The Oldhammer Blog.

Indio Anjones and the Barrow of Doom is inbound - shall I hold off publishing for a few days to spread out the posts?

I agree, it could do with a bit of a new face. A bit of bright new lippy always gets Chico noticed. I always liked the Ravening hordes cover.

No, content is king. Anyway, I want to read it! We should install the gadget that recommends other posts too. It will help each article link into another.

Its technically a relaunch, so I feel it should 'look different' even if the 'look' is short term.

Perhaps we should go the whole hog and just fill it with loads of pictures and charge people £7.50 to look at it too! ;)

Good stuff! Duly "followed".

If there is going to be a change to its appearance, can I make a suggestion that the background for the text of articles is either plain (sitting on top of the background image), or a fairly heavy screen with a low transparency obscuring the background image. This would make it a lot easier to read, I think.

EDIT - by way of example, Orlygg's own blog (http://realmofchaos80s.blogspot.co.uk/, for ease of reference - you've all been there already!)

Hi Erny, all

If nothing else, I think the site is in dire need of a revamp - the stark white text on the textured black is brutal on the eyes.

In terms of content, I think you could look at the content on this forum that doesn't seem to be attached to blogs - there are many painters who do some fantastic work (easy, continuous feeds too) on this forum that don't have blogs - this seems like some pretty low hanging fruit without reinventing the wheel.

Personally, I could also see a value in summarising the discussions on facebook; I don't find facebook a very intuitive platform for discussions and I suspect I'm not alone. I'd rather read that stuff on a blog if possible.

This is already happening. There are some brilliant things happening outside of the blogosphere and forum that just don't get seen. We Erny going the gaming, and myself the modelling and painting, that has got a lot of bases covered already. Personally, I would like to see some of Padre's brilliant campaigns get the blogging treatment!

OK fair enough, clearly I'm way off the mark design wise.

If I o for a picture background which one should I use?

I quite like the design as it is to be fair, don't buckle to peer pressure! You'll end smoking and taking drugs and drinking.. Oh wait maybe peer pressure is good :O

I don't think you are. A tiled background image off the cover of a book isn't what I'd call aesthetically pleasing to the eye. I like the stylized background better than the background on all the blogs using book covers straight up. It just looks weird and busy.

That said, I'd prefer a light background with black text in the actual blog post panels - and I think the page should have a proper graphical header to add some colour. How about using Zhu's design(s)? I like them quite a bit, people are wearing the tshirts and it's more relevant than any particular Warhammer edition cover. I'd suggest this, if Zhu's OK with loaning it to the blog:

I am some pages late to the discussion, and don't really have much blog experience, but I wanted to say I appreciate the efforts that you bloggers go to in creating them. I had not actually been aware of the Oldhammer blog, and think that links-with-extra-commentary is a good idea for posts (although I am not saying that should be all that's on there). So I've bookmarked it and look forward to staying updated.

I wasn't very clear in my post before. I meant that if there is going to be a background image, I think a plain background for the text would be easier to read. My absolute preference would be as Phreedh suggests - a strong, clear image/logo as a header, and then no clutter to distract from the pictures of miniatures and games. Still, "content is king" and that's looking pretty fine already 8-)

Just my 2p.

I quite liked the old background although I agree a change is in order with the "relaunch".

The black and white is a bit stark on the eyes too.

Does anyone remember the short-lived fad of creating an 80's style fanzine with the details of your blog - I think Zhu probably had a hand in it?
This was my effort -

How about changing the background each month for a new front cover one of us has made? Mind you might be a bit busy...

It'd be good to see the Oldhammer logo as a header like Phreedh suggests.

Oh and the Indio Anjones scenario is up now

Thanks again to Knobgobbler (does he still post any Oldhammer stuff anywhere) for the brilliant illustrations!

I think it was Coop who started the Your Blog is a Zine thing.

Meanwhile, yeah, we can use the Realms ov Khaos Oldhammer logo thing for that blog. Be happy to give the thing an entire design overhaul.

Zhu if you're up for doing a face lift I'm happy to give you admin rights to get it done if that would be easiest.

I've put a roundup of the months gaming posts on the blog, went for a months worth due to there being less gaming material than painting and modeling. Also I've not included the obvious link to Padre's reports this time as I thought I'd do an entire post for his epics.

I'm happy to contribute stuff to this but I have no idea what, so I'm open to suggestions. Anything needed of a collecting nature?

How about some myth busting articles about highly collectible miniatures? How much they really should go for etc rather than the overpriced BINs and bidding war malarky stuff?

Love that idea.
