Slowly painted greenskins

Nicely done they look great. I don't think my 2nd edition Orc Army is having boar riders. Those early all metal ones, which would fit with my early C series orcs the best, are a bit to pricey on the 2nd hand market. Which only makes your unit doubly impressive.

Cheers for nice comments always means a lot.

So not had much time for painting and what free time I have had I used to make up some more shields for the army (ran out of original shields a while ago so been making my own from resin). Anyway while I was filling the hole in the middle of shields I decided to try my hand at an orc shield face just for fun really. My green stuff skills are very limited mainly gap filling ! So make up a few few just for fun and spent an hour today painting them up. Have to admit I was surprised with how they turned out and I'm now seriously thinking about making some more and making resin copies and using them for the army. So here's a couple of pictures

My very first attempts

Painted up

The thing I quickly learned was for me it was a lot easier to first build up the basic shape and let that harden and then work on the actual features. Still need to work on the teeth look more like sausages LOL

Having attempted to make shield designs/faces myself I can appreciate how well these look 8-) and I like sausages.

Brilliant! Making replacement parts is a classic way to stretch your greenstuff skills. I think the next step is making a larger scale miniature. (Since the smaller ones are supposed to be harder.) Keep it up!

Thanks for comments .

So spent the afternoon making more shields. I have to admit I find it very relaxing doing these and feel that with each version I learn a little bit more about the process. Still struggle with teeth and the tongue didn't work as I wanted and need to work on the noses but definitely seeing improvements in my skill level. At some point I will try to make some resin casts just to see if I can and again just for the fun of it.

Considering teeth, might help you if you wait green stuff snake to dry then cut it to some length and then cut it again top to bottom, and then that piece glue to the face, or something similar with prearranged spot for tooth?

My try out of face shield ended in the bin, so I really don't know what I'm on about hehe

These are great, I'm a sucker for a good face shield. Are you using a mix of sculpting tools? Maybe you just need a different tool to help with the teeth - although looking at your photos they look pretty good to me!

Thanks for kind words.

Finished off a nice selection and will see what happens when i try to make some resin copies. Have to say the 2 larger shields were so much easier to sculpt and have come out looking the best of them .

Another non model update (sorry).

Just simply a photo to show what in theory the completed army will eventually comprise of. I do have all the models for this just have to paint them all and resist adding to it LOL

So, it's been a while since I posted anything and sadly not done much painting in that time. We sadly lost our dog to Leukaemia, and it really hit me hard he was only 5 and came on very suddenly and was just a horrible time and painting was the last thing on my mind. It's taken a long time to get the urge but with the help of a new puppy, I've finally started painting again. Started with small steps and just completed the unit of boar riders I started some months ago. Absolutely love the models and definitely been a real joy to paint. Decided against the usual face shields as to be honest there a real pain to paint ! So gone for much simpler designs. So here we go...

So what's next ??? Another unit of boars probably

Here's my latest addition to my army the first of 2 skull crushers. I find war machines a nice distraction due to the simple wood/metal nature of the painting. Have to say I think these may be some of the worst gobbo's Kev Adams ever made and I really disliked painting them so didn't really feel motivated to spend much time on them.

Also thought I would post pictures of everything I've completed so far

I'm slowly getting there and would say I'm probably about 30% through my greenskin collection (unless I buy more LOL)

it's true they're not his usual characterful, dynamic, figures. hadn't actually realised they were kev adams.

First off another skull crusher

Next some trolls
orc163.jpg

Then a shot of everything I've painted up to then
orc164.jpg

Then I went for some savage orcs, not something I'd ever really looked at as they are mainly Perry twin sculpts but have to say they are really nice models and a pleasure to paint.

And finally I painted up a standard bearer and leader. Standard bearer was converted by removing spear tip and adding a greenstuff pole and banner. To add to the savage orc feel I added some skulls.

So there you go all up to date.
