World Building

So I mentioned somewhere or other that my summer project was going to be finishing off a castle I built as a young-un. However upon getting my mitts on said castle it turns out I'd painted it already, presumably quite quickly for the game! Funny how we remember things. That left me a bit unsure how I am to proceed.

I gave it a dust (wow was it dusty) glued together the bits of snapped balsa wood (some still missing) and touched up the chipped plaster battlements with a little grey paint, but should I take it further? Should I leave it as it is - a bit of "painting/modelling history" from my youth? I don't generally strip and re-paint my old models (not that I have many of my old models).

I'm unlikely to actually use this castle in a battle (it not being that practical, but that mattered less when you're young). I could go full on and tidy up bad joins add new textures and rework it over fully creating something new. I could just re-flock the base and add some foliage to make it fresher (very faded). Something in-between? Hard to decide where to start and where to stop given I'm feeling quite nostalgic about my youthful model making :)

Some of the possible thoughts for rework: New flock/foliage; Starway to wooden structure by tower; Flagstone floor on parapets; Trapdoors in towers; Corner dressing stones on tower edges; Gloss varnish on the "moat"; Roof on the top tower; Fill gaps by arrow slits; Add some weathering; Re-flock the courtyard.

Anyhow a couple of pics of the "current" whilst I wonder about what I may end up doing. Better start with a more moody scene setting one where the castle looms out of the Reikwald forest ... our hero's salvation or not?

Then I suppose I should show it a bit more lit up. Gave me an excuse to get out all the trees (I'll see about doing a "forest" post showing them all).

Some examples of what is a bit more rough and ready and what I may or may not be dealing with:

I forget quite what the main lump of polystyrene was from. The castle walls are all just foam core. The battlements are made from plaster, I made a mould from plasticard and cast up sections that I then mitred and cut to fit, then glued the merlons (another mould) on top. The drawbridge works! I did do a Warhammer Siege castle map for it.

So we might see this castle again either with a full makeover or maybe just with some split and polish. I've started a topic about repainting old stuff so if you've any thoughts on your own old stuff or what I should or shouldn't do with the castle pop them over there in that thread! Ta.

Looks very moody in the top photos! Don’t think it is a bad layout, but could benefit from some more modern detailing and I would loose the moat? Having it on a rocky outcrop means a moat is superfluous?

I think I've settled on at least re-flocking the base. I did some gloss varnish on the water last night (and despite apparently re-activating (presumably) the PVA or something I had put down decades ago it seems to have dried clear again now. I think once those jobs are done I'll ponder again. Not quite sure it'll fit in my bag on the train up ... but :)

Do eet!!

Now since @Brother Meredith requested it a shot of all my trees (bar a handful I've got for putting on possible future projects and a load of conifers I will put on some mountain terrain one day) on one of my 4'×4' mats with one of the rather creased black sheets we use for Halloween screening. A selection of larger more scenic bases mixed in with a decent number of smaller clumps of three or so and then a handful of individuals. Quite pleased they are all done. Trees and orcs/undead (I lack humans) artfully arranged by my daughter.

Pretty solid bit of forest I think. I'd probably best start collection Wood Elves or something! :)

Then since I left everything out including my photography lights and phone my daughter decided my efforts needed a touch more atmosphere so I attach some more artistic shots of the orcs being set upon by those the forest long ago claimed ... enjoy.

I just drill mine into the plastic bases I use and support them with plasticine and superglue.
So far so good.
Though a bit of faff.

BUT. This time I ordered some trunks to stick onto my bases to make it easier. Hopefully.
