My Random stuff

really don't like how alot of my camera work is.. okay, old camera, not great space and stuff but.. ugh. Was thinking of doing some shots outside but.. a mixture between no day light hours and pissing down with rain.. and a bit of no real time to do I.

I'll probebly take a new photo somepoint. This is the Mighty Canon, with Crew, from Battle Masters. My colour scheme for my Empire stuff is Yellow tops, red Bottoms with Blue head triming, so I used this scheme.. of course.. I'm not 100% sure but i'm sure the emblem on the .. lighters armour (which is also on the cannon) is a Roaring Lions head, so I went with Gold mane, White fur and red fangs.

I decied PLA printed inserts which clip on to the battle master bases (but decided to hot metal glue it on to hold stronger, but still easy to remove if I want to) so I can base the figures and have a decent hold on the BattleMasters Trays. The grass mat i used on the base didn't come out well cause.. I made a mistake and glued the insert onto the tray BEFORE putting on the mat and used a knife a bit too blunt (my normal source for cheap new blades seam to have run out ¬_¬)

CanonBad.JPG

It's not amazingly easy (or hard really) to see but I slightly screwed up on the lighter guys tunic as there is a bit of a bump of paint.. annoying also his trim is meant to be a different shade but it's hard to make out..

techinally, the .. rammer guy (I really don't know the crew names.. I think I'll go with Burt and Ralph... with Melessia the Canon) isn't wearing armour.. I'm pretty sure it's meant to be a jerkin but.. looks good as armour and makes sense as such.

Looking good. I like Burt(or is it Ralph?)'s armour. This is the view of Melessia you definitely DON'T want to be seeing!

thanks ^_^ hard to tell but i tried to use a dark grey for the edge of the 'fake' barrel and then use a bit of a wash so give more the impression of depth, completely failed.. didn't ruin it though.. I think Burt better be the one with the rammer.

----------------

Minor note: I've now invested in a cheap (not point getting a decent price one for what i do) light cube thing.. different backgrounds, fold up cube, lights in it.. see if that'll be useful for me... should have it for the weekend

Got the box thing.. a very cheap one but I think worth it for the bits alone. I felt the 40 leds (two strips of 20) were a bit under lighting it, so I added another 20 (two strips of 10) so it's light from all four sides of the top but.. still a bit under lite.. I'll probebly backlight.. well, more front light maybe..

but either way, probebly due to the plainness, photos coming out MUCH better.. case in point, the Cannon.. I think the crew are a little dark but the focus and stuff seams far better

Cannon2.jpg

i think the grass on the insert looks very poor in that.. dosn't look quite that rough in real life but... i might redo it at some point.

Yeah that's a great improvement. I find even using a lightbox I have to up the brightness 10-30% in photoshop to get a decent image.

Got my one set of Three Knights almost done. Knights of the White Wolf. While I like the horse models, I can't say i'm finding them great to paint.. kinda the issue of where the ... What I just learnt is called 'caparison', goes onto the body. kinda the normal smoothness of the mold making it hard to see where one bit starts and another ends.. still, not too bad..

One of the knights, the Lance was broken and while that isn't too hard to replace (as I was missing the lance itself), I decided to do something more fancy and gave him a Battle Hammer (White Wolf Knights are meant to carry Hammers), and a new head just to make him look different and like a leader of the three. I'm not sure where that head is from.. I think a space Marine.. beard makes me think Space Wolf but the hair.. it was a very bad long topknot which.. very unspace wolfie thing (who were based on Nordic stuff).. had to cut that ugly thing off and he works well as a bald guy with a bushy beard.

Anyway, Just need to finsh one knight off and paint the shield on the leader.. I'm in two minds on the shields right now but i'll see how it goes and take some pictures when they are ready as a unit.

My Dungeon Master set has been a bit delaied as I did a custom sculpt for the 'screamer' cause I couldn't find a decent model that was close enough.. got it mostly painted but then decided I felt it was pretty crap.. so I've kinda left it alone while I work on other things.

And I'm kinda working on a custom figure which i've been waiting on some parts for, which turned up today. Gonna be part of my learning to do basic sculpting (I'm never gonna be a sculpter nor one that can do more fancy stuff.. Just looking to be okay at simple things. This figure will need some hair, probebly a custom shield and custom axe.. that one is gonna be the bugger...

A couple of pretty bad images.. been working through some stuff and there has been.. some reasons for lack of too much.. but anyway..
DSCF2468.JPG
road side shrine from Alternative Armies (along with a AHQ Man-at-arms for scale.
DSCF2471.JPG
really badly focused image.. yeah.. gonna have to take a better shot some time when I get the chance.. I do have some more stuff to photo.. Anyway, Giant Slug (Resin version) also from Alternative Armies. This one was the free gift from.. some past order. They do some interesting free gifts.. I think this was when I got the re-issue of the metal NB2 Dragon

thanks ^_^

I got another one of that Shrine to do up sometime. That slug is pretty nice, Tom Meier is a good sculpter for such things. His Ballerina Fairy range are pretty fun but haven't got any as I don't really have too much need at the moment.

That shrine is a cool model, I might have to indulge myself at some point and get one. The colours are good on the man at arms, I really really must remember to do brighter colours on some of my models, I look at everyone's on here and constantly think - those look nice!

I quite like the out of focus slug, feels rather like it's just slimed its way suddenly up to the camera lens whilst you were going "what an interesting slug monster I'll just take a photo of that"...

^_^ I think for some reason, it focused on the saddle.. which is.. erm.. the mantle? not huge on slug anatomy.. through looking at it more.. I think it's my laptop stand and the bit of grass at the back is more the focus.. weird camera.. when I get the chance I have to set up my little photo box.

I always do my Empire figures as Yellow Tunic over Red tights. They should have a nice bright colour setup. Not sure why.. Talabecland kinda used them colours but not in that pattern back in 4ed.. but really, Alot of the Empire are more 'Stand up and be seen' kinda guys I think, So normally go for that ^_^

Really excellent work here man! Love the roadside shrine & the slug is perfect. Looking forward to seeing your dragon painted up as well then! I’d thought about picking one up and unfortunately decided against it.

Thanks, but that dragon will take a while to get around to. I've got one half-painted Rock dragon to do first. Right now, I've been inspired (if you call it that) because I've been able to get a few friends together to do what is hopefully gonna be atleast a quarterly gaming session and the first one (later this month) is .. HeroQuest! So I'm painting up some spare unpainted ones (Heroes), as well as getting around to finishing and doing up some special characters (Ulag/Grak, Sir Ragnar etc). Hopefully get some pictures of them done up and shown. Comparing my now Finished Barbarian to one I painted back in collage (Had a 'family' set of HeroQuest since.. well, it was new.. with all the UK add-ons, but when at collage, one day I went past a charity shop and they had the 'Advanced Quest' version really cheap, so I brought that and we were able to play a weekly game in a 'home group' lesson which was mostly.. not doing much), it's SOO much better.. basing the colours on the Mike McVey proto paintjobs of course ^_^.

Ulag is a spare BattleMasters Orc, cause they are suitably larger and more armoured, but same style (not sure who sculpted them but wouldn't surprise me to be the same people) though my Ragnar is having a bit of trouble.. I had thought about a few possible figures I have but had a few things in mind that I wanted. The Advanced HeroQuest Warrior was possible but kinda didn't want it to have any weapons (he was a prisoner with no weapons.. Limits his use as a figure but still), and I wanted an exposed head. I think I got a figure that'll suit (maybe with a bit of tweaking). I got it with a bunch of others.. First I throught it was more a Chaos Warrior but it turned out to be Elf.. anyway.. see how things go ^_^

way too dark but..DSCF2481.JPG
First up, the HeroQuest Hero set, painting based on the Mike McVey Protos. No good at the more mousey blonde hair so the Elf and Wizard have brighter hair. Trying to go a be more with my painting to get it better, the Elf has green trousers with red strips, which have a black edge. the Barbarian has spots on his loin cloth and the Wizard... ah, the wizard.. the flame effects were.. a pain and kinda okay.. the striping at the bottom of the cape, as well as the slight light blue to darker blue fade, and the stars and moons. All in all, I'm quite happy with them and better detail then I normally do so.. nice skill advancedment.

DSCF2485.JPG
Here is Ulag, the Orc Warlord (and his son), which is a Battlemasters Orc on 25mm round base (I normally use 30mm lipped but as the original heroQuest one are basically 25mm, this works out fine Checkered trousers were a pain.. I'm never 100% happy with my checkering as there are noticable 'gaps' between the black corners.. but better then i have done in the past. Since the Battlemaster Shields are flat, I decided to try and sculpt an old style shield.. This is more of an goblin shield though.. Face has a tongue sticking out but hard to see in this image.. big fangs might have made it better but it's fine.

Next to him, is my Female Barbarian proxy. She is a bit shorter then the normal barbarian, which is fine, and the sword is pretty blunt, but that's fine. It's a Celtos female warrior from Brigade models these days. I liked it because the pose is very much the Barbarian's pose, so matched well. Her colours were kinda based on original Teela from Masters of the Universe (not the cartoon, the toy line) but more the prototype hand painted figure (so more detail) but to match the Barbarian, I put spots based on.. I think snow Leopard.

Third is my Dwarf Trollslayer. The figure is a resin I got from a company i can't remember, but they sell cheap random batchs of 'printer error' models. Which sounds like a good thing to me. If a figure printed wrong or does match there 'standards', sell them off cheap for conversion work or paint testing. Problem is, they are mostly 32-35mm scale so all are a bit on the tall side, but some nice stuff.. This dwarf seams a bit big BUT taking into account the leaping pose, he isn't much bigger then the HQ Dwarf, just a bit more bulky.. and the pose and style was clearly saying Trollslayer.

I've almost finished my Fire Mage, with a colour scheme which might confuse some. I have also been working on customising a figure for Sir Ragnar and hope to get that painted before my game on Thursday.

Oh and most of the figures (apart from the female Barbarian) have the whites of the eyes (red for the Goblin) but no pupils. I did put pupils for the female Barbarian but I'm never quite happy with them so.. just leaving the whites is fine with me (and no.. classical old statues weren't 'white eyes', which lead to things like the comic character 'The Phantom' having white eyes, and later other comic characters.. classical old statues were painted, and mostly weirdly (really.. look at the restored Roman ones.. they loved their bright colours) but most of the paints don't last.).

Looking good!
Have you tried starting with a black eye and adding two white dots? It's unintuitive as you'd think adding two fine dots was harder than a single one but I find it actually much easier and more effective than starting with the white

That pin striping looks pretty neat and that female barbarian proxy fits in nicely.

I might have to try Fimm's suggestion about eyes, I hate doing them myself - although I did buy some fine tip marker pens for dotting eyes and doing some other bits and pieces which was easier than my shaky hands and a brush!
