The sun will never set on the Slann Empire

Thank you all very much ! I agree Twisted Moon, i recently purchased more of the Tenochs , new released and painted the drummer and mage , i shall post these in the near future together with more regular Slann. Thank you BFG for your kind words. No, i dont use Contrast Paints but regular art shop Acrylics.i think i only own 2 pots of miniature paints, one being a red to combine with the orange acrylic as the acrylic is quite see through, so certain colours need this for proper covering/adequate thickness. just base coats, highlights and then washes from army painter and sometimes more highlights again to further increase contrast. Alas i painted alot of the Slann with no highlights or washes so i am going back now and repainting the units from 3 or 4 years ago. Meanwhile the Slann were busy a few months ago. I began to build the Warhammer Townscape buildings. This led me to try to create a Slann version of these. So i began to make drawings on paper of Slann basic dwellings templates. Which i then colour photo copied, glued on thin card and assembled. I felt it apropriate for the Slann to have Human Skin hanging up to dry on their homes for the various rituals and festivals that would require the wearing of such garments. I made 2 versions of the roof for variety and added curtain doorways and Slann posters for yet more variety. Here first are the templates (i chose a textured watercolour paper so that the photo copy would pick up some of the texture and further add to the illusion of stone and break up the mass produced apperance of the photo copy machine etc.)

Then i made a second template to use as a Slann Barracks Building or Jungle Sentry post. Here is the 2nd version on to which i added a watch tower made of model stage building card held together by nails then coated with cork to represent stone. This was alot of fun to build .

Here are the basic Slann Dwellings, though i was not totally happy with how they turned out, they are a very cheap and simple way to get a Slann village or town on the table ready for various scenarios.

And finally for now, though i plan to make more buildings in the future, here is the first version of the Barracks using the same photo copied Template as the Outpost with Tower. with imagery taken from an old National Geographic magazine as well as a profile Slann mage head based on one of my favorite Slann drawings - i think in Warhammer Armies book. I also added to this building the top of Scotia Grendel Ruined Aztec Temple , as i decided it was not needed on the original and wanted to leave the top flat for Coatl or enemy artlillery. Thank you very much for looking. I hope in the near future to set up all the buildings and temples on a table to make a victorious Slann Military Parade.

Wonderful stuff Andrew, every time you post I feel the need to start re-painting the rest of the Slann.

Paul / Golgfag1

Colourful and impressive as always. The lord on the palanquin looks particularly pensive is he considering who to sacrifice next?

I really like these buildings, great idea to make a Lustrian version of the Warhammer Townscape. The room for such creativity, individuality and scratch-building seems to be missing from modern Warhammer.

Cheap and easy has a place in photography. After all, quantity has a quality all its own. Not everything needs to be the center of attention, but having everything there helps to really fill the scene out. Anyway, I may have to try something similar in space. :)

Thank you Ketil Trout and Paul, as ever highly appreciated! Thank you Symphonicpoet, some Space scenery would be great from you i am sure , as i already enjoy your distant planet scenes very much. Thanks Inchmurin! Indeed, in recent weeks green Slann villagers have been vanishing in the night, there are rumours the Blue Slann have been sacrificing them. Though further rumours exist also that this is a sly and vile plot by Grenja to divide the Slann and weaken them before his next invasion northwards. Hopefuly this mystery will soon be solved. Meanwhile from the North of Lustria , the Bull Slann were repainted. Their numbers greatly reduced by decades of skirmishing with the Dark Elves. I decided to leave the original crude banner as i liked to preserve some of my early attempts at things before i knew of Foundry Aztec standards and all the contemporary companies making Slannesque style things. The unit size is increased by adding a musician and drummer and a Hero. more to follow ... at some point i may replace the Heroes shield.

And here is the musician / drummer, a recent release from David Wood´s ´Tenoch´ range (The Little Toy Soldier Company) , as Slann musicians are rare, these figures are a great addition to the units here and perfect for Slann military parades.

And then , while searching for Hobgoblin Warhounds i found the Ral Partha "Gorgonopsian War Dog" by Dennis Mize, which was released briefly by Citadel as a "Slann Warhound" in January of 1984 i believe, though may be wrong with exact dates. I really like this figure and am very glad to add it to the Slann army as one of Gurgill´s most prized beasts .

and to add to Gurgill´s hunting party, here is his original Warhound from the "Magnificent Sven" scenario, painted a few nights ago. (to the right is a modern "Mayan Masked Priest" from Gringo 40´s company, as i am now working on a tribal human force to ally with the Amazons against the Slann)

Sorry, quite alot at once, but the Slann have been busy the last weeks as rumors of Grenja´s return spread north . Currently painting also Trish Morrison Troglodytes to join the Naismith ones. The Troglodyte High Lord was much fun to paint afew more to go to complete the unit.

and lastly, a photo of a gathering in the Temple and the signing of the alliance between the Slann and the Troglodytes. Also, another modern figure, from ´Gringo 40´s` company , "Mayan Princess" sculpted by Charlie Earl , as commander of the human tribal coalition in Lustria. Thanks for looking ! I shall drink Lustrian Coffee now and then paint a human Jaguar Warrior.

As always great colours and concepts. I must try and acquire the Ral Partha /Citadel Slann warhound it looks just my style.

With all this painting :o :o :o you must be up to some fairly impressive numbers 8-) , Andrew, what you up to?

Thank you all very much for the positive comments! While painting Chaos and Orcs the Slann have also received new recruits the past months. I finally found a figure to use as standard bearer for the the wonderful Standard made by Doti from Katsina Miniatures - i was able to get a Horned Cold One by Naismith and added a Slann Jaguar Warrior hero as rider to carry the banner.
