forwards, which i'll try and address when making the unit base. the musician ranked up before i added shields. i'll have to try and take that into consideration when i make the next batch.
the others are plastics, mostly plague monks again. i've chopped them up a bit to put the staves in their right hands.
the left most has a warhammer regiments head and sword blade as a spear head, the middle one has a grenadier plastic orc spearhead, the rightmost a kallistra (metal) head and plague monk sword blade as spear head.
i think the plan is to make twenty of these, and then swap them out for figures in other units that will make more suitable black rats, possibly with halberds. this musician may end up in that unit, which would give me some different considerations when considering how to rank him up.
