The Lost and the Damned

Very nice, Bane! You've nailed the sickly skin tone very well without it getting gaudy and over the top. I hardly recognize any of the minis, but I don't care that they're new. Wonderful paintjobs!

Great thread! Your stuff is fab. I was transported back to ~1991 there for a minute.

I like the bloated bog corpse at the feet of the troll. I seem to say this a lot of the time around here, but how about some 40K guys next?

Great stuff and I especially like the flaming skull guy. Looks like quite a few rolls on the old chaos attributes chart.

Cheers. I can't remember all of the rolls now but nurgles rot and demonic weapon were some I believe.

I've got a few plaguemarines that I am planning to add to the warband, I want some bolters in amongst the axes and maces to capture that RoC feel.

Sounds cool. Im partial to plague marines myself. I had a plague marine army feature in WD years ago, although it wasnt as subtle and creepy as these guys by a long way. Is your stuff all Nurgle based?

Keep 'em coming regardless :)

Have you got some pics of your plaguemarines? Would love to see them, and in WD too! That used to be an ambition of mine (when I respected that publication many, many years ago).

With little hobby time these days, I had restricted myself just to nurgle, but I've already been sidetracked with some dungeon based oldhammer (see my avatar...). I'll post some photos soon.

I have yet to take any decent photos of that army. I will get around to photographing them eventually, but I dont have any decent photos as yet.

The WD page is here. Its a gamers army rather than display quality and I would approach painting it very differently now. So dont expect too much: your work on show here is of a higher quality.

Speaking of which, Im looking forward to seeing more of your stuff. Im very interested to see how you will approach different subjects. Or do you paint most things in a creepy, nightmarish sort of palette?

It should be a treat no matter what anyway :)

I managed to grab a few hours painting time this weekend, so worked on the palanquin and rider:

It looks a little washed out in the photo and the whole thing needs to be finished and some weathering added to his cloak, but I'm happy with the progress thus far. As you can see I'm going with a range of muted colours on the nurglings but I still want to add some more coloured washes to bring out the detail. I've had to use lots of ink washes on this model, to pick put all the tiny details that are also quite shallowly sculpted.

Any feedback / critiques greatly appreciated.

Really like those Plaguemarines btw!

Sorry I missed this. I've developed this palette specifically for this project, when I painted my Orc army I used a black undercoat to get deeper, darker colours and used a lot less washes. I now go for white undercoats and a multitude of washes with washing up liquid mixed in to help them spread better and highlight up with a new white paint which adds to the pastelle feel.

Shall I open another thread with my other stuff in (I've some oldbloodbowl minis I can show too) - they are quite different I think?

I have never managed to get a satisfactory finish when I paint in the manner you describe. Getting from the stage that your palanquin is at to a satisfactory level is something that I struggled with. Judging by the rest of this thread you have mastered the knack, so I will be studiously watching how your palanquin progresses.

Im not sure that there is an official forum policy, but a separate thread for BB stuff makes sense to me. There is definitely an appetite for old BB figures here :)

A long time ago I tried this style of painting on some Slaneeshi renegades. It didn't work and I never tried again.

I would never have thought to do it for nurgle and as past experience showed wouldn't have got it to work anyway.

Your stuff is just wonderful, it looks like an elegantly simple but effective look, though I know it isn't simple at all.

Hey Bane , very nice models here!
It's curious your case is very similar to mine. I'd almost sold all my old minis some years ago , and then about 2 years ago , my passion retunrs again and I started endless search through ebay too :/
Finally I can say I have 97% of all the Chaos champions , specially those sculpted by Jes Godwyn.
You can see my nurgle champions at the WIP section.

And as someone mentioned , its great the singularity of each miniature , sooo great! ;)

Bane - this is some fantastic stuff you shared here. Great conversions, great paint jobs and real atmosphere in all the minis!

Thx for sharing! /Hans

Merging the skull and banner from the herald into one image is genius!

The painting on the palanquin rider is really nice, much more subdued than you usually see with Nurgle.

Cheers all.

So as a teacher as I get this half term week to get stuff done. As well as having fun with my kids and completing some decorating to keep the wife happy, I've managed to finish the palanquin! I'll find more time this week to try and get some more painting done too (although I've already been sidetracked by the thought of a Nurgle Cavalcade.....):

Really happy with how he came out - I had to do quite a few contrasting washes to bring out the high level of detail on the palanquin (I had no idea that there is a tattered cloth on the arm rests with moon and stars on it) and likewise with all the nurglings on the base. I wish that I'd added another Nurgling at the back of the palanquin to beef it up some more, it seems strange to have a large gap there and I could have improved the pose of the front, central nurgling - he should have been hanging of the "axle" in a mischievious way.

The rust technique is a bit new for me, I've tried to use some old chestnut ink to make it slightly more subtle than I'd previously painted rust so as to not overwhelm the model which has so much going on, including the strange drips on the back...

I'm also happy with the rider (I intend to name these characters in the future and write a backstory too) he's much more pleasing to me than the original riders, which seems a bit heretical, but their sculpts are a bit weak in my opinion. Onto the next model then...

I've finally got some painting done in my hobby time instead of the usual procrastination of what to paint next, ebay scouring and general faffing around with rolling d100's on the Realm of Chaos tables. All of which I admit to enjoying greatly, but is not the most productive use of "my time".....

So here's a Chaos Sorcerer with a titilatting pink nurgling (not too sure about this, but I'll keep it for now)

What do you think?

ps. the reason I mention "titillating pink" is because on a recent visit to my parents and specifically my old bedroom, I uncovered an old biscuit tin that had some of my old citadel paints in from the monster paint set I believe. All of which are fine to paint with - amazing. I'll post some pics later of them. Alas there was no old lead, even though I completed a rudimentary search :(
