How did I miss the last couple of updates on your thread. Lovely work. I generally always aim for a very matte finish on my models, but as you've said the little sheen is actually quite nice. Good find on the flying stands, although I've forsaken authenticity for "not falling over all the time" and opted for more modern large based ones on my recent models!

I do like the Carrion paint job, I need some for my undead. Not sure if I had any back in the day so will have to consult my brother to see if he has any in our old collection. Otherwise if anyone has any suggestions for good proxies for Carrion I'd happily take them - I was never a super fan of the old sculpt - the wings looked odd stuck on top of the boxy I always thought (although the C34 one is great).

Cheers,

Once I've glued Carrion to the base I was wondering how stable it will be. That even older Carrion looks great. These Carrions do look like one part stuck on another. Like both versions.

Not sure what that "carrion" is supposed to be . . . but I love it! It's like some kind of crazy zombie platypus pterodactyl vulture. Great stuff! And you get great effects. I may have to look into that Liquitex varnish. I keep thinking about ditching my rattle can varnish, as it's just so much trouble to spray paint things. (It takes me an age and a day.) If I could just brush it on it'd probably get done more quickly and with less mess.

Cheers,

I think Carrions are nice addition to the Undead Army. Not many armies got proper flying units ( especially if you exclude Dogs of War Catrazza blokes ).

Far as varnish in a can goes, I don't like it. Too sensitive to environment conditions and also it's a spray. I always fall for that "easy to use" and then living in a cloud most of the day. Menage to frost half of the Blood Angels actually, and most of the Orks. Then next few minis varnish like a dream then next few complete nightmare. metals are grey, red is pink side and so on...

I've used varnish in various ways. Thick coverage with blueish traces when wet also thin coat and even fast coat when everything start to foam all over whole miniature. Always ended in same effect. If too glossy, then I use Citadel Lahmian Medium applied with brush also.

I even thinking of going back to undercoat minis with brush as I did when I started

^So you're saying the brush on Liquitex varnish goes blue, or cloudy? Or you're saying the spray on stuff does? (I'm guessing the latter, since I've had that happen once. Just once, but I might live someplace drier than you. Not in the forbidden dessert, but also not in the dismal swamp.)

As to brush on base coats . . . I've never once done it any other way. (Except on terrain, which I do spray base out of a rattle can. Because it's huge and the effort of breaking out a rattle can pays off on stuff that size.)

I've used plenty of Liquitex mediums and things like flow aid and so forth and always found them to be good, but can't speak to their varnishes ... Varnish wise I use Vallejo Polyurethane Matt (Satin and Gloss available) which can be brushed or airbrushed. I gave up generally on rattle cans after a couple of bad experiences with frosting/clouding. I use the air brush for larger models or plastics and brush on for metal models in the hope I get a slightly thicker coat! (I find you need to work it in a little to break down bubbles and avoid too much buildup in any one place if brushing). Anyhow always had good outcomes with that stuff.

Yes, spray can does frosting, and in my case very often.

I tried to use varnish with airbrush but it got clogged very quickly as it dries very quickly.

Newest edition to my Undead Army. I like this model. Nice sculpt. It does remind me to that Nagash from Morley ( head that is ). Now I see that I've forgot to make pass on hair since I did catch it with yellow wash.

^Looks great! :) I'm not usually into vampires and the undead and such, but the colors really pop. Great choices. The gem looks great. The worm on the staff is darned cute. The blue skin and white hair is intriguing. Well done! You have a great eye.

Thank you,

I do like those ( I think I've mentioned before ) skeletons in different colours. Little hommage to Might & Magic.

Two Wraiths, little test of yellowish bone. Really do like the colour. Decided to try out Mournfang Brown ( Bestian Brown ) as solid, then two coats of solid Zamesi Desert ( Bubonic Brown ). After that little by little Zamesi Desert with White Scar. I think I should go repaint all skeletons because, I really don't like how they look now. But then again...

Cheers,

In my opinion, this yellowish bone responds better to other colours than that more white bone.

This is take 2 of making Warhammer Quest tiles. First attempt ended in disaster. Acrylic inks were too old and they started to act funny, so I throw them away and bought few cheap acrylics ( Amsterdam Standard Series ) and try to do it again ( as my uncle replied to his student, "You can try cake in bakery, on exam you're either going or not going" hehe ).

So this is my second attempt.
First I did large one. Simply with tracing paper I took measures of Objective Room, just squares. Then I draw cracks and all that with coloured pencil. Wash it with diluted Neutral Grey just to make illustration board dirty. Then gradually putting more and more paint. After few layers of acrylics I back up drawing with coloured pencil so I don't lose it. Few washes of Paynes Grey on corners and cracks. Then from Neutral Grey gradually adding more and more white.
Second tile, the corridor was made in same manner except I used more coloured pencils ( browns ) on the edges and then, here and there highlights just to make it more 3D. On that coridor tile I simply trace cracks from standard WHQ tiles just to speed up the process. Varnished them both with satin varnish.
My light and shadow play isn't good at all ( Like my car's driveshaft, there's too much play hehe ) . Will work on that.

I think it looks nice and with more layers could look really nice.

Thank you.

Will get back to the Undead. Of course with few exceptions but my plan is to finish Undead till the end of the year. Then again, I really like that yellowish bone so I'm thinking of repainting all skeletons in that combo :? Got feeling that I'm chasing my tail with this army, I'm.
