Old Worlder Ally Contingent

Yes, Sir!

I blocked in all the colors. For the clothing I used the same four colors that I already used on the saddle trim. The trim on the clothing I painted in yellow. The rest was mostly some browns.

Then I hit a problem: The models are all wearing a broad sash type of thing, which cries out to be painted in a bright color to stand out. But I already painted so much else in bright colors... for now they are all black. I am thinking about white perhaps... not sure yet.

After that, the metal areas where washed with black, the rest of the models except the skin and the yellow with a mixture of black and dark sepia, both from Secret Weapons.

^Oh, those are looking sweet!

Thank you.

I highlighted all the areas on the riders. The main highlight color I used on all colors except for the browns, metals and whites was Vallejo 70.858 Ice Yellow. This toned down the garish colors all over the models, and brought them slightly closer together. For the sashes I decided to use light orange, again highlighted with the Ice Yellow.

I then hid the integral bases of the horses with filler, into which I pressed some larger stones.

Once the filler was dry, I brushed on PVA and sprinkled the bases with finer sand.

Once the PVA was dry, I secured the sand with scenic glue (acrylic medium/alcohol mix).

I painted the bases in my usual color scheme.

I then applied static grass. From the miniatures, I cut off the paper clips, leaving a small part in place in order to pin the models into the horses.

When mounting the miniatures onto the horses, I drilled a hole to pin the rider in place - which turned out was not well planned. Most of the miniatures need to be placed quite exactly, to fit in front of the bed rolls on the saddle, without interfering with stuff hanging from their belts at the riders backs. Now more or less eyeballing the exact place where to drill the hole was rather difficult. If you spot any models, where the riders crotch does not actually meet the saddle, this is an artistic effect showing the rider standing in his stirrups, eager to close with the enemy - and totally not me having botched up...

The models are basically done, the only thing left is varnishing them. But with currently themperatures being below 0°C, I will wait some for that.

They look great. I can relate to the temperature thing. Been meaning to prime my knights. but it's below -3° here. Haven't had this much snow in 10 years, and all throughout november early december it was at 6-8°.....

The Oldworlder Ally Contingent needs a commander. Two actually.

I ordered a mounted figure with one of my last orders from Mirliton, that I wanted to use. Then, while rummaging through my pile of lead, I found another suitable miniature. I think this was a freeby that came with a Wargames Illustrated issue some years back, and is some kind of historical character. Can't remember exactly. I think it is by Perry Miniatures, but I am not sure of that either.

If someone recognises that mini, please let me know.

Seems I planned to paint the WI mini already in the past, the rider and horse had both halfheartedly the flash removed and primer applied. Not sure what I did back then, but it was no good.

The Mirliton model suffers from a slight miscast, the left hand is a blob. I am not much of a sculptor, but I think I managed ok to resculpt that blob into a hand.

I hid the bases of the horses with same plaster, into which I pressed some larger stones.

To ease painting the sand, I basecoated the bases black first. Makes some places between the sand I will miss with the brown basecoat not noticable.

Finally, the sand was glued on with PVA.

I painted the bases except for some drybrushing on the stones, painted the horses main colors and gave them a wash.

After the horses and gear was painted, I looked for how to paint the 'color' of the models, the heraldy. For the horses, only the Mirliton one had space for heraldy. Looking through Warhammer Armies' Oldworlder Ally Contingent section, I choose the following shield design as inspiration (page 138):

The area was too small for my skill to faithfully recreate all the squiggly sunbeams, and also for the facial expression I wish I was able to paint more detail, but from afar it looks okay. I painted three connected mountains, which is for the commanders heritage, the story is still being worked on.

I finished the the two models.

For the second rider I choose a design from Warhammer Armies' Bretonnia section, p. 64 as inspiration.

Here they are:

Time to finish the Oldworlder Ally Contingent; with this last installment I return to the beginning: To the An der Fähre Village Guard. Because they do have a mounted detachment, which is not yet represented in my force, you know.

I once again use Mirliton models, from their fantasy human range.

PXL_20230209_214902292.jpg

I glued the horses to the bases and hid the integral base with ready mixed filler.

PXL_20230214_202301380.jpg

To prevent white holes showing between the sand later, I painted the base.

PXL_20230215_070620025.jpg

Then I applied the sand and small stones with PVA glue.

PXL_20230215_120027116.jpg

I primed the models black with a rattle can.

PXL_20230318_193807161.jpg

Then I painted the bases with my usual colors.

PXL_20230318_220033686.jpg

The horses are done, all the leather so far is only basecoated brown.
