The Age of Strife

Been quickly trying to bash out the carts, they should be done soon - nothing special - in fact probably not much better than they arrived, but they'll be done.

Otherwise it's back to the old necromunda gang with just a short, err 30 odd year hiatus in painting my gang. I have 3 painted, 1 pretty much painted (although hopefully I can find his backpack) and one started from back then. Then this lot that I re-primed the other day and have just started working on their green suits.

I did debate if I should try to paint the "new" lot like the old lot, but figured I find it hard enough to get anything painted at the best of times so I should just paint them and be damned! So hopefully they'll come together okay. So far it's only actually the Juve I've highlighted. The others look that way because they have been shaded, but the camera is doing a lot of the heavy lifting for them!

Also slowly doing the base work on my Imperial fists, but I don't intend to finish them for a little while - just getting the base colours down and I'll come back to them at some point, but it's nice to have something else on the go so to speak.

Right going to call the suits done now. Which of course means I've just realised I need to do the arm on the Heavy Plasma gun. Still at least I spotted that now.

van-saar-wip.jpg

Yes one of those is not a Van-Saar, but I always used him with my gang so on with the green. They are much brighter than the old ones, which I'll have to dig out for a side by side for some jarring. Still it's Oldhammer gaming, who's going to complain! :)

He might as well be, given the overlapping capabilities of Van-Saar & tech gangs. I think he fits.

I played Van-Saar (with 40K proxy models) in our one & only Necromunda campaign. The mechanics being so similar to 2nd was a boon. I think I spent most games trying to rescue my heavy after he was captured. Possibly more than once. I had the idea I should up-gun the leader with the best gun he could get and give my heavy a bolter. This tactic did not work.

I don't quite remember how I played back in the day or how well my gang actually did. I dare say the campaign sheets exist somewhere. It's been interesting re-reading the rules and I am looking forward to my first game at some point. To the extent that I am wondering about painting the Escher gang I have after this rather than some other stuff I had half in mind to move onto.

Anyhow cool enough here to actually do some painting this evening so here is the current state of the gang. Starting to come together now I think. I was quite pleased with the flesh on this lot, I am not good at painting faces in general. However this lot I think came out quite well. Anyhow it's onto all the fiddly little detailing now. Well I'll probably finish highlighting the black first actually, and the guns need a wash of course.

You'll note the assassin in that picture (and a servitor in the background I've not really started). I do have a few other models that I need to tidy up. So as perhaps mentioned I have three of my gang painted from childhood. In addition I have two that are mostly painted. I also have another adventurer/inquisitor type mini I started as a kid that I'm doing. So far all I've added so far to my old efforts is his skin, but I've got stuck. His "sword" is just well wonderfully odd. It's a big round pole:

So I'm soliciting for thoughts on well how to paint it and what colour to paint it! Is it perhaps nominally supposed to be a "laser sword" (don't want those Lucas/Disney lawyers getting upset) ?

Ideas please!

Speaking of ideas, thoughts on basing ... so my old gang are on plain round 25mm bases painted a lovely green/grey slate colour. Nothing more than that. I'll never replicate the colour and will probably look to base everything on hexes anyway, since I have somewhat adopted that as "my thing" ;) So thoughts - plain paint? Just do a very light sand texture and do them a darkish grey or something? My terrain I've painted up is a dark blue/grey colour. Not fussed about exactly matching that. Should I try to be clever and paint on some "texture", should I try to actually add some real texture such as a diamond tread using plasticard. Something like that would have been easier if I'd pinned the models. I'm not going to do that now - I'll just knacker my painting. Anyhow thoughts and suggestions much appreciated.

god, that reminds me of a couple of figures I really wanna make... mmm.. Don't think I'm good enough, mostly cause I'm not sure how the hell to do the faces.. but it's an old laser sword (Lucas wasn't the first to use them.. though became more popular due to him ripping off old samurai films but wanting them more 'sci-fi'..

Personally? looks like there is no real handle, so.. what about like some idiots you see at football matches and you stick a tacky flag on the end? ^_^

I went with making it a baton or truncheon. I painted it as wood, since that's what it looks like to me. He's a fun, and suggestive old miniature.

100% a “laser sword”! Paint it up as such and have fun with some OSL? 🤔

Basing wise I would go for some industrial grilling, but up to you (so long as not Goblin Green!! 🤣).

Basing wise I would go for some industrial grilling,
How though? - given the tabbed bases is my woe, granted I am making my own problem - clip them and pin - sorted, but I'm not keen on clipping these now I've painted them. Should I just try painting an effect?

but up to you (so long as not Goblin Green!! 🤣).
I did think- I wonder how GW did it - arrr Goblin Green ...

I think I shall perhaps try a laser/power type colouring. Bought some fluro blue paint today so will try that - although so far not impressed with how bright it is, still hey ho!

Textured card or plastic? I cut up some binding tape that could pass as grills. You can cut around the tabs. I do that with all my card paving bases.

Had some modelling the base for this cyber-mastiff:

Cheers, I'll see what I can find along those lines - should be easier to get around the tabs/feet than stiff plasticard I guess. Thanks for the tip. Just about finished them up tonight. Really just eyes I think to screw up and they are done!

Found some grip tape, which looked like a decent pattern. It is rubberised so we'll have to see how well the paint stays on it, hoping a varnish will help. I managed to mostly cut it around the feet, and it looks mostly okay (little iffy and raised over the tab on some). Certainly good enough that I shall leave it like that for now. I've still to finish up the detailing on the models, but thought since the tape had arrived it'd be nice to base up the old (couple there at the back) and the new ones.

So nearly got a finished gang...

I was about to say I've managed to get paint to stick to ruberized electrical tape just fine after a light sand and prime, so I expect it'll work fine. Those do make a quite nice floor plate!

Not that I'll do more than strip them for now, but some Dwarf bits arrived in the post today. The cannon is missing its axel plate, but a bit of styrene and some green stuff for the bearings should do nicely. Not sure when I'll tackle my tiny (no pun) collection of Dwarfs, but I thought a cannon is a useful thing whatever!

Might do a bit more of the base work on my Marines next. I'm not quite sure I feel like properly doing them, but getting all the basics in place is very low effort painting. After that I'm wondering about finally trying to tackle my Black Orcs...
