The Oldhammer Blog.

Good point to Orlygg, the blog is the gateway drug.

It needs to have the very cream of the week on it, we need to trust the judgment of those posting and that they are widely enough read.

Were you imagining any 'criteria' that material would need to fit to be included? One man's cream could be another man's custard.

You have to think about the Oldhammer blog being a gateway INTO the scene rather than something central. The FB page and the forum are the centre of it all, I don't think Erny is suggesting that the old Oldhammer blog is going to be for this purpose. I am talking about jazzing up its content and creating something more useful to potential converts rather than informing the old guard.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear on this one, it's excatly what I meant, a gateway, it should send to interesting original blogposts, forum threads and FB posts. I t can also be a round-up of known facts on a special subject. I wholeheartedly agree the real thing will keep happening here and on blogs and FB. Just the cream as you guys said
I just wouldn't like it to be a place for self promotion.

regarding Erny's propositions (just my 2 cents)
1) seems a VERY heavy task to say the least
2) looks like a path to failure
3) looks like the best way imho, people who talk about something they know and advertise for useful/intersting links, articles.
4) looks more like a job than fun, cooperative blogs working this way seem soulless to me.

Agree with this strongly.

I think there should be static content that is relatively unchanging such as the links, facebook, blogroll etc.

I think there should be a (low admin maintenance) feed of "community favorites" to give low latency up to the minute hobby stuff.

Difficult one, how do you define a good post?

Thing is I believe I could trust your judgement on that, as I would most regular posters on this forum.

All very good points.

The blog as ever will be about the oldhammer community, what are they up to, where are the best posts.

As to posting again I'll happily give access to others if they have a track record for good stuff or if new are very enthusiastic and persuasive but there probably needs to be a limit.

Four possible options (there are other options I'm sure):

Myself or someone else does all the work and sees if the thing is interesting enough to keep going.

The disorganised chaos way, open the blog up to those who care and leave them to it.

The structured way, someone takes responsibility for an aspect of the community, miniatures, painting, 40K, Fantasy whatever and posts regularly every week or so giving the best of each subject.

The very structured way, seven active authors seven days, post up your favorite thing of the week on your day.

Another option is Erny being the main author but with a series of guest authors - maybe organised via the forum on a volunteer basis. Each has a week or 2 to run the blog and post what they wish. This way ensure the widest variety of content/interests.

Missed this post, worth considering...

Well the number of comments and general response (easily seen on blogs, FB posts or forum posts) are a good hints.
Good photos of finished models and understandable english are the only real criterias. Once again, you don't need to please everyone every time. If there is a "best orcs of the week" post or things of the sort, you will obviously disppoint people disliking orcs but as long as the topics change and that what's displayed is relevant I think there is no big issue here.

As th eblog is on blogspot, people can write the drafts and leave to Erny/other historical writers the right to post them. Or we can either have an "article proposition" thread here...

Thats about as much commitment as writing the thing Asslessman.

I could probably run to a monthly or fortnightly best of fantasy post. If someone were to volunteer to do a 40K, a modeling, a painting, a battle rep and a general cool projects post we probably have everything covered. With between five to ten posts a month the blog would stay reasonably up to date, look good and be the gateway as proposed.

Not necessarily as much, the idea would be to leave you just to push "publish". Articles from trusted posters wouldn't be an issue and some others owould require more attention. I'm not saying it is the best way, just proposing ideas really.

Cool I think that's the way we should go then. I don't even need to update you as an author.

Any more volunteers?

Oh and I'll set some time aside to work on updating the links.

I'm willing to offer my contribution once in a while to "trends" articles and to round-ups. I think people fresh to the community can use some round-ups to be directed to the right sources we all know as obvious

Great Idea Assless, I can't remember are you an author already?

Thantsants suggested on the blog itself having people volunteer to write an article now and then. Perhaps that would be a useful idea for people with as yet unnoticed blogs to reach out and grab our attention? We could do it the way you proposed Assless and have them post us the article to publish.

I realise this is something on top of our already simple idea so it may be getting to complicated already...

I realize that I am a little late to the conversation here...but when has that ever stopped me... ;)

For low maintenance and high referral rate to other dedicated Oldhammer blogs I would suggest we follow the example of "Blogs of War" (http://wargamesblogs.blogspot.com/) Which is really just a beefed up Blog Roll. Ours of course would be only Oldhammer related and someone would have to add the new blogs to the list but they update automatically when new posts are made. I get a fair number of referrals from this site and something similar with an Oldhammer focus will only help to drive more traffic to our individual blogs ...and it could also be used to announce larger events Like the Oldhammer Weekend etc.

Anyway...if we go the other route I could be convinced to do a couple of more general blog post over the course of the year....perhaps including somethings that we talked about for the Fanzine that never got off the ground...like an exploration of some of the New Figure ranges that have an Oldhammer flavor to them.

Anyway...that my $.02....and probably over valued at that...

Cheers,

Blue

Good ideas from everyone so far.

In fact, why not rename the blog as the Oldhammer Fanzine?

I've still got that scenario and the marvellous illustrations Knobgobbler drew for us many moons ago for the first edition that could do with seeing the light of data some point.

If we could get some talented person to do us some little Oldhammer filler illustrations they could be used to give a coherent feel to the various articles being written for it.

A very good idea that mate. Yes the Oldhammer Fanzine sounds much better and gives the new visitor a good idea what its all about. Oh, and I have contributed my article for the week too. Couldn't resist including your latest lovely orcs!

I just had a go at porting a previous blog post (the stripping metal minis with dettol one, its seemed most appropriate to someone new to the scene) and it took about four minutes, and that included re-editing the draft to make it fit in with the purpose of the site. So moving choice articles shouldn't be a chore at all.

Oh, and I've whipped up my followers to join, both from FB and my blog. I suggest we all do the same!

Nice one Orlygg. This has already covered a few posts that I imagined doing for the fantasy round up so I've decided to change tac. I'll do the other side of things and do a round up of gaming oldhammer on the web each update.

Blue your idea of a glorified blog roll is very good too, perhaps we could have the best most exhaustive oldhammer side bar of blogs running, who volunteers to come up with the list? New miniature reviews would be good, with an updated manufacturers list.

Thantsants fanzine style articles would be awesome, feel free to start the ball rolling however you think best.

Assless, trends in Oldhammer huh? Go for it, our resident oldhammer trend spotter.

Thanks for engaging with this so positively guys, it seamed a shame to let sit there an out of date dead end.

Erny, how about a facelift to suit the new makeover? Just changing the background would be a great start wouldn't it? Second/third edition cover art would be a good place to start until we decide on something more permanent. I change in background says 'notice me' I feel!

I kinda like the background, it is the third ed cover. I can be persuaded though, maybe if a very talented member of the community wanted to contribute in that way?
