Michaels 25mm WFB Stuff...

I can't recall how quickly it dries, here is a river I made for my old 15mm fantasy though using the stuff.

Is it any different to mod podge or acrylic medium though?

Oh yeah quite a bit. Clear when poured and it is not anywhere near as viscous. It flows very easily and spreads on its own. Self levels. Has no adhesive properties as such so it would be a terrible thing to try and seal stuff with or use as a glue like you can with mod podge.
It is definitely great for still water. As for rivers, there are potentially better products that are less liquid and more sculptable, but I have 2 bottles of this so it's what I am using.

So.

Essential step, block up the ends:

Knock off plasticine to the rescue.

Pour the water and squeeze it into the banks. The bottle has a nozzle and is quite squeezy, it took at best 90 seconds to squeeze this in.
I used about 2/3rds of the bottle.

I used a cocktail stick to burst a few bubbles and to coerce it into the banks where it had not flowed due to scatter/tufts etc.

Also my table is bent and the middle is higher than the ends, hence the paper to raise the ends of the river.

With trees so you can see that it reflects the scenery nicely.

Now we wait...

I am going to suggest that my table is both on the wonk N to S and E to W.
So when I add the second layer I will flip the river around and hopefully that will balance it out...

Also I moved it to my main desk as that foldable table was well on the wonk.

Whilst I wait and take advantage of my wife and daughter being away the weekend (though the Mo In Law is still here), I am making some nw roads.
I have 2 main goals, the first being to make a road that can be used with the river:

And a road that spans the width of the table in as few pieces as possible, turns out that is 2 sections, plus I have some left over.
I have also made these the same width as my existing roads, but as I no longer have the paint used for the original roads I am not sure how well they will match up.

The matching up isn't necessarily a problem. The roads could have been made at different times, or resurfaced and repaired?

So.

I completely mucked up the river.
What happened?

SATURDAY

1: My surface was not flat and the water was thicker in some areas than others, this meant when I was checking and I saw one end was ready to texture the rest (majority was not).

2: I thought I textured the water by gently brushing a brush along it, this turned out not to be the case and I ended up making quite obvious brush marks in the water.
In trying to then use a wet wipe (this it turns out is the thing to use) to smooth the thinner area back it just sort of made a right mess.

3: Waiting for the thicker area to dry I waited and used the the wet wipe and whilst not terrible it did not look the same as the other area.

4: I waited until it was all mostly dry and then tried to unify it by adding sort of waves/currents to make it seem like a fast flowing river and these crests/waves/currents would draw the eye from the underneath not being the same.

5: This worked, but it looked too much like the ocean.

So. I then decided to pour another layer on top to try and hide the waves/current.

6: This partially worked but the very obvious stippled wavey texture was still visible.

During this I was making my roads and when the second coat of the roads was dry I realised I had used the incorrect colour...

I called it a day and sat down to watch Enola Homes 3 as I quite liked the first 2 in a cheesy nothing to do with Conan Doyle kind of way.

7: It was the worst of the 3 and I was quite bummed by the whole day.

SUNDAY:

I have repainted the roads, vanished them and flocked the edges.

The river is god awful and were it not for the money spent on the tufts/banks I would bin it and start over.

8: But, I have repainted the whole river, thus making the 1.5 bottles worth of liquid water invisible and pointless.
I still have these crest/waves/currents and short of starting again there is not much I can do so I have tried to highlight them a bit and make them sort of choppy current.

It is currently a very mat flat river.
The effect it has at the moment could be achieved by some thinly spread Polyfilla.

The plan is to add a couple of coats of gloss varnish and hope that does the trick.

There are lessons to be learnt for sure.
If using Vallejo Still Water, make sure the river model is properly flat, this stuff flows and will highlight any wonkiness.
If you get it right, use a wet wipe to gently dapple the stuff to make an uneven surface rather than trying to brush it.
Or.
What I suspect would work, let it go completely dry, flat and level, and add add the texture with gloss varnish on top.

I will post an picture of it when done.
I suspect were it not for the nice 15mm river I did years ago I would not be as bummed, but this just does not look as nice...

How frustrating. :(

Anything that comes up with Millie Whatserchops these days I pick something else. I rode Stranger Things out cos I liked a lot of the rest of the cast but I cannae stand her.
