Zog's models

Nice ogres, Zoggin' - really nice! While they may look a bit rough around the edges, you're probably putting out two finished large ogres in the time it takes for me to base coat a single 28mm model. =) And the end product is not THAT different. I'm still struggling to find my "minimal acceptance level" in regards to my painting.

Thanks heaps mate! :) got through some goblins, a squig and a mutant this afternoon, so your estimate of my speed mightn't be too off  Actually, I love painting "ogre sized" models for that reason. Not much more effort than painting a human, but you really feel like you've accomplished something. More ogres to come!

As for your other point, for the last couple of years I've decided I'd rather get models finished and on display, rather than a handful of half-finished models in boxes. Toning down the quality and knowing when to put a model down have made me enjoy the hobby so much more. Oddly, this is something my old animation boss taught me! The whole "put it down, take a step back, rather than fiddle for another hour for little better result" attitude.

My real "minimal acceptance level" moment came though, while reading the blog of Slayer Sword 1990/2013 winner David Soper's blog. Incredible work he does, the kind of models I come back to and just stare at. However, rather than wish I could paint as well as he can, I realised I'm happy to admit I would never have the patience or put in the effort for true display models. I think it was the number of hours he said he spent on the lizardmen skink shaman. To be honest, I'd rather speed through an army or two in that time, take a few photos and get to know lots of models!

Anyway, I hate to post without a photo, so here's another bit of painting log catch-up. Apologies for letting the year 2000-odd Nurglings through, but they kind of show another attempt at finishing models I'd otherwise never finish. The scenery pieces are of a suitable vintage though!

While painting a giant (which I hope will be my next update), disaster struck!

"At times like this, I guess all you can do is laugh" - Marge Simpson

Actually, I didn't get any on my clothes, it didn't ruin any models and I was able to get most of it back into the pot. :)

I also finished the "unit filler/make terrain more interesting" pieces.

Had you not already said so yourself I'd have said the paint spill was hardly disaster. I genuinely have consigned a few models to the repaint bin with similar disaster, and I ruined a bunch of clothes that way in the 80s and early 90s. I quit having so much trouble with that when I quit painting directly out of the jar. A brilliant discovery, that. Now I usually damage miniatures by dropping them. Did spill CA+ all over a favorite cruiser model I had on the bench for repair and maintenance. Managed to avoid a full repaint, but it was . . . frustrating.

Lovely work. Glad you were able to salvage even some of your paint.

Thanks symphonicpoet. Yes, my paint mishaps have almost stopped, and this did take me back to my "always from the pot" days. I usually use a wet pallet or apply to the cutting board and drybrush (as seen in the pic), so it's rarely a problem. Actually, that's why I found it so amusing! If anything, it was always going to be a metallic paint, since I often still use them straight from the pot. Yeah, I was happy to salvage most of the paint, but it's a currently available colour anyway. There are one or two colours where there would be tears if I even spill one drop!

Here's one of the promised Ogres:

I get annoyed at discontinued colors, but I've changed paints often enough now I try not to sweat it. (Try being the operative word.) The entire line of paints I used during childhood (Floquil) has been discontinued. Makes me a little sad as they really were great paints. Much better than what I use now in many ways, but a little more trouble to work with and quite a bit more expensive. (I've actually found myself reconsidering enamels a bit lately, as they really do have some advantages.) Anyway, lovely ogre as well. Looking forward to more.

Same here. I used to really stress over it, but no longer. I just go with something close enough. Luckily I paint mostly rabble armies anyway so a change doesn't hurt! The only instance I'd really stockpile one colour is in, say, a Space Marine army where I want every model the same. Actually, my biggest problem is remembering what colours I used months later! I'm now trying to make a note online as I post photos, but perhaps just a pad and pen next to the painting desk might help (or address book so I can "look up" different modes! G for goblin skin and so on :)

great ogre

what range is that from? Olley sculpt?

Thanks! Olley, you bet. Like the archer I showed earlier, it's from Ral Partha. I'm amazed at how many of his ogres are still about, mixed between the Ral Partha Europe and Iron Wind Metals ranges. They are so cheap for what they are, too.

http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/i ... h=37_39_49

I got a ton of different Olley ogres from them a while ago, I must finish them. I have another crossbow so with the archer I can do a unit of missile ogres finally. I've seen another archer he did that looked like a conversion of the same model/dummy. I've forgotten which company still sells it though, one of the much smaller companies.

Speaking of Ral Partha, here's a little more catch-up of recently painted models before I post stuff from last night:

I approached my Daemon Prince ("Karmoth" from Ral Partha's The Dark Eye range - http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/sh...17000-c-30_34/17043-demon-karmoth-p-1039.html) with the idea of it being quick to paint, something I'd get finished in a sitting or two. Otherwise, I could see it becoming another model I'd never get around to. I really wanted it to look more undivided than a substitute Keeper of Secrets. Like a fool, I ended up using purple anyway! I added orange to the fur stripes to make it more "magical", since without it, it looked too much like an animal/minotaur.

As said, I'm happy with it considering it was mostly just fast drybrushing!

Hi again, I finished three of the 15mm goblins for my effort i the "how to" thread elsewhere, which I plan on using as lesser goblins (or gnoblars alongside my ogres in modern WHFB). Good fun, and I like to think that they are a good example of looking for models in different places/ranges.

As shown here, they are about the size of snotlings when based individually.

Wow, you're really motoring through 2015 with great speed and some great models! That demon is really cool - inspired choice with purple and orange. Mutt's nuts, and all that! =)

Thanks phreedh!

Here's what's on my desk tonight. Hopefully I'll finish some (all?) tomorrow. A bit of a mix of models and scales.

Update time, I got the two orcs shown earlier finished. (Actually, I got all of the models finished, just not the bases...)

Kev Adams Heartbreaker Orc Boss re-released by Ral partha. Anyone know if the head at his belt is supposed to be someone? It just looks out of place to me with the glasses.

I'm pretty happy with them. I really think they look better in person. I usually love taking photos of finished models, but I think these look much better in natural light. The poor eyes on the champion I can surely blame on a little loss of detail from a poorly stripped model and not myself, right?

Updates from tonight's finished lot:

Any idea who this chap is? I forgot to check under the base before I started. I'm sure I used to know...

I have a whole lot of Epic daemons. I'm using 25mm bases so they can be used to fill out WHFB units as well as Epic.

Again, I hope to use these as both flesh hounds in Epic and as unit-filling bloodletters. Perhaps I could use two per one base in a "real" flesh hound unit, too?

More tiny daemons:

Silly me forgot to take a photo of them with the flamers.

(I also hadn't thought to glue the horrors two to a base and paint them both blue, representing the whole "kill one pink one, two blues ones" rule and background...)

Hi again. Not your usual Oldhammer post, but I hope people here like it. Some 15mm Dwarfs from (now) Ral Partha's Demonworld line. Originally I wanted to see if you could scale the bases down for half-distance WHFB, but 10mm is a little too small for them to fit/rank up. Very quick to paint up, I have enough for a unit to match my 15mm goblins. If I lost everything and had to start over, I would probably go for 15mm. Lots of options now, and I really like the Demonworld elves.

I imagine they'd be an easy way to buy up matching armies or scenario/campaign box forces for people happy to game with "lesser" models and just collect 28mm models for display.

I love the one pink leg on the blue horror!

Thanks! I thought he was cute.

Little update. Something different - an orc ship from my last Ral Partha order. I bought one each of the smallest ships for the orcs, empire and elves just to see how they look. A good resource for people wanting something other than chasing up Man o War models or Spartan's Uncharted Seas.

http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/shop/empires-c-135/

Actually, there's some buildings that might be of interest to Mighty Empires or 3D campaign map players?

Just a scale shot in case anyone's seen the models before but didn't know the size. Bear in mind that this is the smallest orc ship they make.

The models themselves are a little fiddly to glue. My poor attempt at holding it together with greenstuff can be seen at the base of the mast and the back of the sail.

Thanks heaps!

Continuing the small-scale theme, a couple of Ork dreadnaughts for my deathskull army:
