Man that dread is nice! The kind of thing I always wanted to do but could never pull off. You're doing it right by just rebasing and leaving the rest.

I agree.
Just have to find some time to do it.

Excellent conversions, now get some paint on them ;)

Cheers!
Soon, mate.
Soon....

Great concept, and some lovely conversion work. Particularly impressed with the samurai armour effect on one of the warriors. Will be great to see them painted.

I wonder if you have any references or guidance for the hair sculpting, especially as done on the Melnibonean warrior? I'm just taking my first baby steps in sculpting for some hobgoblin conversions I'm doing, and the hair is proving a bit daunting at the moment :(

Paul / Grumdril

The 'samurai' thing is pretty easy to do: Just get your basic shape of the armour done and them add a very thin layer of green stuff and make some marks with a scalpel, first horizontally and then vertically, in the intended pattern.

As for hair: Just get a basic shape in plce first, smaller tha the intended finished result and add the detail layer afterwards, about 1-2mm deep and drag the 'hair' design into it.
Scibor has some great tutorials on his site:

http://sciborminiatures.com/en_,sculpting.php

...the only thing that I can say is that practice is always the key.
To be honest, once you have done it a few times, hair/fur becomes really easy.
Getting something that has a definitve shape is harder, but it, like everything, practice makes things easier every time.

With hair, when it comes to detailing: Start at the bottom and work upwards.
It will all make sense when you try it.

My RT 'Gangs'....Iron Claw Space Pirates (WIP) 23/04

Steering away from the Eldar for a while now as it is time for something more pressing.

I urgently need a new Necromunda gang as we have started a new campaign.
I am using my Squats as proxies at the moment....(maybe I should take some pics of them soon too... ;)) and have been itching to paint my Iron Claw Space Pirates ever since I managed to snaffle up the last one I needed to complete the set.
That was some three years ago and they have been nagging at me ever since.....

So, to kill two birds with one stone, the Pirates shall be my new 'Munda gang.

I reckon they will work just fine as denizens of the Underhive, bearing in mind how ugly some of them are.
(In the nicest possible way, of course).

I dug them out earlier, based and undercoated them, and attacked them with the brush.
Three hours later I am very happy with the progress....

About halfway there, I reckon.
It has been a long time since I painted a sizable number of figures (years since I did anything like this many at once) and I am really surprised how much I enjoyed it.
Maybe I have my mojo back.

There are seventeen Pirates another two Olley sculpts in the Imperial Psyker and Servitor (which will become a Pit Slave) and an early RT Inquisitor who works just fine as my leader, Mr Biffta.

I hope to get them finished before the next game.
Fingers crossed.
::)

Re: My RT 'Gangs' Iron Claw Space Pirates (WIP) 23/04

Excellent work here Mason ! Having just painte dthe Iron claw aliens myself, I know these are a treat to paint an dyour way of using washes is a brilliant one as those finely detailed models (more like insanely detailed) are perfect for that.
I really fancy the grim and desaturated look of them, really suits them.

Re: My RT 'Gangs' Iron Claw Space Pirates (WIP) 23/04

Thank you, sir.

The washes are a good option for these for two reasons.
Firstly: I am aiming for a more dark and dirty look for them befitting creatures of the Underhaive, as well as spaceport scum in a more general setting.

Secondly: It is a lot quicker and I hope to get them done as soon as possible so that I can use them next week.

Re: My RT 'Gangs' Ratskin Sculpt (WIP) 27/04

All this recent talk of 'Munda, and even getting a couple of games in, has given my mojo a real lift, to the point where I would like to add a few more things to my own collection.
I have even started to create a few of my own.
(I should be doing something else, but you know how it is..... ::)).

I have begun with my own version of a Ratskin Scout.

Still WIP, but getting there...

I am trying to keep the figure a little more generic compared to a GW Ratskin as, although they do have a certain characterful feel to them, some of them seem a little dwarfed by their ratty cloaks.
I am hoping this one will fit in with my IC Space Pirates.

I have also started on a Scaly, but that is still a way down the line yet...

Re: My RT 'Gangs' Ratskin Scout sculpt (WIP) 27/04

Well that's an appetizing ! I really like the pose so far. Did you build on instinct or had you planned something ?

Re: My RT 'Gangs' Ratskin Scout sculpt (WIP) 27/04

Your ratskin looks great! Did you use a commercially available dolly, or wire dolly plus the head?

I understand adding brownstuff or milliput to the mix can help with getting sharper edges.

I just picked one of my armless 'dollies' and went from there, making it up as I go.
That is pretty much how I make all of my figures.

I used my own home-made wire dolly.
I have a stack of 'naked' figures built over them that I make at work during my breaks.
I just picked one that I wanted to work from and took it from there.

I know, but I prefer working with pure green stuff as I am used to that now.
Any suggestions for getting sharper eyesight?
;)

The Scaly...

Still WIP, but I am happy with how it is coming along.

Re: Scaly sculpt (WIP) 30/04

Cool more along the lines of the 2004 scaly then the 1996 one, how does he scale (Bad pun) to them?

He is about 40mm tall.
Once he is finished properly I will stand him alongside some familiar miniatures for all to check out his dimensions.
;)

Ratskin Scout sculpt finished 30/04

Well, it has taken a while to find time to take a piccie or two but I have finally gotten some proof that the Scout sculpt is finished...

I shall be using him as a Ratskin Scout, but I can see him being useful in a number of genres, Post-Apoc in particular.

Re: Ratskin Scout sculpt finished 11/05

Looking good mate, looking to him cast up for yourself? and maybe a few spare for umm trading?
