Playing a Role

Read, but not played Enemy Within.
Doomstones sounded a little too “questy” to me, not quite in keeping with the low level fantasy of the setting.
Hadn’t heard of A Private War, sounds interesting if you could manage the GMing!?

If I remember correctly I read somewhere it was going to be D&D before ending up as WFRP. To be fair the end of The Enemy Within suffers from much the same, Empire in Flames has been re-written by fans a few times (and was going to be rewritten by Hogshead when they had the licence). And whilst I enjoyed Something Rotten in Kislev I always felt needed a re-write. Still the first bits of The Enemy Within are pure WFRP. Somewhere I have my mostly done rewrites of both those parts of the story, I can't remember if I finished them or not, probably not!

probably skimmed some in WD at some point but nothing I can remember, and haven't even fully read the rule book scenario ^_^ so none at all.

That tallies with what I have read about the Doomstones campaign too.

Suppose it's probably too late to get in on a game like this, but have fun and let the forum know how it goes :) I ran up to the end of Shadows Over Bogenhafen with my gaming group in my final year at uni and it was an absolute blast, though some parts of WFRP1 were a bit messy for me. I've got the gang back together to continue that campaign, playing through Death on the Reik in my own game system, "Zorn: The Wrath of God" which will see publication after I can pay someone to do the layout for me. Takes a page out of Old School Renaissance d&d-based systems, applying that philosophy to Warhammer, and we've only played one session but I think it's working quite well.

There's so much fantastic material in Warpstone... bet that whatever gets picked out, you'll have a hell of a time!

Pardon me if this has been mentioned here already as I very much might have simply missed it, but I wanted to mention that a PDF of the 1st Edition rules can be purchased on DriveThruRPG. I haven't looked, but I imagine a physical book from back in the day on eBay might cost a soul or two. Sadly no print on demand, but that might be too much to ask for with these old books. Spiral bound it is, I suppose!

Somewhat on the topic - I'm currently reading through the rules to get at least some handle on how this and that works and am loving them. Quite a lot more in-depth than what I'm used to, so it's a new but very welcome mode of operation for me. Think I got the hang of character creation and am now mostly reading up on other procedures that a player might be expected to at least know where to look up.

not sure if that's an official release or a 'we scanned it and sell it'.. I'm not too sure on some things on DriveThruRPG.. Might be fine, or might not.. kinda not sure..

Cubicle 7, so it says. They's the ones what got the rights to Warhammer Fantasy these days, yeah? Someone can correct me, but I do doubt Games Workshop would let it fly if someone tried to make bank off their property! Or at least so I'd expect from the bunch.

Ah, fair enough then ^_^

erm.. I wouldn't too.. unsure about not letting people make money off their property.. I mean, I think they are still hurting a bit after the last time they tried that... and kinda lost alot of IPs..

yes, cubicle7 have the current wfrp license. i didn't know about the first edition stuff (or i've forgotten), but do know they've been releasing a lot of the 2nd edition material as .pdf.
I suppose it would be useful to know if anyone has played (or worse I guess GM'd!) any of the major campaigns ...
i ran tew as it was initially released and played a heavily modified version of sob and pbtt about 15 years ago.
about 12 years ago, i ran a mash up of the first part of doomstones and the wheatlands, which ended when i moved house.

The one on DriveThru is a licensed release (every now and then the WFRP stuff comes up on sale via Humble or Bundle of Holding, etc). Second hand copies of WFRP1 tend to sell for the £20-40 ballpark, but you do periodically see them going for more like £10-20 from time to time when the auction is started at a lower number as I think it's probably only worth £30 at most. Very little difference between the original hardback, soft back (yellow cover text) or Hogshead (logo cover text) editions so any are fine.

Would it be preferable for us to have a first character ready prior to whenever we have our first sit-down, or do we want to spend some time rolling up the poor sods together?

I'm going to sort out each character with each player individually, going a bit slow partially because of work, partially because I'm "WFRP rusty" :) Actually kicking off with Manic's tomorrow. Anyhow hopefully that way as you say we'll avoid people sitting idle in the first game and it gives us a chance to rough out some background for characters, decide who might know who and how the party came together, etc.

We're using https://www.playrole.com as the platform to play on (essentially Zoom/Teams/etc + a dice roller and bits) so if you want to you can get signed up with an account there. You'll only need the free account.

Nearly all the characters rolled up, so will get them typed up on my character sheets which I will distribute. Obviously keep your own copies how you please. I'm very happy to send over the sheets I'm doing, or you can use the standard WFRP one or your own scribbles - whatever works. KingOfTheLeadPile mentioned he was generating some PDFs of the standard sheet if you wanted to use those.

Mine look like this FWIW

wfrp-character-sheet.png

Along with a second page with the skills written out in full and then a page for character history (we wanted a large page for that because my last game was intermittent so I'd update the history with notes from the last session so everyone was reminded where they were so to speak) and final page for career information/progression.
