Where do people play?

I repost this from time to time, but I've always liked the idea of the Oldhammer Opponent Finder. I put myself on there years and years ago and I hope to convince more people to do so.

Link in the description above, but here it is plain, just in case:

That looks cool, but a lot of the links to those ppl are years and years old. Blogs last updated in 2012 and 2015.

The map hasn't been updated at least since we moved hosting and not for some time before. I copied the map code over when I took over the hosting just so it wasn't lost (although I wasn't sure about importing the data since it wasn't 1:1 with members). Originally I thought I might write my own "opponent finder" integrated into the forum software, hence the few fields you'll find in your account profiles that was a little more privacy focused! However realistically I'm not going to get round to it. My compromise will be to use one of these add-ons to at least provide a map once we upgrade to XFv2.3. I'll leave the rest: ie armies and arrangements to the normal forum systems and of course it goes without saying that it'll be on your own head if you end up arranging a game with a sweaty power gamer dropping crisps on your battlefield ...

I've heard of these people, but have never actually encountered one.

They still exist?
Goodness yes… when I played War Machine in Sacramento some 20 years ago there was even some moron who threatened his opponent with an actual stabbing. 😓 (i stopped playing strangers for a long time after seeing that nonsense)

There was a dude at the local games club who during board games tries to break the game by playing in a way via loopholes that makes it near impossible for anyone else to progress any further, he would declare quite loudly and with glee that "I am the bringer of chaos" and be happy he has ruined the game for the rest of us..

I don't go any more.

For some reason, I'm just thinking of a scene from a film I doubt many people will have seen but I enjoy.. "The Onion Movie" which... whoa, even if you know the only real trustworthy USA news source that is the Onion, this film had a rough time.. I mean, filmed in 2003. Finally released as direct to DVD in 2008. Meant to be released in the UK as 'The News Movie' but I was only able to get it on DVD via I think German one.. It's an old style Skit movie with a theme. Anyway, the bit I'm thinking about (if you haven't seen it) is where some people are playing a DnD like game (Wizards and Warbeasts) with some git who is one "I am so great, I come and just win!" and makes every one else have no fun.. when gets warped into the fantasy world where... yeah..
you can buy the film on youtube or something.

I was in Cambridge when I started doing Oldhammer

...now I'm in the far north of Scotland! Still, I go to Cambridge now and then and miss when we used to hang out occasionally as... erm... whatever our regional allied contingent of Oldhammerers was called!
I don't really know of a regional allied contingent of Oldhammerers around here... There's a few people I sometimes run into at the local gaming club, but mostly I just play and do hobby with the uni/RPG friends that I've managed to get into models

Well the core of the group back at the time was the brothers Erny and Snicket (still active and going to BOYL, still in the region but been away from Cambridge for a while) and Whiskey Priest who moved to Devon iirc. But it's good to know there are new people getting into things there now! Is the gaming club still the one in the scout hut over Chesterton way? I could never really get to the usual games night, but a couple of times played Oldhammer games when they had the open days on the weekend.

Does OGRE ring any bells for either of you? Reason I mention it is that I was living in North Hertfordshire when I joined this forum and Erny advised me to keep an eye out for OGRE meet up posts.

Yeah there's one down there and one at a school drama studio at the opposite end of town - I go to both every now and then but yeah, I can't often make it and there's not often much being played that I'm super interested in

Not heard of it but that sounds really cool.
