WFB 3rd Edition in 10mm

Hi.

I recently wanted to get back into mass battle fantasy gaming and my wife was keen to play some as well.

Back in the day I played WFB 3rd Edition.
When trying to work out what rules to use to get back into mass battle fantasy I had 2 options:

Try something new, force my aged brain to learn something and hope once learnt I actually liked it.
Use something I was familiar with and knew I liked.

This is the result:

Now, our house is small and our time is limited.
Whilst clearly 28mm is the way to go, either with old GW models and or many proxies, the lack of space for playing and storing would make this very tricky.
Then of course the time it would take me to paint at least 2 full armies and all the terrain needed.

So instead we went for 10/12mm to use instead.

We halved the base sizes and changed distances from inches to cm.

So what am I working on?

All in 10/12mm:

WFB 3rd Edition Dark Elves and Empire, these are my main armies.
I have started buying models for a number of smaller 1000 pt armies.
Orcs and Undead are being planned.

I am working on a sort of Mordheim lite, but using 10mm models.

Here are the most recent shots of the painted models/armies:

I will go into detail around some of specific units and what not in due course!

As I previously said, they look great. I think individually based 10mm figures would be a step to far for me though. Considered elements? The so-called 3-2-1 basing approach (i.e. some on bases of three, some on twos, some individually) should work for WFB.

P.S. Big fan of Mordheim & can see benefits to doing it in smaller scales. I look forwards to seeing what you come up with.

I did think about it, but that would take away some of the flexibility (not much, but some), plus I am not sure it would save much time.
Having painted a couple of strips I found them longer to do as it was hard to access the parts that were very close to the next model, quite often the model next to the one you are painting would simply be in the way.

But more importantly for me I feel like it would be cheating and this is as more about doing it 'right' than just getting it done.
Plenty do use the 3-2-1 and that is great, it is just not for me.

The Miniheim will be set in all sorts of terrain heavy features, not just a city.
I am not sure if the project will be a success, but I am hoping that the quickness of set up and play will mean it is a good 'quick let's play something' sort of game.

Here is a WIP of the town, though there is more to add and the layout is not yet finalised, more details to follow:

Oh, tiny Mordheim too? I am intrigued! You could really do some enormous setups in 10mm. Giant castles, walled cities, and great ruined cathedrals that look the part. Excellent! Looking forward to more of this. You could move stuff like this to the WIP thread, I think for future. Might make it more visible. :)

Interesting to see what you've done. When GW did the Warmaster game system I very nearly bought it, and still somewhat regret not getting an army or two for small scale epic battles. I've seen a few examples of "full size" Warhammer scaled down to ~10mm and it does seem to be a good size if you are space limited. Looking forward to following your ongoing adventures!

Maybe, there will be sharing of things that are complete too?
I could do several topics but would rather keep it in one place, easier to follow/avoid.

I am not a big fan of Warmaster, lacks some of the 'crunch' of WFB proper.
Cheers.

So one of the downsides with 10mm as WFB rather than Warmaster.
Warmaster infantry come on strips which would mean the individual models would need to be seperated where possible, that and warmaster can be pricey.

So I use other 10/12mm fantasy.
Most of the time this is ok, in many cases an orc is an orc.
The problem is the Empire, whilst clearly of a historical leaning much of the human fantasy does not have that Empire vibe.
So I have been buying historicals and converting them.
The most common conversion is to 3d print some feather and stick them on heads.
Then with an Empire paint job and an Empire banner they pass the test.

Here are some examples:

(not great paintjobs as they are rank and file and I have 2 armies to paint from scratch and just want to get them on the table)

Then with shield decals that I found online:

Though in some cases you can't get close enough and I had some figures sculpted and cast:

Hello sir, Geoff from GROGG announcing himself here.
Lovely work... seriously brilliant. Tiny is often much more satisfying... said the bishop to the nun.

Cheers!!

I like to accessorise my games, I always have.

For WFB I use dice that match the uniforms and have little unit cards with the actual models on them, and for romance, his and hers cheat sheets!

As for small things...

I find they do make it easier/cheaper/quicker to make terrain pieces:

I suppose it's a judgment call. I do a giant thread in the showroom of all my completed stuff and individual posts of works in progress. Folks, including myself, also post battle reports separately in that subforum. I can see where you're coming from, it's just different than the way I myself do it. That said . . . so's the 10mm, and that is FANTASTIC! ;) Wherever you post, keep up the good work. I'm loving all this stuff.

Thank you!

For when you absolutely positively have to blow the bloody doors off.

A historical cannon I converted.

Added feathers to the crew, greenstuffed the end of the barrel to chunk it up and the middle.
Greenstuffed a flaming skull onto the back end.
Barrels and water trough (can't let it build up too many heat points).
Some mantlet type things and a banner flying the Artillery School of Nuln so the enemy knows who is smashing them to a pulp.

More historical conversions:

So here is my unit of The Knights of the Black Rose.

The knights have heater shields, skull helmets, heavy armour, horse barding, lances and swords.
The models I bought did not have shields, or skull helmets and not all of them had barding or feathers/plumes.

I purchased some single shields from Pendraken and stuck them on.

I sliced the front off most of the helmets off and filed them flat.
Then I got some of my own 15mm skulls and carefully sliced the front of the skulls off and stuck that onto the knights heads.
Then I added wreaths or feathers or plumes.
I also greenstuffed the barding on the banner bearer and added skulls and hour glasses to the barding on the horses.

It was certainly a bit more involved than normal but they may well be my favourite unit.

nice warhammer in the first post.

i'd say they're pretty good, especially for 10mm.

that can't have been cheap.

Not too bad, just under £200 to get to a production mould.

I did used to sell 15mm models so have regular sculptors and mould makers.

I like the idea of 10mm version of 28mm games! I think that 28mm fits something like Inquisitor or Confrontation much better than WHFB and Rogue Trader.

I think RT as a small RPG style skirmish game is good, but for big battles then yeah, smaller wins, hence Epic doing so very well.
