Michaels 25mm WFB Stuff...

The bald dude leading the centre regiment and the hammer guy at the front of the army shot are some of my favourite empire sculpts. Can't wait for you to paint those. The army's gonna look damn sexy when finished.

I am saving the 2 lone models until last. I need to be at my best for those dudes!! I have a plan for my general, but it involves painting in a way I have not ever done, so need to ponder and plan.

I guess it depends how it became black - treated, ie bluing and so forth or painted. I would guess for the latter you'd be after a more matte finish maybe with chipping to telegraph "metal" and for the former maybe some of the darker metallics and some hints of blue?

AH, bald dude (as seen him MIchael's avatar) isn't an empire sculpt. Count Smiorgan Baldhead, Sea-lord of the Purple towns and friend of Elric of Melnibone, in his role as a incarnation of the Eternal Companion (each Eternal champion has a companion.. Moorcock is a bit weird at times (he did the one story I think he should NEVER have been allowed to write) ... alot of them like Elric fighting destiny while at the same time, the Eternal Champion and Companion are part of destiny).

anyway.. I think it was one of the sculpts that Citadel did a ... iffy thing with and just scrubbed the name to reuse it.. techinally, okay as they are there sculpt but.. well.. complex legal maybe.

They look great. One thing I'm really liking about them is you've kept them coherent looking without going full on uniform on them; some have very little (if any?) yellow, other has a yellow shirt and third one yellow and one green sleeve etc. Makes them look more of a ragtag group of individuals instead of perfectly equipped and trained soldiers.

Thanks the general theme is there, yellow and green for normal Stirlanders, with some white and green for Stir River Patrol.
Just a mish mash of borrowed, begged and home made uniforms.

"You want to join the Counts army? You get your gold crown when you come back in his colours"

They are a follow on from when I did a few as my Mordheim warband.
"Martyn's Red Cocks."

The idea of the warband was a group of deserters/abandoned/retired Stirland soldiers who followed their old Sergeant off to the ruins for gold and glory.
So they had a variety of uniforms.
To make them part of Martyn's men they needed something red, so that was their accent colour.

That 'theme' just sort of carried over when I decided to use the models for WFB.

I think the black hats and red accents help uniform them?

Except for Anatole Bucheron, the Brettonian Holzfaller, he sticks out a bit.

...borrowed, begged and home made uniforms.
Beg, borrow and... DIY? Or just stirlander's way of saying stolen? Sorry man, couldn't resist.

In any case, the way you've executed that idea works excellently and is just how it should be done IMHO. Soldiers wearing common colours to tie them together but not having actual uniforms, guys from river patrol along regular soldiers instead of their own unit and so forth makes them look more interesting and break the monotone. It also gives a feeling of either some casual disarray or maybe lack of able soldiers (which kind of suits the theme of Empire being constantly at war with multitude of enemies, neighbouring provinces included!), so that regiments might have been merged where fallen guys had to be replaced, or to include some more expertise along the newly enrolled greenhorns.

Opportunities for storytelling pretty much write themselves here, and just by the way you chose to paint them.
This is pretty much the polar opposite to my old mordheim averlanders that I, for some unknown reason, painted wearing the same boring uniforms of quartered black and yellow. Hard to give much identity to them at all when at glance they could all be the same man.

Anyways, looking forward to seeing how your flagellants turn out!

Thank you so much for the response, it means a lot.

The Fleglers will be fairly dull, being black robes.
But that is part of the allure to me, just 5 models with only a few colours on them and nothing complicated.

Though I have a bout of Nurgles Rot so it could be a while yet, which is annoying.
Not enough donations in Shallyas coffers I think.

I prefer the flagellants from Holy Grail.. replace whips with giant books ^_^
(oh,.. having flash back to the novel 'Colony' by Rob Grant.. where the science officer 'Trinity Peck', is a flagellant when she thinks he goes against her religion.. something the ship's priest approves off because he has cameras all over the ship and makes home porno films from the content... It's one of Rob Grant's best books.. and a bit as weird as you might think ^_^)
