• Welcome to the Golden Gobbo painting competition. If you'd like to read some of the ancient history you can on the Realm of Chaos 80s blog.

This competition is held some years and you'll find threads here describing how to enter and when the competition is running (typically after BOYL each year).

Other than the fame and wonderment of your peers there is often a prize kindly donated and you'll have the wonder of being awarded badges for your profile here.

GG 2025 Golden Gobbo '25

Rechgrindle - Warrior Maiden of Dim Ponn the Unholy Grimace

Here's my Golden Gobo entry. Rechgrindle is from Specialty Set SS3 (v2) The Knights of Chaos (1983). The miniatures were designed my John Blanche and, I believe, sculpted by the Perrys. The box insert containing fluff and rules for Warhammer 1st ed. was penned by Rick Priestly. (The scan was borrowed from Eldritch Epistles blog)

Cheers Eric. The shield is sculpted, so it was just a case of colouring it in.

I was going to post that I finally decided on a mini to enter and someone already posts their finished entry! 😱

In the end I decided to paint this 6th Ed. Wurrzag sculpted by Mark Bedford, mainly because I want to paint one of the boars of that era, though I'll have to sculpt it a new tail since the original is lost; and will be a fun Orktober/GG project

I've only finished early because a) life got too busy last year and missed the deadline, and b) insomnia.

Ok, here I go.

I hope you like the colours and the layout, I talked a bit more about it here and added more pictures and close-ups.

Here is my miniature,, as promised it's a Bob Olley beastman of Tzeentch from 1989. He has an earlier citadel shield that looks a lot like a pink horror and screams Kev adams to me, but I can't be sure.
I have a large collection of chaos stuff and painting this one was a pleasure. More Chaos it is then 20251009_170426.jpg

That is really nice. Colours are smooth and the base is fantastic too. The more I see of Mr Olley's beastmen the more I realise they're pretty good and don't seem to suffer from the pockmarked faces he usually went for. Awesome work.

Nicely blended, he looks a bit stoned/high too, which seems fitting.

I’ve always been a believer that painting competitions demand the highest quality of figure to try and distract, as far as possible, from my questionable paint job.
Hence, I present to you my entry: Steve the dwarf.

A monopose plastic dwarf, to be precise, from the Warhammer Fantasy Regiments set. His hobbies include not ranking up and staring moodily into the middle distance whilst day dreaming about elves, digging deep holes or fighting goblins.

And I know it’s traditional after painting a figure to say, ‘I think Steve’s a great sculpt’ or perhaps ‘I wasn’t sure at first, but have grown to love Steve.’ Well I still think Steve and his identical twins were the worst figures in the box and painting him hasn’t changed my opinion on that from when I was about 12 and first had the dwarfs from a shared box. I think I am most irked, however, by the fact that even on a 25 mm base the figures still don’t rank up (unless everyone marches at a 45 degree angle to where they are going or you are a firm believer in using your colleagues chest as an axe holder).

Anyway, Steve says hello. 😊

And equally importantly I now only have Janet the Dark Elf to paint for a full set of six. And time to work out what to paint for Market Day (yay!)

Classic figure. Alot of old plastics (and some metals) were a nightmare to rank up. I think that's one reason while they did both horizontal and diagonal slotta bases. And them nice ones with the two knock outs for which ever way you wanted them ^_^

Really need to get happy about the figure I got painted up for this.. I'm just debating if he is finished or not..
