Manic's Slow Skaven Project

when I was younger, despite what I think my gateway games were being Heroquest and Battle Masters (and space crusade and Space Hulk), none of which had Skaven (I didn't have Advanced Heroquest), I was for some reason drawn to them as the only army I really collected. While I think I wanna get a couple of armies done up in the end, Skaven are kinda my first army and the ones I really want to get done ^_^

latest 3 stormvermin gotten from @Macmod1
I think I haven't got photos of my all Stormvermin yet but I now have 18 out of 20. I do kinda have some models which could complete it but need some work and I'm not quite sure but that's fine.

My Stormvermin have a regimential like nature with all of them wearing Red hats/helmets/whatever you call them things and a light blue area with a S in white. Thie middle one does have this S badge but it's on the shoulder you can't see ^_^;

Had tiny prolem with the first one which is why the left foot is a bit raised.. but it's fine.

Might still do a couple of tweaks but finally pretty happy with this:

Skaven Rat Golem. For people who don't know or remember, I'll do a post on my blog thing next week and hopefully some better photos.

and from a trade with @Mostyn, Gutter, Stormvermin with 2 handed halberd

since this image, I have added a bit of silver on the studs on the purple hood. the helmet is staying red cause when you paint that kinda thing, you paint the bolts ^_^

this puts my Stormvermin regiment up to 19 out of 20

Another case of photo doesn't look quite as good as real life cause of zoom in but Lord Skrolk of Clan Pestilens. I had this figure as a kid and the paint job was awful. barely even a paint job. So stripped it and redid. annoyingly, looks like I need to touch up a couple of bits, so I might do that, but otherwise, this is far better then my old one.

The book image isn't really as bad as I expected, though not fantastic cause... who can paint that small? I think the studio version they cheat with a paste job but I guess some can paint that well and that small ^_^; I was tempted to just do up a picture and past it on cause you wouldn't really be able to tell if I got it as a high enough DPI but.. didn't wanna do that.. Wanted to atleast give it a damn good go.

The Base really annoys me though. I wanted to give it something special, as he is a special character, and I thought as a plague monk, go for a plaguey base.. couldn't figure out how to do that one a 20mm base when soo much was covered by the figure. So I just used a tea and flock mix for some dirt ground. fair enough cause you don't want a base that outshines the figure.

I always thought that kept trying to downplay Skaven connection to Chaos. They were the Skaven: Chaos Ratman after all. 3ed Armies says "Skaven are the children and Servants of Chaos". Over time (though kinda early) they worshipped the Chaos dæmon God 'The Horned Rat', who in 4ed giant what is said to be his only Dæmon, The Vermin Lord.

In 3ed, they were able to have chaotic attributes. To my knowledge, I would say only 2 figures were ever released which really show any of these. Thrott the unclean, had an extra arm. He later became a special character in 4ed. And Boneripper, a Mutate Rat Ogre.. again, with a third arm.

Looking in the loft for some stuff, I found SOME stuff I wanted but not quite, but did come across where some other stuff was.. including the 2ed Blood Bowl. I know it wasn't complete when I got it and inside was.. maybe a team worth of figures, not quite sure. Most plastic humans (but not the ones which DID come with the base set.. odd.. in fact, I think it was more 3ed box set.. doesn't matter) but metal which I took as Star Players from the 2ed star players (also a flier with new news on star players, but didn't include all the ones they released. Also I took them as Star Players cause they looked more fancy then the normal metal players).. Of the four, There is Withergrasp Doubledrool, the Human Mutant Blitzer.. (really? more Chaos to my mind), Barik Farblast, Dwarf lineman with Bazuka, a human I don't recognise (looks Bret with a large helmet though Looking up, appears to be third edition Griff Oberwald) and the fourth, in the light, looked very interesting.. A Mutant Skaven but I didn't recognise it.

Now, Blood bowl second edition DID have a skaven Mutant star player.. just a skaven with 3 arms. But this wasn't it.. Getting it into better light, It's Slarga Fourstrike, Mutant Beastman Lineman. a Beastman with 4 arms. What type of Beastman? No glue.. doesn't look goat, which is good.. infact. looks likely ratty, but not quite Skaven.. Here is a photo from Lost minis:

No tail, but kinda ratty.. or mutant ratty.. Not sure what kinda beast. Wolf maybe? but nose is wrong.. But I looked at it.. and thought 'Add a tail, it's a mutant Skaven!'.. first problem.. figure undamaged (well, missing tab which was clipped off..) don't really wanna butcher a decent figure.. but I'm kinda figuring.. what the hell.. I'm just sticking (maybe a bit of pinning) a tail.. that doesn't do much harm.

Okay, it's only an arm mutation, but still. While 4ed removed the idea of Champions being solo, as they could only be in a regiment, Chieftains could be solo and you can have a bunch of them. Again, 4ed also removed chaos mutations from Skaven, as I said before trying to remove the chaos side more and more), I'm doing stuff up which can be used in 3ed or 4ed on the whole, so it's fine with me ^_^

^_^ that's some of the old citadel ones. Technically far smaller then a capybara, which I believe is the largest rodent around.. Haven't thought much about them since the 90s (the Capybara's). I kinda prefer my big boys though (which are probably the right size for Wolf Rats in 3ed, which were missing from 4ed ¬_¬)

Never played Mordheim so I have no clue about the size of a warband for it or anything.

no, not bad.. I can see him having some trouble but.. old school Rat men aren't that hard to find depending on the equipment loadout, easy to get the old ones second hand at a far price.. pity they are resin or I might think about it but.. I'll probably have to give them a pass in favour of just getting the metals you can get at a few different companies
