WFB 3rd Edition in 10/12mm

Here is my favourite unit, this took far too long to paint, but I think it was worth it.
This was also my first time ever of using a unit filler.
I was adverse to the principal for a long while as many seem to be terrain which to my mind makes no sense that a piece of terrain follows a unit around, so I tried to make my unit filler portable.

Helblitzen.
The backbone of any Empire army, this unit of Halberdiers is the most distinguished of Stirland and has the honour of carrying the Elector Counts Battle Banner.

Lead by Heinz Krause who carries a shield blessed by a Sigmarite Battle Priest and wielding the mighty warmace ‘Zerschmettern’ they march into battle proud and unshakable.
Zerschmettern is imbued with a mighty power, such that when the need is most desperate, Heinz can call upon its ancient strength and deliver a blow of such immense force that nothing can withstand it.
Only on three occasions has the need been so great to call upon its might, but each time it has not failed to crush its target, so is Heinz known by his lads as ‘The Blacksmith’.

Otto Venkel, like Heinz is a veteran of many battles and it is his sworn and most sacred duty to carry the Elector Counts Battle Banner.
The banner carries the Royal Crest of Haupt-Anderssen and since it has been in the charge of Otto, the unit has never been been defeated in combat, even when outnumbered and indeed outmatched, the flag and all it signifies drives the unit onward with such force that the enemy are always pushed back.

Young Karl Der Schwoff is the units drummer and such is his exemplary skill with the drum, which is said to be covered in the skin of slain Undead Troll, that they are ever marching true and bravely, and as long as the drum drum drum is heard, the unit will never falter or back down.

Now having said all that, and despite what an elite unit they are, they are after all still Stirlanders.
Many of the lads just signed up for the promise of a warm meal each day, more than many got when working the vineyards or logging in The Great Forest.
As such, they guard their stores very closely, so much so that they will often bring it into battle with them, rather than risk it left with the baggage train.
Of course being prudent lads, they have a small banner that stays with the food which should the unit ever need to retreat or fall back, they can rally around the supplies as easily found by locating the banner.

Another older game report, again when my wife was playing Dark Elves.

3100 points each.

Some photos first then some notes and musings later.

Thoughts on the game.

STUPIDITY

We toned down the stupidity rules so that if you fail you don’t attack your own side.
Even so, the trolls moved so randomly that even with toned down rules they spent most of the battle aimlessly moving back and forth.
However in true WFB feels they did manage to eventually get into HTH with my Empire General and vomit stomach acid all over him.
So that was ok.

It has made us decide to not bother with Cold Ones.
I have a few models though, so rather than waste the models I may just use them as horses and pretend that’s what they are.
They won’t be as good in HTH or cause fear, but they will be cheaper and more reliable.

OGRE POWER UNIT

The Ogre mercenaries were extremely powerful, and they totally managed to hold my right flank all on their own and the Ogre Captain actually killed Samantha’s Dark Elf general.
But they were 746 points which was a sizeable chunk of my army.
But they did well and will defo be back again.

ARTILLERY

All the games we had played up to and including today we thought that the automatic hits for cannons and so on was just too powerful.
But today, once again, as always happens the cannons blew up early on.
Now if we had been using the automatic hit rule as per the book, they would have managed to do some damage before blowing up, however as we had been rolling to it they were once again pretty crappy.
I also had some organ guns, 5 barrels of hot lead death.
Again like the cannons rather than all 5 barrels auto hitting we rolled to hit.
My rolls were pretty bad and it resulted in neither of my organ guns doing much damage.
I did think that 5 barrels hitting which would be 5 hits per rank (Samantha’s Dark Elves are mostly 5 figures wide and 4 ranks deep) would result in 20 hits would be overpowering as that is 1 hit on every model in the unit.
Though they still need to roll for damage.
However given the poor performance and the points and looking at the cannons and the previous games we are going to use the official rules of cannons hitting automatically.

That may make my artillery actually effective.

TERRAIN

Terrain, the woods were interesting.
The road had broken fences and scrub along the borders.
Whilst cool looking this was a terrible faff for moving.
We have decided to go lighter on the terrain like that and that our generals prefer more plain open fields in which to battle, so less fiddly roads/linear obstacles next time.

So we have decided that even with stupidity lite house rules, we will drop Cold Ones.
We will use the official artillery rules.
We will have less terrain that makes play slower.

This all looks spectacular! I've always wondered about getting some Pendraken and Kallistra models and whether they would look good painted - they certainly do in your case!

I love your Knights of the Black Rose - great to see some Empire knights that aren't Knights Panther or Knights of the White Wolf. Also I think the way some of your Empire movement trays have stripes of alternating colours at the front looks very effective.

Cheers

Great stuff. I'm still trying to decide which is the most amazing bit - fully painted armies, great battlefield or a wife who will play Warhammer ;)

Seriously however the smaller scale stuff does look very nice and seems to lend itself well to practical large games. Being a big terrain fan I can sympathise over the practicality vs "cool" factor. I spent quite a while this morning battling with finding places to balance miniatures in my Mordheim game - even more worrying when they are not your minis and you don't want them to plummet from the tower staircase!

I meant to say previously, but I do like the way you've done the unit colours on the movement trays.

Thanks.
The trays are the result of me worrying that flocked trays will just rub off and wear down.
So that meant painting them and a painted tray is going to stick out anyway, so why try and disguise it, give the trays the colours of the uniforms of the troops in them.

I am doing now (less so back when this game was played) a Stirland heavy army and want to try an avoid the obvious Empire units.
The knights are essentially Temple Ritterbruden but just more local themed. Same with my Reiksgard which are the rules as written but I call them Aversgard:

Aversgard.png

I do like my themed accessories too.

Dice and special cheat sheets and unit cards:

I do like themed bits and bobs..

Thanks, I currently play Mordheim at the club and one guys has printed a load of very nice looking terrain, but as you note, it is not that practical, there are few flat areas, steps that models can't balance on. Recesses you can't reach.
I have just bought some MDF ruins that I will jazz up. They are quite plain in comparison but they are easy to get your models into and out of, which is one of issues with much terrain.

It is a bit like my crop field:

I needed a field that looked pretty (ish) but also allowed bases of troops to enter it.

Talking of terrain, some of my bits and bobs.

A 3d printed tavern.

This watchtower was my first try at scratchbuilding in 10mm.
I need to re-paint the wood.

though moving troops through it was tricky so:

So I took an aerial photo of the orchard, printed it and laminated it.
Now we can do this.

Laminated photo of the terrain piece from above for when occupied...

Those cheat sheets with pictures of the models are really impressive... like something one might see at a convention game (if you are lucky!).

Great to see someone engaging with the lore of the Warhammer world and making their army unique.

The terrain looks ace! - I particularly like the orchard and the the 3D printed tavern.

I rather enjoyed jazzing up the one piece of MDF terrain I have - a Windmill, even just carving the edges of the MDF on the "wooden" bits makes all the difference and breaks up the straight lines. I'd certainly highly recommend Aves Apoxie Sculpt as a great modelling putty for overlaying stone texture although not cheap it's really nice to work with.

I've seen a few tricks like yours with crop fields - I must remember it if I ever get round to buying a doormat to chop up as a wheat field - on my eventual "must make" list. The woods idea is a good one - I've generally tried to either have removable trees (magnets generally these days) or just used individual trees with some scrub to mark the edges, but whilst good for a game it doesn't appeal quite as much when actually modelling the stuff - then a lovely dense wood full of underbrush looks so much cooler. Given I actually game so little I do find myself tending toward the impractical if good looking too often! Although on my recent Cemetary and Chapel I did make sure the steps were large enough for a 20mm base at least! Actually thinking of steps that windmill model I mentioned is quite neat because the stair tread is spaced perfectly to take the edge of a typical mini base so you can "slot" your miniature onto the stairs.

I do like your 10mm scale terrain - there really is something appealing to me about this mid-point scale. I was thinking that looking at some of the 15mm scale historicals at Beachhead today. Still my 28mm lead pile is big enough without adding another (if smaller - scale at least) pile!

"Great to see someone engaging with the lore of the Warhammer world and making their army unique."

That is what is best about Oldhammer?
It was a vagueish world and it was there to be moulded, I am a big fan of WFRP foremost, WFB after that.
I just love the setting from the earlier days.

Oooh yeah that is nice, I like the mortar being a sort of lime mortar and not darker or just the same stone with a wash on it.
It is all about the details.

This is an old shot of my army, much has changed but it does showcase how much warhammer fantasy you can get in a small space.

I have started making notes in readiness for our campaign on my website:

Maps and locales and the army page has fluff on some units, very much a WIP but I do like me some lore.

As part of my upcoming Warm Ale and Mud campaign I am looking to get the buildings I need for the locale.
One of the ones I need is an inn with a walled coaching yard.

I had an inn:

oa7ji6ip276upjvc4vlwp731539tgr1e.JPG

But no yard, I also need this building as a stand alone building so I didn’t want to rebase it as a bigger model with yard attached.
So I decided to make a coaching yard and make it so it joins the main building but is a removable part.

Nothing exciting but it does the job.

Onto the next.

nice.
Oh, meant to say.. Have you looked at Spellcrow's "Argatoria" figure line? (https://www.spellcrow.com/argatoria-c-76.html)
10mm Fantasy miniatures which give some nice figures for Goblinoids, Slann, Barbarians, Ogres and bunch more. Might be something of interest for the future ^_^ prices aren't too bad either.

Thanks!

I have, though my unpainted pile just keeps growing, I have 2 complete unpainted Orcs and Chaos armies to paint. Plus loads of unpainted extra models for my 3 main armies, and I have just ordered some Skaven for one day, cos you know, need the ratties.
