Oldhammer Day at the Foundry Discussion

Going out in a limb here, but I am assuming people are going to want a weekend to travel and game over. Now the Foundry opens at 10:30 and closes at 4:30 on Saturdays. Obviously, its closed Sunday. So we just need to choose an appropriate weekend in August or September.

Dates are;

3rd August - not ideal
10th August
17th August
24th August
31st August - Bank Holiday Weekend - AVOID AVOID!!!

7th September
14th September
21st September
28th September

My preference is for August. Summer holidays would make it very easy for those of us who work in education.

I was thinking of this... I live near Stansted airport (15 mins from my house) and Erny lives 45 minutes away so a 'road trip' would indeed be possible...
Great, I'll consider it a possibility. For what its worth, August and September are fine by me, except the first week of August.

Free cream buns!

I'M IN!!!

They have some great tables it will be brill to see some old fantasy on them.

I have a old Blood Bowl (Old Bowl?) stadium I built that has seen action in a number of GW stores over the years I can bring along.
(Bloodbowl always a crack ... and you can fit in a fair few games in a day).

If they are providing extra table space I have a bunch of old board sections built by the Perry's that I can bring along ... can't get anymore oldhammer than that.

Also a teacher ... so August suits me best ... but the first weekend in August is already taken

Whoa, whoa, whoa - everyone just calm down for a sec.

It's great to see the enthusiasm, but bear in mind nothing yet has been agreed with Foundry. I'm sure it will be and they are very (very!) accommodating, but let us organise what we want to do so that they understand what they're letting themselves in for so that we can get an actual agreement that says this thing is going ahead.

So, I'll bite - I'm happy to try and organise this thing for us.

Looking at this thread, the suggestions up until now have been braindump sort of suggestions. A little unstructured in their presentations (mine included).

So, firstly, I want to make clear the ideas that have been proposed so far:

1. Realm of Chaos warband mini-campaign. I understand this to be approximately a 10-20(ish) figure sort of skirmish?

2. Realm of Chaos demo game - I understand this to be a large game, either with two large armies from Harry and Erny and the potential for others to join in.

3. 2nd Edition Scenarios - Magnificent Sven or Orcs Drift (presumably provided by Thantsants) - I swear I'll bring Terror of the Lichemaster if someone can find me a Lichemaster (in time!)!

4. A massive chaos horde (60,000pts?) being challenged by smaller, allied forces?

5. A remote oldhammer game played on the internet? Presumably for those too far away to get in?

6. Pre-event player and army matching for GM'd standard games of Warhammer.

7. Stock standard WFB3, as organised on the day by those present

Now I'm not saying which of these things any of us prefer just yet, I'm just tabling the suggestions I've been able to distil from this thread so far.

Secondly, now that the options are a little clearer, we need to understand what they actually mean - and who they are for!

Who they are for. Its great that there are people who are proposing demo games, but you need to be clear on what you're proposing - if you do mean to being 60,000 points of chaos, that means you need to transport 60,000 points of chaos safely there and back.

If you're proposing to run some sort of demo game, if could be that you may not end up actually playing a game yourself.

If you're proposing to share your armies - that means that someone else - someone you may never have met ever before, will be accountable for your army on the day. That's fine if its a regular oldhammerer who appreciates the true value of what he's working with, but if we're thinking of anybody participating in a demo game, that could mean that members of the great unwashed are manipulating your figures - are you okay with that?

I'm not at all sure how the internet thing will work, in all fairness. I think that would detract from events on the day and be very hard to manage, but I'm open to ideas.

Thirdly, how do we promote oldhammer from this event (if at all)?

That is - not how do we promote the event, but what lasting things from this event can we burn into other people's brains?

Demo games are an obvious option here, but need to be considered in light of two above. Also, would too many demo games detract/distract people? If you're running demo games with the intention of promoting oldhammer, you'd better be good with people too (no garlic abuse the night before)!

Do we showcase a specific army matchup? I.E. do we put the two most beautiful armies on the most beautiful table and get the best photographic equipment we have to track the battle and produce a battle report?

Fourthly, who wants to participate in 'doing things'?

I'll create a separate thread for this specific question, so that it doesn't clutter this one. But, this is not 'I think I'd like to sort of maybe help with some kind of skirmishy sort of game with ponies and goldfish or something...', but rather - a clear commitment - My name is X and I can help do Y on the day because of Z'. Its better to have 3 committed people than 20 non-committed people. If you have a good idea, but don't think you're the one to implement it, that's fine too - I'm not saying don't suggest things - just be clear on whether or not you can actually do the thing you're proposing to do, or if you want someone else to consider doing it.

Fifthly, there are things which aren't games coming up. Are there other ideas and can you help?

A painting competition (Golden Gobbo?)

Art exhibition?

A bring and buy/trade mechanism (Marcus has confirmed he's happy for this to happen, but out of respect, I think we should try and keep this to OOP things. Not hard for us I don't think...)

So - these are things to think about. I think we should come up with some good answers to these before we promote this thing any further.

hmm, always the voice of calm reason Gaj. Perhaps in all the excitement we have got abit carried away! Its probably best to keep things simple first time around. If that' s successful then we could try other things with a second event.

Ultimately, people will want the chance to play third edition or associated games and look at and talk old school minis... perhaps we should just stick to that!

Firstly ... you forgot Old Bowl.
(EDIT: Most of that lot were just ideas ... it will filter down to smething sensible ... doable).
Secondly ... I am happy to bring my minis, drop them on the table and let folks play with them. I like seeing my toys being played with and seeing other folks enjoying them besides me.
Thirdly ... I wouldn't promote the event at all. I don't think you want it getting too big. Let folks find you here. If they are into oldhammer enough they will find their way to this forum. Start small let it grow natuarally. (Just my two pence worth ... feel free to ignore me.)
I would promote Oldhammer following the event through your blogs and the various forums ... folks will find there way to oldhammer.
Fourthly ... my name is Harry ... I can come. I can bring some minis, boards, scenery, an Old Bowl stadium and a competative attitude towards drinking on saturday evening. I am not interested in GMing anything or indeed that bothered about playing in public. I am happy to enjoy watching games, drinking tea, chatting to folks and eating cream cakes.

Any Good?

Oh ... Fithly ... I think a painting competition would be great ... I love looking at nicely painted minis.

As I've indicated on the FB page this is almost certainly going to be ran in the middle of July so shouldn't conflict at all with an August or September date (though for purely selfish reasons, the more time between the two the better so I can save up money and brownie points to make the trip again).

When Foundry have ran two day events in the recent past it's tended to be on Friday/Saturday. They've got one in this format coming up at the start of March. Which isn't to say they wouldn't be happy to open up on a Sunday, just to say it's another option if they don't. They put on a very nice spread for the recent Rogue Trader game but if numbers look like they're going to be high then it might be an idea for is to cater the event a little ourselves.

At this point I realise I haven't introduced myself on the forum and have only recently started posting so... viewtopic.php?f=16&t=307

I'm having to start from scratch again with building up an army but I hope to at least have a warband by then and would be happy to play or GM something.

Now I REALLY wish I was able to attend.

I assume you mean 2nd edition as your OldBowl? I always loved that astrogranite pitch... Crappy grass board from later editions just didn' t compare!

I'd love to bring Orc's Drift along and certainly wouldn't mind folk pushing my minis round the table - I've got all the minis and terrain necessary to play all the scenarios.

The only thing I'd say is that when I played it through with the lads and lasses at my old Explorer Scout group it did take us most of Saturday and Sunday to play the four scenarios - admittedly with many perusals of the 2nd ed. rulebook and refreshment breaks.

I wouldn't mind GM'ing it either although certainly wouldn't turn down any offers of help on that front - might be nice to have a quick game of OldBowl or summat else myself if time allowed.

I doubt Magnificent Sven will be ready in time although I may have finished building the Temple of Rigg by then so that scenario might be a goer as a treasure hunt with a few Norse warbands and their Amazon opponents.

Harry's ideas about letting the thing grow organically sound sensible - are we ready and able to cope with large crowds - if we actually attract them?

Painting comp sounds like a must too.

HI all

Thanks for the various ideas that have been floated. I've collected these all together.

Foundry are happy to have us there for a Saturday and a Sunday and looking at the date polls, it looks like the weekend of the 24th of August is going to be 'F-Day'. There are still a few more days to vote, so if that sounds completely untenable, please indicate your opinion by voting!

Having spoken to a selection of oldhammerers, we've discussed how we think the days might look. It feels like the general consensus is that this isn't a Games-Day scale event and we need to be careful that we're not overloading the thing with hundreds of activities, as this is our first event and therefore bound to be a bit 'fast and loose' in the organisation and execution. The primary objective we all seem to have is to play games - art is nice, but we can see that on the internet - its much (much!) harder to find players.

To this end, I'll be posting some polls up, which I will use to try and gauge the opinion of 'the people' (Yes, you too! Even if we have to stretch the definition of 'people'):

  • The main reason I would attend would be to...

What games would you like to play?

    Organisation of the days

This is the 25th anniversary of Slaves to Darkness - do you want any Realms of Chaos activity to be specifically shaped around this book, only, or would you prefer Realms of Chaos in all its gory detail (bearing in mind that we could run a Lost and the Damned anniversary event when it comes up in 2 years time).

As I create the polls, I'll link them here.

Finally, now feels like a good time to start thinking about a name for the event. It could just be called Foundry Day, but perhaps we could be a little more creative than that?

Here's an opener, then. In honour of Bryan Ansell himself:

Bryan_Ansell.jpg

...I propose we call it 'Mullets and Moustaches'. 1 free reroll in each game you play if you turn up with a fake mullet and moustache. You may automatically win any game of your choice if you actually grow your own mullet and moustache (possibly a bit sexist, but I'm not holding my breath that this event will be overflowing with the fairer sex'...

I can't go if it's the weekend of the 24th. I have been booked to work (one man show - i.e. me!) on that weekend since August last year.

Sad moment for me, but you guys will have fun, and you can post pictures and stories. As for me when this sort of thing happens I use it as an excuse to organise something else I can attend with no guilty feelings of selfishness. I already ran two little 'mini-bashes' for the Warhammer Empire forum members for just this same reason, time to think about another! So I will still have a good time!!

Hi Padre

Well, your good spot regarding the bank holiday weekend may change that - some people genuinely would not want to travel then - we'll keep our fingers crossed for you :)

I love 'Mullets and Moustaches'.
I defo think we should go for oldhammer day as we seem to be naturallly calling it that ... and that is what we all seem to be about here.

.... also is it not, also the 25th anniversary of: Warhammer Armies ... and Siege ... and the Mighty Fortress .... and the 25th anniversay of BloodBowl (2nd edition) ... and Orlygg, the 25th anniversary of Dark Future ...oh yes, 1998 was a hell of year. ... so it does not have to be all about the RoC.

EDIT: Next year will be 25 years since Heroquest and SpaceHulk.

Harry you are quite correct, though Warhammer 3rd was last year if we are being exact.

Oldhammer Day is really about people enjoy all the old school stuff. If people want to bring DF or HQ and play away then more the merrier. Or any old school game for that matter. This isn't a set, defined event from a tournament point of view but a gathering of like minded souls.

And, I suspect, beer will be involved somewhere along the lines too...

OK you've talked me into it you smooth talking b@st@rd.

(I thought 'Armies' had arrived the year after Warhammer?)

Bit late to the party as usual but I'm really up for this. I'm even hoping to bring along a warband - painted no less - for my first wargame in about 25 years! Yes that's right, Slaves to Darkness was born around the same time as my wargaming days died...

I'm hoping to bring along some of my old John Blanche painted figures for display, plus some of my original RoC artwork (if we go the artwork route).

Happy to be involved in organising this event so if the (chaos) powers that be want to call upon me to be a spawn for the day just say the word.

Thanks for the offer Steve... Looking forwards to meeting you and seeing your treasures. I think its just going to be a case or 'turn up, tune in (to the old school) and drop out some sixes on those dice!' rather than a structured event. I think we all just want to play some games, enjoy the models and drink a few beers!
