Playing a Role

too late to the party, but i'd have just suggested discord.
Not to late to join the party! We've got:
  • ManicMan
  • King of the Lead Pile [Maybe]
  • Fimm McCool
  • Brother Meredith
  • Eric (GMing)
So I think @twisted moon we could add another player in if Manic is cool with the numbers - I shall defer to him as party leader!

The software is just web based so pretty platform agnostic. Seemed to work okay (Brother Meredith I'd met before and now I know the man behind the hedgehog!). I don't think we'll be using the "built in" adventure sheet type feature, but the other tools - media, maps, tokens, dice rolling (obviously), sound etc should all prove useful. The video and audio chat worked okay, players don't need to have a subscription or anything (just register an account) just the host needs that to enable the Audio/Video streaming.

Plan is to do WFRP 1st and I'm idling through my old Warpstone magazines to find a good scenario to get us going with that we can do in one or two sessions. After that we'll take stock and decide if we're going to embark on a campaign or something.

Cool. Well @twisted moon if you'd fancy a bit of perilous adventure we can arrange that.

I'll try to get my skates on and find us an adventure before too long then!

Once the adventure is sorted out, are we going to sort out Characters before the session.. I would have though so cause.. well, Lack of experience on character creation ^_^ not amazingly hard but just looking through the stages...

Would fancy giving this a peep depending on the time and day! I'm in the land of GMT+2 if that happens to align well enough. WHFRP 1E is the sort of game I'd like to play in between running my own game of D&D, but the very big Warhammer RPG discord is very decidedly set on 4E which seems like it might be a bit too leaned into the modern variety of RPG ruleset for my taste. I mean Hell, at the VERY least the artwork and presentation in 1E blows it outta the water in this grumbling dwarf's opinion.

I'd join up if that would be convenient for all!

Start the game as a vagrant, achieve the heady heights of ratcatcher, contract plague and die horribly. Anything else in WFRP is just a distraction from the day to day awfulness! THAT's what WFRP should be. :) Welcome aboard.

That's exactly the sort of game this 'ere beardling is looking for!

I shall endeavour to deliver something, although apologies in advance if my GMing is too rusty! I think I've probably got a suitable adventure to kick off with as ever when reading adventures I start to overthink, but as GMs we all want to avoid the classic Dork Tower situation ...

I guess I'll give people a shout individually and we'll get some characters rolled up next and take it from there.

^_^ never a big Tolkien fan as I believe his idea (well, his take on older ideas) don't quite live up to his execution but no real problems.. It's like how Lovecraft had a bit of a weakness for 1 dimensional characters who are pretty interchangeable (which kinda lead to a whole lot of stories with just a unnamed narrator).

Killing Gandalf would probably have dealt with soo many of the problems the crew faces..

Taking up the DM's reigns in the first place is worth a thank you on its own, so three cheers for that already! The rest is a bunch of people rolling some dice and having a good time. Ain't none of us Matt Mercer, I assume, so worry not about this or that hiccup while describing the size of a goblin's nose or the exact number of hit points (wounds, I suppose?) worth of damage an ogre does. It'll all be good times.

He's part of Critical Role a group of shiny young things that film themselves playing 5th edition D&D, I assume he probably does other stuff to earn a living as well! Not something I've watched, but seems to be part of the renaissance over the last decade for D&D where is became a little bit "trendy geek" and almost an acceptable hobby! :)

hit points (wounds, I suppose?)
Wounds indeed. Ain't no hit points or THAC0's around here thank you very much ;) although I did dabble in 2nd edition AD&D back in the day. We're keeping it pure with WFRP 1, where you roll your dice in mud and puppies have a better profile than starting characters. Okay I might have made up that last bit, but ...

trendy geek.. what they call hipsters.. so.. YUPPIES! BLOODY YUPPIES! some reason, I have an deep dislike of yuppies...

Oh and my book says about a basic ogre has... ugh.. been too long since I've had a decent game of WFB... lets try to remember... when working out the number of hits, damage is ((D6 + strength)-any deductions) - enemy Toughness... I think.. Okay, I'm gonna have to skim over some bits in the rule book..

Critical Role is one of them aspects of modern role-playing what gives me an acid reflux, and was one of the main contributors, as per its influence on the RPG hobby sphere as a whole, to my turning to older D&D editions. Much, much older...

Anyhow though, much as I love my THAC0's and hit points, D&D is over there, and we're over here. One of the things I like about WHFRP is that it's quite specific with its setting (duh). I'm not as acquainted with the rules as I could be in a week (reading), but I see that table of critical hit locations and effects. This is a game that, straight out of the box, invites you to get your ass kicked and come back asking for more. You don't really get many other ideas if you're getting into this. I've had my dances with "can I play as a half-demon superhero?" and "can my character be the descendant of a demigod?" whilst trying to run a fairly grounded and deadly D&D game, so I'll be happy to not have to worry about that while figuring out my rat-catcher's Toughness score. Oh look, it's a 2. Bring it ON.

Think I’m going to convert a 4ed character (a halfling coachman) I played at the Harrowing event into 1ed rules.
I know some folks don’t like aspects of the Cubicle 7 edition and additions to the background, but there are some really neat ideas in there too. :)

They (Cubicle 7) have been looking after WFRP quite well, they also have some other RPGs - if life were longer I might have looked at some of the later editions, certainly 4th looks to harken back a bit more (2nd tried to clean things up too much 3rd looked too different) and the new version of The Enemy Within campaign seems to have had a lot of effort put into it. They have a few other GW licences for some 40k RPGs I think.

Rules wise I'm hoping some will come back and with a bit of reading it'll be like riding a bike.

I suppose it would be useful to know if anyone has played (or worse I guess GM'd!) any of the major campaigns ... I would guess most people have dallied somewhere with The Enemy Within (played once, GM'd twice for me). So really Doomstones (GM'd once) and A Private War (never done) would be the other two big ones.
