• Welcome to the Golden Gobbo painting competition. If you'd like to read some of the ancient history you can on the Realm of Chaos 80s blog.

This competition is held some years and you'll find threads here describing how to enter and when the competition is running (typically after BOYL each year).

Other than the fame and wonderment of your peers there is often a prize kindly donated and you'll have the wonder of being awarded badges for your profile here.

GG 2026 Golden Gobbo Painting Experience 2026

This thread is part of the Golden Goblin painting competition 2026. Please see the entry thread for full details.
Wotcha chaps!

Yes, it's that time again. Golden Gobbos are on!

A bit of a difference this year, let's try it and see. In the spirit of this being a FORUM and being good for what FORUMS are FOR- The documentation of a process with interaction and inspiration from other members.

This time I would like all entrants to create a thread in a section of the forum of their choice and put a link to that thread here as they enter. The purpose of said thread is to document your hobby journey with that figure. The obvious thing is to record the painting process, but as there are many aspects to the hobby you may prefer to paint your model first, then document a series of games played with it. You may decide to document the task of obtaining a particular figure. You may decide to sculpt something entirely from scratch and document that. Whatever you choose should feature as its main subject the following-

ONE model on a regular-sized GAMING BASE appropriate to it ( MDF, home-cut and resin bases are OK but must be one of the regular gaming base sizes, no foot square dioramas! You can mount your base on a plinth if you like.). Small vignettes/dioramas, terrain, big monsters etc. are ok provided you can make them fit on any regular sized gaming base. That in itself is a challenge!

How long have I got?

By midnight on the 20th December your thread should be ready for 'judging'.

How should I label my thread?

Call it whatever you like, but use the GG 2026 forum prefix (little drop down before the title, see below) for the thread. Then post a link to it in this thread!

How does judging work?

On the 21st I will create a voting thread on this forum board. This voting thread will have a gallery and links to all the threads. Members of the forum can cast two votes for their favourite entry, most votes wins. One vote should be for the painted miniature they like best, the other for the thread they found the most fun/interesting/engaging throughout the process. Voting will close at midnight on the 31st December to give everyone a chance to catch up on reading over the holidays. The winner will be announced in January.

Good luck everyone!

Let’s goooooo!
(I’ll pick something Nurgle-adjacent if it comes in the mail for the next week; if it doesn’t, I need a plan B).

EDIT
My plan B:

I've got a model I could use for this - a Great Unclean One I got as a Christmas present for my buddy. It'll give me incentive to actually work on the thing. It's currently just staring at me intimidatingly. I hope my skills are up for this.

Sounds great! I *should* be able to get the 1st PigBro ready for this💪
Great model, @Tex would you like me to split your PigBro posts out into a separate thread for easier GG tracking?
a Great Unclean One
Awesome, looking forward to seeing which version. It's one of the few models where I actually rather like all variations of it (got an original and a Forge World one myself)

@Tex I've done that - new thread is here: https://forum.oldhammer.org/threads/a-waaagh-or-oink-for-golden-gobbo.40622/, obviously feel free to rename it as you see fit (if you can't just nudge me with a more witty name and I'll do it). Wasn't sure if the 'new base' post was the base for this mini or another so left that in the main thread. Just should if I've moved anything that seems out of context, etc.
Now I see what you mean:lol: Those are pics of some mushrooms I had just found in the woods: what's better than finding inspiration and a good meal at once?

Sorry to bother you, but would it be possible to move the posts from pages 19-20 of the main thread, as well? They contain the beginning of the conversion work and the backstory for the project. If it's too much of a hassle, I'll just copy and paste the relevant content.

Hmm.. I'll have a think. It's screaming out to be the restoration of this fella, but I'm not sure I'll have time. Might have to be less ambitious. Stage 1 will be shot blasting six inches of gloss varnish and enamel paint of it. Anyone got a bucket of acetone?

For acetone I bought my last lot from MouldLife as I needed some self skinning foam and their price (for acetone) seems to be better than CFS who are often my normal go-to for such things typically. Otherwise Neill's is another place I use for such things (similar price to MouldLife). At worst if I've run out it's the chemists for a small bottle, but obviously being a man I normally need to buy my nail varnish remover in 5L man sized bottles ;)
