Undead over-pointed in 3rd Ed?

There are times when you want to play the best darn game you can with hard hitting lists with solid troop choices for the army you are facing. Nothing wrong with that, still Oldhammer if you play it in a gentlemanly fashion and don't abuse the rules. You can then add narrative on top of what you produce.

There are other times when you may go for the pathetic aesthetic and pick your armies around a more story based theme but still play to win. Or go the whole hog and let a GM pick your unbalanced forces.

All is good.

And yes some armies have situational strength. Elves gain the ability to cause fear when fighting Orcs and Goblins but don't pay for it. Goblins gain the power of hatred against dwarves who also hate them back. Flagellants not only frenzy but hate Chaotics. All the points invested in fear causing by your monstrous chaotic host are wasted against an undead force. The fun I guess is in having loads of different armies and mixing it all up as much as possible.

So are you Oldhammer if you do all this cheesy stuff BUT one of your opponents is fielding a Dalek^H^H^H^H^H Mechanical Warrior? :)

I agree with what Warlord Paul is getting at, there are some horribly cheesy ways to play the army with. There are plenty of nasty builds and tactics available if you want to go that route, we used to do allsorts of cheesy builds and tactics as kids. One that springs to mind is putting a Necromancer on a chariot, or with a small unit of Death Riders, rush him behind enemy lines and start raising new units behind your opponents army. Some might feel it's a valid tactic but you deserve a dead arm (the punishment of choice back then) if you do that imo!

The synergy of the Undead army is very strong initially but it does fall apart very quickly once you run out of Magic Points.

I thoroughly enjoy playing scenario based fluffy games as well on pitched battles. If somebody fields a particularly cheesy force then the gloves are off and I'll happily play a harder game. Horses for courses really!

If you've got an agreement in place about how you want the game to go and feel comfortable with it then you've done all you can for your gaming buddies.

I will always maintain though, that Warhammer is not designed to stand up as a balanced test of generalship and it can never reach it's full potential that way.

Absolutely. WHFB was never designed for balanced play that's something they tried to shoehorn in later on and are still attempting to sort.

A saving amongst my group of friends is that if you want balanced in WhFB.. then play Warmahordes lol
