Oldhammer Day at the Foundry Discussion

Orlygg

Vassal
As some of you will be aware, Marcus Ansell has offered accomodate us for an Oldhammer day at the Foundry. The ever organised Gaj ( weasil here on the forum ) is already turned his mind towards organising things further. What we really need is ideas about what to do on this day... Hence this thread... Ideas anyone?

OK this is a list that springs to mind, some of it may be a little mad and impossible but better to say the mad stuff and have it fall on it's face than never to dream..

ROC warband mini campaign in a day. The only problem with this is not knowing where the random tables will take you as the campaign progresses. What a pain to have to turn down the double mutation for your leader for want of an identical figure, or that minotaur because you only have spare thugs.

A Roc StD demo game Khorne vs Slaneesh, I have the figures just need to paint them. Themed chaotic terrain, scenario, come and join in. If my stuff forms the core, I can put some lists up for people to see soon. Others could then either add to the list with there own stuff from the lists or just turn up with a warband or unit and join in. If one side gets more than another it just shows the fickle nature of the gods.

ROC art exhibition, Tony on your blog mentioned bringing some art, perhaps for a 25th anniversary other artists could be persuaded to pop along. Amateur RoC art exhibition even with virtual exhibits sent in by our over seas friends. Could even be a competition judged by Tony?

RoC Golden (Chaos) Gobbo. All entries to be Chaos, could have virtual entries. Perhaps persuade the Ansells to judge for us.

Others have done it so perhaps we could commission a figure?

Badger Zhu to make some Oldhammer Contact 2013 T-shirts. Sell them on the day or just buy in advance like the last ones he did.

Photo graph the lot and present it all here.

Form a committee of some sorts to actually get all of this organized.

Some excellent ideas Erny... I like the idea of having a huge battle, Khorne Vs Slaanesh that could be fought amongst us all. Warbands would be fun, but hard to play for the reasons you explain... Perhaps if there was interest we could all just bring a characterful warband each for a smaller game first... Having actually played realm of chaos a lot last year, i know that one small game between small forces can take up to three hours...

Sigh...and double sigh...I may have to send a life size cardboard cut out of myself just so I can say I attended....triple sigh....stupid ocean!

Well I can bring a few thousand points of Khorne to that party....if it helps....and mine is painted!

Art exhibition would be cool, do they have the wallspace?

How many tables do they have? Would it be just one game or could there be a few going on? A big Khorne vs. Slannesh fight could be cool. I also nominate Thantsants to run Orcs Drift and sign copies of his coffee-table book.

Erny, I've got a few t-shirt ideas "on the boil" as it were...

Hmm. Chaos. Never liked it. From it's very first appearance in the Warhammer world, in its earliest of forms, and all the way through, I have never liked it. Ok, I own a few figures for WFRP purposes, and can field a converted nomadic horse-tribe marauder style army, but the rest, meh!

But other forms of Oldhammer, yeah, I'd be keen to join in that. Maybe 3rd ed would come back to me easily (I played it right through 4th and 5th ed).

There might even be a bit of Magnificent Sven by then - or a temple of Rigg...

If there was the interest.

Zhu - I'll have to finish off the pdf versions of Orc's Drift before thinking about the coffee book ;)

I also have a nascent Chaos/Undead warband centred around my character Baron Kraust - just need to get painting the skeleton horde, beastmen, thugs, minotaurs, centaurs, Red Redemptionist monks, thug archers, Chaotic creature host...

Art sounds good as do the Ansell judged (hopefully) competitons - the virtual entries are a nice idea. Would Time Zones permit any form of skyping with our overseas brethren?

Hi chaps

I've written to Marcus to find out more about the facilities - no reply just yet. (As an aside, Erny, I'd still be interested in information about your games club, but that's a slightly different thing now...)

I wasn't thinking of a RoC specific event - rather, just the opportunity to play 3rd edition. I've asked about a two day event - given that most of us will have to travel, we'll probably stay over - I was thinking a great opportunity for travelling oldhammerers to find a pub and tell war stories...

Anyway, I don't believe we're likely to get through more than 1 game of 3rd ed. in a day - the system is slow and most of us won't have played in 20+ years, so there'll be lots of reading books. Also, I suspect that most members of this forum would be prone to long stages of tomfoolery and general buggering around throughout the day.

Assuming that's the case, I've thought it would be a good idea for people us to include games masters. This is something that would allow some people who are more collector/modeller focussed to participate without having to bring armies or otherwise push stuff around. The alternative is if we have gaming over both days, players can GM for other players on one of the days, with players swopping roles the next day.

This will require preparation to happen before the day itself.

Lets pretend theres a dedicated event organiser who would receive the suggested communications and process them accordingly.

I'd propose that about two weeks (or earlier, if the attendee is ready) before the event, the following should occur:

Attendees should indicate whether they would like to play only, play and gm, or gm only.

Gamers could send a list of painted(!) figures or some sort of nominal army list to that person, who could match opponents (based on their figure lists and possibly preferences). So, for example, one could match Thantsants little Slann warband (if that was in his figure list he sent through) to one of Orlygg's RoC warbands, as this seems 'right' and 'fair' - as opposed to matching him to Erny's 60,000 point chaos horde.

Once this is done, the event organiser would allocate a GM and email that person the figure list. It would be up to the GM to create a scenario for the two players and their figures. The GM would set the table up for the two payers and possibly even dictate deployment, depending on the scenario. It would be up to the GM.

I suppose we could provide for those who would rather not have a GM and just manage events by themselves.

Another idea could be to organise normal games for the 1st day and arrange a large RoC 'all-in' game for day 2. I'd still advocate a GM for this, but perhaps we could even invite Bryan to do that for us?

Anyway, that was my unstructured braindump. Discuss.

I'll let you know when I get something from Marcus.

I don't know what you mean...

Good thinking there - like the idea of little match ups.

Mind you trying to stave off 60 000 points worth of Chaos horde could be fun as well!

After reading peoples suggestions, I feel that we should not limit games to pure RoC and not include oldhammerers whose preference would be for 2nd or 3rd edition (or something else entirely). Gaj is correct that we need a good piece of organisation to make it fun. Its a great suggestion to encourage Thantsants to bring Orcs drift... That would be a true spectacle!

Jealous...

I wish you guys the best of luck and hope its an amazing day(or days) full of the wonder of Oldhammer. Wish I could be there.

Fair point Harry! Though I do have some stuff painted:

I would still love to set up a large RoC game given the anniversary and the Fact it was the great Bryan Ansell's great interest and greatest gift to us all. As he would be there I think it would be a suitable thank you to the man for an awesome quarter century of fun and darkness. I like to think he'd get a kick out of it. Joining my meager efforts with your brilliance on the table would be a real honor.

Gaj is spot on with the idea of small match ups happening too and I could certainly see my way to bring along my orcs, no wood elves, no dwarves, no dark elves, no undead... well you get the idea. That said I d have spare armies if people want to game with one who don't have forces of their own (yet) just promise to treat them as gently as your lovers!

So how possible would a two day games fest be. I know my wife wants to go off to Berlin with her sister for the weekend some time so I should have the brownie points to burn on a weekend away myself. Would Marcus be up for a weekend. We do need to get organised if we want to make this all that we can. Gaj is clearly the person putting his best foot forward to be the chair of a organising committee, I'd like to help to, even if my only roll is to organise a large demo RoC game for one day. We really should have someone try to organise an art exhibition, the smaller games, other demo games (Orcs drift anyone), golden gobbo (with a category for best small army from the games), publicity to attract new converts, a bring and buy/swap, virtual presence for over seas contributions and even a the best local pub to bundle down on the Saturday night.

You speak a lot of sense, Erny... You mention an internet component. I feel this is vital to oldhammer as remote games are being played. This could be reflected by a remote game being played during the day/days. Another important aspect would be a selected hotel to stay at, like conventions do, so the social side of our community can be explored with beer and whiskey chasers...

I would like to come. A flight to London costs around 70 euro. Would be great if someone could pick me up from there on. Another possibility is to organise a road trip to Nottingham and pick up people along the way. This would allow me to take my table with me. The passing to England costs around 300 euro. I should be able to take three passengers with me. Anyone from Belguim, France or the Netherlands up for it?

I was thinking of this... I live near Stansted airport (15 mins from my house) and Erny lives 45 minutes away so a 'road trip' would indeed be possible...

So perhaps the next step is to confirm they would be happy hosting a two day event and then to sort out a date?

Marcus Ansell has made the offer and Gaj is on the case. We just have to wait and see what develops over the coming weeks.

Marcus has got back to us already... Here's what he said, so all interested parties are in the know..

"Hello James and Gaj,

We're happy to have you at Foundry pretty much whenever you like. We do have two other bookings in the summer, but neither of them have actually come up with a date yet either. These are Andy, Gareth and Mark who put on the 40K event late last year and a group from Durham who will be putting on a Warhammer Historical Sicilian Wars game.

We have quite a lot of space, and could probably fit you all in together. But if you want a more discreet event, that would be fine too.

As there would be six months or so of discussion about the event on the Internet, you might be surprised how many spectators turn up.

We only have four tables set up at the moment, these are already terrained. However, we would certainly be able to sort out more: though they would probably just be plain tables. We don't have much by way of scenery that isn't already attached to tables. My father still has a couple of hills that go back to GW and quite a lot of buildings, hedges, fences and walls. I expect that some of the participants might be pleased to be asked to volunteer to bring along terrain .

At the Rogue Trader event spectators drifted in and out through the day. I would guess that there were more than 25. However, the event had very little publicity or prior warning. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

Other than the three visitors from Durham, I think that everyone was local apart from Steve who came from Lincoln.

Last time we had free urns of coffee and cream buns. Free cream buns might not work if there are loads more people.

We don't have any restrictions as to what you eat or drink while playing: though we are dead set against explosives, sword fighting and/or climbing on tables.

We don't have a great deal of parking. We have a yard out back (opposite the mosque) which will be useful if you are bringing larger items with you that you need to drop off. There are plenty of car parks within walking distance though.

We live in Newark: half an hour or so out, so we have never had a reason to stay in Nottingham: I can ask around for you about accommodation.

There is no problem with visiting gamers buying, selling or exchanging goods with each other. Obviously, we will be very pleased if you buy our toy soldiers. There is no obligation though. We will do our best to get all the old Citadel stuff in stock. We have a huge range of Kevin Adams' Orcs, Ogres, Snorklings, Dwarfs and other odds and ends (more than 200 items I would guess) that seem to be little known in the wider fantasy world.

My father says that he doesn't think that he has a Lichemaster either!

Cheers

Marcus"

So, we just need to set a date and organise (and book) a place to reside in... Then its the long, ardeous process of persuading the wives to let us go..!
