What's the highest price you've ever paid for a miniature?

When I go shopping on eBay I often set a target price per figure of generally around $3 a piece unless something really remarkable comes along. Certain things that are hard to come by (old school zombies, Dogs of War) I am willing to go higher, perhaps around $5 or more for a figure. I've recently paid $10 for one of the old Citadel Night Horrors winged vampires, but that's certainly an oddity. Granted this is approximately what GW would charge you for that figure if they were to produce it today but I still had to hem and haw for a bit before committing. I've seriously considered ponying up much more for figures that I really wanted, but I often talk myself out of it.

Not to make this sound like a place to confess how you're abusing your bank accounts to support the hobby...what is the highest price you've ever paid for a miniature and how does that compare to your target price per model? Specifically, non-monstrous or titanic models. Did you buy it new from a hobby shop or used online?

Re: What's the highest price you've ever paid for a miniatur

For non-monstrous models, I think the most I've ever paid is $18-20 each. But those are few and far between. Usually, much closer to the $3-4 range.

Re: What's the highest price you've ever paid for a miniatur

I bought a Games Day Wolfpriest off of ebay for $45 I think, I knew and know that that is a rip off but meh- I really wanted one.
That's the one time I've spent really dumb money on one little mini.

Talking Ebay, I've got to concur with ardyer here- 3 GBP or what's usually around $9 AUS is about the max I'll pay for most things with 2 pound or $6 being more common.
I might have gone around the $20 mark a couple of times I think.

Re: What's the highest price you've ever paid for a miniatur

I think I've only spent large-ish amounts for a small/human sized figure for the odd Genestealer hybrid or magus. The biggest hits have been for job lots and large models.

One thing to try is to ignore the fact that it's second hand, rare or even common, and just ask yourself if you really want/will paint the model and compare it to the price of a comparable new model. $10 to me may sound like too much for oop lead until I see a tiny Infinity, Malifaux, P. Press or whatever new model selling for the same amount. Whichever I know I'll get the most enjoyment out of.

Goes both ways, I know I've stopped myself buying old figures when I realise I'd rather support a small "boutique" one-person range or support Viingforge/Mirliton/Ral Partha selling old figures for less money, too.

(OK, as far as the most I've spent on one model, I'm actually just too scared to check my Paypal history just to see!)

Re: What's the highest price you've ever paid for a miniatur

I'm perfectly happy to spend £4-5 on a bog-standard mini. Rare or sought after figures, more. I confess I have a collection of unreleased figures and some of those are into the hundreds :)

Re: What's the highest price you've ever paid for a miniatur

Not really sure I recall what the highest figure I've paid but I do recall paying about twenty pounds (including postage)for the crossbow armed, Dark Elf, Coldone rider, Pre-slotta - has I didn't have one and I hadn't seen one come up on ebay before, let me a sure you, I now have more than one and paid considerably less for the others.
AS for what is the most I've been prepared to pay - about eighty pounds for a pre-slotta troll, which again, I needed to make up the set, I didn't need to pay out that much, but I was prepared to! 8-) 8-) 8-)

Re: What's the highest price you've ever paid for a miniatur

I average £1 for foot and £4 for cavalry, for both slotta and pre-slotta, but there have been exceptions where I've paid a bit more to finish a unit off. The only real moment of madness I can think of was on ebay paying £12 for one of the rarer Citadel Undead Samurai sculpts that was probably only worth about £4. To rub my nose in it his legs snapped off at the knees when I was stripping paint off him. Oh well you've got to laugh..

With 28mm models I expect more for my money because I can get hold of Ral Partha and Grenadier models I really like, new, for peanuts.

I recently paid £20 for an Epic Forgeworld Stormsword super heavy tank. They don't turn up often and when they do they tend to come in a pack of three, averaging £50 for the three. Even so it still felt like a lot of money for what it was.

Re: What's the highest price you've ever paid for a miniatur

Rank and files, I'l look for around 3£ and may spend up to 5 from time to time for specific ones. I could be ready to go to 15£ for "hard to get" ones like some confrontation models, mk1 termies and such and of course bigger models like zoats, robots etc (though I've never paid more than 15£ fo rany of these.

I'm actually realising th emost expensive model (apart from kits) must have been the 25th WH anniversary model of Harry the Hammer (that was 25€ or something ).

Re: What's the highest price you've ever paid for a miniatur

I try to keep rank and file down to a max of £2.50, but usually try to pay less. For a few individuals, mainly scenario figures and the last orc villager I needed, I've gone as high as £8. My most expensive single model is ambull that I got for £12.

What he said... though the £2.50 limit have been very hard to keep when I shifted to collecting Rogue Trader rather than fantasy models.

Re: What's the highest price you've ever paid for a miniatur

I've paid three figures in the past for a few unreleased figures that I really *really* wanted, but usually a tenner tops. Mind you, I'm currently on the hunt for more Space Slann though, so any ideas of budgetary constraint have gone out of the window.

On a semi-related front, I was trying to price up my collection (for insurance purposes) the other day, but gave up when it went over £50k and I was nowhere near finished. Kind of frightening when you think about it. Although it's not really at risk of theft, it the place went up in smoke, it'd be a nightmare. Though I guess I could weigh in the big lump of molten lead that would end up in the foundations for a fair amount of cash..

Re: What's the highest price you've ever paid for a miniatur

About two or three years ago I bought an original Heinrich Kemmler so that should give you some idea about the most expensive. But then once the bills are paid and some saving is done the rest is just numbers, a few numbers less one month and I have something very special. A fortunate position I know.

Usually I buy much cheaper but I did the greater part of my collecting in the 2000's when 80's miniatures were just yesterdays junk. I'm just filling in the special stuff these days so naturally that makes individual purchases a bit steeper. I have just got into collecting GWs Lord of the rings line, the modern stuff, I already have a good chunk of the 80's stuff. Anyway infantry is cheap at the moment but lots of the rarer characters go for quite a bit.

I might be able to help you out with that, I've got a load I need to shift. ;)

Sorry to go off topic, but is there a good place to look for that stuff (trading group etc.) or are you just buying on ebay? I ask because there's one specific model I'm after.

Which stuff? LOTR stuff? Do you play the game?

I'll PM you the list later, it's a big 'un, and on my home PC. I've got a load of Newhammer stuff to shift on, LotR being part of it.

Re: What's the highest price you've ever paid for a miniatur

I'm pretty impressed by some of the right budgets I see here.

I don't know whether it's the fact that in in the U.S., or that I am after RT rather than WFB, or a combination of the two, but I could never average something like the equivalent of £1.50 per model.

Unless I was buying large lots and getting lots of dreck along with what I did want.

Re: What's the highest price you've ever paid for a miniatur

I think the most I've paid was just over £100 UK but that was for an Armorcast Wahound Titan so I don't feel too bad.

As far as single character models I think it was of the order of £25 for a single character I wanted, usually £10 is my limit but I don't buy very regularly as I'm supposed to be thinning out my pile a bit.

Cheers

Re: What's the highest price you've ever paid for a miniatur

16£ for the "Amazon" rogue trader adventurer, really wanted that one badly.

/I'm not not counting bigger models.
