Playing a Role

I expect with real life commitments we might have to chop and change around a bit with days. So what are we up to now - five of us I think? Enough to kick off and see what we can do I guess. I'll try to have a proper play with that software this week and dig out some suggestions for an adventure. I guess we might want to do a few technical tests first to avoid wasting a gaming session!

I checked with the company and only the host needs to have a paid for account to enable the audio/video features so that's good. Probably worth a try since it's essentially Teams/Zoom/etc but designed more for RPGs - so right tool for the job and all that. I'm going to take a punt and subscribe and then maybe we can find a minute to do a few tests.

Oh thought I posted this but must have gotten distracted so just had the draft, so I'll update and redo a bit but need a few people for testing or can do it simpler? cause I probably got enough time to help with some testing out ^_^

Just checked out playrole.com. Seems to be completely browser based, which is good. Native clients often don't support nerds like me running Debian :)

you use Debian flavour Linux? well.. I guess someone needs to
but joking aside, if you are happy with it, it's fine ^_^
problem with Browser based is.. mm.. probably server end which of course, explains subscription, but does have it's own ups and downs and browser compatibly issues. but after some tests, should be fine

Right I've sorted out a subscription and video and audio and whatnot seems to work perfectly okay. So two things: 1 - shall we move this thread to the remote gaming node? - and 2 who wants to do a quick test with me, other than registering an account on https://app.playrole.com/signup you shouldn't need to do anything else - beyond us sorting out a day/time!

We can then figure out how you some of it works.

Now they do have "online" character sheets you can create, but to be honest I'm not super keen on the that as they look far too complicated given how large each field is rendered, so I was thinking we'd probably just use pen and paper for that!

I don't know how many of their "features" we'll use, dice - certainly, the images, audio and other bits all look like they could be useful and the tool being browser based is probably useful given our mix of operating systems. So I'm not expecting to do a lot more than you could with Teams/Zoom/Whatever, but hopefully those few extra bits will make everything integrate a bit better.

I've pulled out the first pile of Warpstone magazines to have a rummage and see if I can find a nice short introduction adventure (that will hopefully be new to you all) I can learn quickly. I've also dusted off a copy of WFRP to remind myself how to play - although hopefully enough seeped into my veins over the years that it'll come back quite quickly! :)

Does everyone have a copy of the rulebook? There is very little difference between the hardback and soft back or the Hogshead edition so any should be fine. I did have a really beaten up copy I used as my "lending copy", but I suspect it didn't get back to me after my last lend since I can't find it obviously. If we're shy a copy or so I might see if I can grab the cheap hardback on ebay at present, although it does have a couple of bids so might not actually go super cheap.

might be idea to move ^_^
I'm up for a quick test, I'll sort out the account tomorrow.

WFRP1, I'll have to let you know in a couple of days about that. I think paper sheets would be better cause.. not sure if they have 100% compatible ones or if you can make your own..

We'd have to make our own and beyond it being a "web form" I don't really quite "get it" - granted it means one canonical data source, but it's just not user friendly like a sheet or two of paper is. I think I mentioned I did some quite nice sheets some years ago for my last campaign and if I can I'll migrate those into some alternative software (since I'm not paying Adobe for InDesign every month at present).

^_^ I mostly use older software.. like when you could buy it second hand when it was a version out, for a far cheaper price.. While I do use Openoffice, MS office hasn't had any decent changes since 2010 (which I got via the community centre I worked for)

well.. signed up ^_^ gotta say though, there intro e-mail likes to put people off.. "No coding skills? No problem. Role’s sheet builder is 100% code-free." no coding? boo hiss.. Can't they atleast put a bit of basic into it?

10 Print "Coding is fun";
20 goto 10
Run
.. depending on your flavour, that'll either run or bring up an overflow error ^_^

Created an account, happy to test. Am free this evening.
As spotted in another thread I have a (rather battered) copy of the original softback edition.

Cool. Sorry been a bit distracted coding (alas not a BOYL booking system) some additions to our company server node synchronisation system that we needed. Anyhow I digress. Perhaps find a minute or two over the weekend for a couple of technical tests. Will PM.

I would always go away from discord for... oh soo many reasons like ones including ten foot barge poles ^_^

anyway, we did a test on Saturday with playapp and it turned out pretty well after a few teething problems, no problems turned up of any note
