• Welcome to the Golden Gobbo painting competition. If you'd like to read some of the ancient history you can on the Realm of Chaos 80s blog.

This competition is held some years and you'll find threads here describing how to enter and when the competition is running (typically after BOYL each year).

Other than the fame and wonderment of your peers there is often a prize kindly donated and you'll have the wonder of being awarded badges for your profile here.

GG 2025 Golden Gobbo '25

I’ve always been a believer that painting competitions demand the highest quality of figure to try and distract, as far as possible, from my questionable paint job.
Hence, I present to you my entry: Steve the dwarf.

A monopose plastic dwarf, to be precise, from the Warhammer Fantasy Regiments set. His hobbies include not ranking up and staring moodily into the middle distance whilst day dreaming about elves, digging deep holes or fighting goblins.

And I know it’s traditional after painting a figure to say, ‘I think Steve’s a great sculpt’ or perhaps ‘I wasn’t sure at first, but have grown to love Steve.’ Well I still think Steve and his identical twins were the worst figures in the box and painting him hasn’t changed my opinion on that from when I was about 12 and first had the dwarfs from a shared box. I think I am most irked, however, by the fact that even on a 25 mm base the figures still don’t rank up (unless everyone marches at a 45 degree angle to where they are going or you are a firm believer in using your colleagues chest as an axe holder).

Anyway, Steve says hello. 😊

And equally importantly I now only have Janet the Dark Elf to paint for a full set of six. And time to work out what to paint for Market Day (yay!)
Hi Steve! You give me hope for when I eventually get around to painting your siblings. Made me laugh, my clan colours are the same, only the red's on the left and blue on the right.

I've been out for work all the week and didn't want to forget about posting this. I love everything about that model: The non-metallics, the grass, the eyes, the red nose, the subtle lightning on the rear chainmail... Congratulations.

Just in time for Orctober, I managed to finish my final member and legendary founder of Ruglud's Armoured Orcs. And so, fittingly I present to you as this year's entry:

Gudruk Bonechewer

(Or Ruglud himself, as some might contend in one of the oldest fluff-vs-crunch conundrums in the history of the Old World - but to me he's always been Gudruk).
He's actually a bit on the scrawny side, so to compensate he got a nice heroic rock to pose on, and a completely outrageous sword for good measure!

NOW THAT'S A HOT SWORD!

That's flippin' awesome. I love it all from the lighting effect which is really well done (not that orcs normally go in for that sort of thing!) to the tiny mushrooms on the base.

Flippin' 'eck. He's gorgeous. That sword is especially sexy.
My mate had the Ruglud boxed set when we were kids, but sadly we used Humbrol paints and ruined the lot of 'em...

Thanks! Yeah, I'm really happy with how that turned out - not, as you say - a technique that I use often on O&G.

Thanks! Yeah, my lot has been through some abuse too - traded them from a schoolmate who had already painted them, painted straight over that on a large bunch, and then they've been languishing in a box for 20 years or so before I finally stripped them from all their old layers...

Yeah! And you've gone for two eyes as well. :)
Damn right! They may be wearing Chaos armour and all, but no damn cyclops mutant is going to lead my Boyz, no matter what the sculpt might suggest...
Some deep shadows and a bit of artistic freedom there 🙂

wait.. He was meant to be Ruglud? so.. was the real Ruglud not meant to be Ruglud? ... also, never noticed champion Gudruk was meant to have one eye.. might have to check my figure went I get around to dealing with it...

Oookay, so... The colour text (fluff) on the original box stated that as the unit celebrated their first victory Ruglud was limited to drinking soup from a straw because he could not get his helmet off - which would suggest he is the figure with the close fitting helmet (and big sword). But in the stat blocks (crunch) on the very same box, Ruglud is equipped with 2 hand weapons, while Gudruk has a two-handed sword - thus the conundrum! As an extra layer of confusion, the base tabs, as far as I recall have names which are somewhat close to Ruglud and Gudruk - but not identical - which has led to further theories as to which was supposed to be which 🤪

Ah, but flavour text describes Ruglud when he wasn't a leader of the group then after they were able to get the gobbo for tea, he was made leader. So I see no problem ^_^
