Squats: What Went Wrong?

I know I read about a load of the old Epic moulds being destroyed many years ago, it seems a real shame (there should be some kind of law against it! :) )

All of the old 'archive' moulds were skipped in about 2000 or so. However moulds have a finite life, they wear out and get thrown away anyway. However, they still have the master castings for pretty much everything in storage, which enables further moulds to be created if they so desired.

Ah that's cool, I wouldn't judge anyway to be honest for that kind of thing, regardless of where the miniature came from. Not for miniatures that have been out of production for 25 years or more, it's a wonder that it has survived at all!

Do you mind me asking Orjetax do you use that force in any games?

Love to use them in games but haven’t played since the pandemic.

I have a thread of battle reports here on the forum.

And here’s a photo of the back of a couple of the unreleased skaters, mid game

Ah that's interesting to know!

The Epic moulds are there, ready for a time when they are needed once more (dun dun dun..)

Only for the metal models really. The plastics use injection moulding tooling, and they've probably all worn out long ago and been disposed of.

So much of the Squats cool was already there in Rogue Trader, there wasn't really any need to reinvent them at all, just take what had already been defined in Rogue Trader and run with it.

It's not Ed Roth, it's Ed "Newt" Newton, but never mind. There is a really rich vein of visual imagery. Free-handing kustom kulture icons on to 28mm flying surf-boards with outboard hot-rod motors. Charlie don't surf, Apocalypse now. Kombat Kopters.

I couldn't agree more. It seems that when GW came to redo Squats they went and attempted to do "sci-fi classic fantasy nordic dwarves" - all axes and horned helms and other fantasy tropes, and hence whilst the models are perfectly nice, the concept is not that inspiring (well I didn't feel it was and I guess the GW studio didn't either). I think they would have been better as Zhu says running (or biking) with what they had and seeing where it went.

It's not that they weren't inspiring. They just immediately gave the concept to Space Wolves.

It was just like, wow crazy Squats are cool, let's use that theme for Orks!
Wow, space Viking Squats! Let's use that theme for Space Wolves!
Oh no, why can't we create a distinct theme to make Squats work?

Still, I liked the original Squats the most. The same for the original Orks.

Watching a video on Ed Roth now. Wow, the scale of betrayal of Squats is unimaginable. They even gave away kustom kulture to Orks when it was initially the Squat thing.
